Amosun ; No To Grazing Routes In Ogun State... by modath(f): 7:06pm On Jun 17, 2016
Samuel Awoyinfa
Abeokuta

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has ‎said he is not in support of the proposed creation of grazing zones across the country by the Federal Government.

He said this on Friday at his Oke Mosan office, Abeokuta, while receiving the technical committee on herdsmen/farmers clashes set up by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin.

Amosun argued that grazing zones could not solve the frequent clashes between herdsmen and farmers, adding that he would rather support the establishment of cattle ranches, by cattle herders as a lasting solution to the conflict.

He described the formation of the technical committee as timely and a step in the right direction.

He said, “People have suggested a number of solutions. But, for me, I would not support creation of grazing zones. They (cattle herders) should take it as a business, probably building ranches‎ privately. We should not try to solve a problem by creating another one.”

The governor urged Nigerians to embrace peace, stating that nothing could be solved with violence.

Amosun advised security agencies to investigate the nationality of the killer herdsmen, if indeed they were from neighbouring countries as being alleged in some quarters.

The head of the technical committee, Major-General Edward Nze, said the panel was set up by the Chief of Defence Staff at the instance of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said the incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the country was becoming a threat to national security‎.

As part of measures to tackle the menace, Nze ‎said “Operation Accord” would be inaugurated by the military authorities.

Ahead of the operation, he explained that the technical committee had also visited some affected states, including Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Zamfara, Ondo, Ekiti and Oyo.

While in Ogun, Nze said, the delegation would meet with relevant stakeholders towards finding lasting solutions to the herdsmen and farmers clashes, which reared its ugly head occasionally in some Yewa area of the state.

Very good governor Amosun.

Cattle rearing is a business like poultry and pigry. As poultry farmers and pigry operators build homes for their animals, so should cattle rearers buy land and build ranches for their cattle business.

I wonder o. Business should be treated as business.

The herdsmen are wrecking the lives of farmers with their cattle trampling on precious crops these farmers have invested money and time on. This is apart from the clashes that lead to loss of lives.

Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo and Ekiti have all opposed the grazing bill. Osun state is still silent about the whole issue. We dont know what Aregneshola's position is now. I fear that Osun might be the black sheep of the family

Thank God Amosun didn't mince words about his people's stance on the grazing issue..I find the grazing debate totally irksome. Cattle herders should set up ranches for their animal feed and stop hoping on the federal government to set the nation on a war path by annexing lands in all states as grazing zones.

This is why I love my governor, he can be friends with you and still separate it from his people's interests. Unlike some people who said they are no slaves yet falling over themselves to give their land for grazing before they are even asked.

This is how you know a real man and a true leader, he's a close friend with Buhari but his people's interest is supreme.

This is a very insensitive statement which smacks of ignorance. It completely ignores the nomadic way of life of the herdsmen. To truly solve the problem at hand one must consider all of its components and apply ingenious solutions.

Thinking outside of the box coupled with wisdom is essential here.

Then u must also consider the way of life of those who aren't nomads! The South has a culture of farming and fishing and will not be bullied into accommodating strange customs of nomads. If they must roam, the north alone is big enough. When they choose to ply their trade down south, they must work within a specific area known as a ranch. What is more insensitive than an attempt by d FG to take away lands of Southerners for dangerous persons to operate within?

It is unheard of in any decent n civilised society to see cattle being herded across busy highways and through farmlands. If they feel the urge for an evening walk or they are beset by the urge to roam, they should secure their animals in their pens n keep all dangerous weapons safely locked up in those ranches. Once that is done they are free to traipse d length n breadth of Nigeria without trespassing! If that trekking fancy is only fuelled by herds of cattle alongside then that must be confined only to their native states.

What are these ingenious and innovative solutions u might propose?

Let Buhari and his brothers carry their expansionism agenda to sambisa forest , after all there's enough land there.

So, in the exercise of their right to waka about, these nomads are "free" to infringe on other people's rights to peace & security of lives, livelihood & properties in their ancestral land?! You try! sad

Pray tell how to think out of the box & apply these "ingenious solutions"?

Everyone knows cattle herders are itinerant men and that won't change soon. What is wrong with the proposed grazing zone is the involvement of the federal government in what should be a private business. Herders can team up with farmers in their host communities to set up feeding fields for their cows. This means local farmers will own ranches where herders can feed their cattle and pay for such service. The farmers can even plant fruits and other crops on the land as cattle dung is known to aid plant growth.

Don't mind that guy, he thinks they can bully other Nigerians with their old ways. The more we practice democracy, the more it would be clear to them that they cannot always have it their way like under the military that is largely under their control which they were using to create uneccessary advsntages to themselves.

Yeah buddy. Governor Amosu remains ever the diplomat and the statesman, whose cloaks his righteous rage in polite, carefully selected words that squarely address the crime of SABOTAGING AND DESTROYING agriculture all across Nigeria, that is currently being perpetrated by Boko Haram terrorist squads masquerading as cattle herders.

For those who still require a translation of the terse words spoken by the calm and collected governor, let me help you out with a more direct translation.

To you Boko Haram cattle terrorists and farmland wreckers, what Governor Amosu really means to say, in plain language, is as follows :

"Take your crop destroying cattle, along with your rifle-wielding, woman defiling terrorist "herders", and stuff them up your crusty Boko Haram anus, for all we care. In other words, you marauding kidnappers, murderers and crop thieves, kindly go phuck yourselves in YOUR farmland, conveniently located for you in the barren desert wastes of northern Nigeria. Thank you very much for your cooperation, and God bless Nigeria."

The erudite governor would not be so reckless as to speak frankly and bluntly on the delicate subject of the Boko Herder plague and pestilence in a public arena, but I bet you if he ever reads my translation of his statement here, he will get a quiet laugh, and nod his head in approval of every word I wrote above, for sure and without a doubt.

You're the one being very insensitive about this matter and I must add, selfish. Should it be about the Fulani herdsmen alone? Don't the farmers and farming communities have rights too? Should they lose their lives and livelihood simply because some dumb animals wish to feed?

Is the cattle rearer meant to remain stuck in the medieval way of doing things? What if I tell you my own ancestors never had poultry houses but free range hens and their chick foraging everywhere for food? What about goat herders or pigries? Didn't the average Texan also used to travelling with his cattle before modernity caught up with him? We must innovate, evolve or die.

The Fulani heardsman shouldn't expect to have his way every time. I expect u to know that. What is worse is that the herdsmen leave their homes hundreds of miles away in search of food for his cattle and its the farmer in Benue, Enugu or Ekiti that has to lose his life so animals can eat. Shouldn't that necessitate reappraisal of the whole issue?
