Contrary to the news that only three soldiers died a fortnight ago after they drowned in Bayelsa State, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) has claimed that no fewer than 50 troops actually lost their lives, Tribune News online reports.

NDA, which made this known on its Twitter handle, @Niger Delta Avengers, on Tuesday, said the Chief of Army Staff, deployed personnel on a suicide mission because they lacked “amphibian” training to navigate in the creeks.

The group said that but for the swift help of local fishermen, the death rate would have reached 100.

It accused the COAS of selling a dummy to President Muhammadu Buhari that its members were killing soldiers.

“The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Tukur Burutai, in his statement, said NDA killed Nigerian soldiers. It is a big lie!

“The Chief of Army Staff deployed personnel without amphibian training to the creeks that led to the death of about 50 soldiers.

“If not for the help of local fishermen, the death rate should have been up to 100.

“He (COAS) has been lying to his Commander in Chief that NDA are killing soldiers.

“This is our stand: we have not killed soldiers. If we do, we will claim responsibility because we take proud and responsibilities in all we are doing. That is our code.

“God bless the Niger Delta Republic,” the NDA’s tweet read.

It will be recalled that about three soldiers attached to the Joint Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta, allegedly perished in two detached boat tragedies in Bayelsa and Delta states.

This is what happens when you fetch troops that are local champions on land and try to use them on water.

Apparently, this claim by NDA is likely to be true. We all know that a sizable number of our soldiers are not well trained in demanding terrain like the creeks, and sheer skipping of training due to man-know-man. Is this how NA will win this war, by trial and error? Wish them good luck.

Imagine carrying hausa-fulani soldiers who has never seen a river in their life to go and fight on water!!! smh at the cluelessness of this regime. To think it was the same poor villagers they are persecuting in the search for tompolo that saved lots of them

Everyone has learned the art of war on the media! It is now very difficult to even calmly accept 'official' accounts and statements as fact. However, the Nigerian govt and her agencies are notorious for downplaying the numbers of human casualties especially of their personnel or needlessly butchered civilians who should have been secured under their watch. In this case, I'm more inclined to believe the NDA though with a pinch of salt.

Useless show of force by the Nigerian government will not resolve the burning issues in this country.

This is becoming scary. Buhari should handle this delicate situation skillfully. We will all suffer it. Everything is not force.
Buhari appears like someone on a revenge mission. The first week he became president, he bombed the creeks in Niger Delta. Meanwhile, he had not lifted a finger against bokoharam. I think people are giving him wrong advice. He should be seen as a friend to every person.
This battle can be avoided. Try negotiating with these guys instead of beating your chest. They are not like bokoharam.

Was still typing. The warfare is not in doubt as to its reality but the war on the media is more in respect of the play on numbers. Read the full post.

I knew the Nigerian army where lying. They can't match those militants power for power or strength for strength. Their drills are far tougher than that of the Nigerian army. I'm currently at Ogunu in Warri and I can tell you no level for the military.

Really undecided, the same thing they said back then about asari dokubo and his team during obasanjo tenure, the same thing was said about bokoharam during GeJ tenure. What can we say abt them now. undecided

There is no terror group our soldiers cant match, its just a matter of time, intelligence and motivation.

At this rate Nigerian soldiers are dying We'd soon be left to defend ourselves with sticks and stones. The army has always been a joke. I doubt if this army can defend us against external aggression from even a small African state.

You know the funny thing with the figures often they are round numbers. Why is that so? Why 50 and why 100? Why not maybe 47, Abi 54?

As for me it simply says one thing. Someone Just lump something since he can't ascertain and makes it his desired numbers by mere sight or false assumptions.Rather than real figures or head count. cheesy cheesy

Again provide picture or it never happened. Also 50 bodies no be small number that you can hide like 3 bodies. Let the propaganda continue. Until the right tactics is finalized, then some people will realize what it feels like to be an enemy of state. undecided undecided

Military solution will never bring peace to the niger delta region....
Only "dialogue and negiotiation"

Using force will never bring solution to this. Buhari should know better. This is not a case of terrosim but pure AGITATION.....

don't be cajoled by the Avengers they are just trying to appeal to our emotions. what is our business if the NA are dying. It is the duty of NA to defend the sovereignty of the country because it resides in them. NDA your days are numbered on earth I know you guys are on nairaland but I bet you guys will not see the end of this movie.

Tell a lie and you will need more lies daily to cover it up despite that, the truth will surely be revealed eventually. 5 or 50 soldiers, all I know is that those that died have their own families and you may need to tell more lies to each of them.
