Chapter 1

Enya’s Only Time was playing at a low volume as she entered the house. A little girl in a pink gown looking like a Disney princess ran down the stairs and headed towards the back of the house. Judith walked quickly towards the direction the girl had disappeared to. She was met with a kitchen, and a door moving back and forth like someone had just slammed it. They were about half a dozen aluminous pots with sweet smelling aromas coming out of them on the kitchen cabinet. Judith was tempted to check what was underneath the shiny covers, but more than that, she was interested in knowing where the little girl had run off to. She gently opened the net-door and her eyes searched the faces of the people in the garden. They were all dressed in black and they stared at her as she stepped out of the house. She looked at herself and noticed she also had a black dress on. She fiddled with the elastic band on the mid-section of her gown as she moved towards where everyone was clustered. The shoes she had on were ruby red and they sparkled as she looked down at them.

The little girl ran pass her again, this time, chased by a boy about her age, and Judith almost tripped as she tried to get out of their way. She regained balance and kept walking. Her focus was on the wooden elevation that people were lingering around.

She was directly in front of the thing now, and she noticed it was actually a coffin. She looked down at the open casket, and saw Tony lying inside, dressed in a black tuxedo, with his hands by his side. A tear trickled down her cheek, and she ran her hands through the length of the coffin as she leaned on it. She turned around for a split second and saw someone in the crowd that made her heart skip a beat. She looked back again, and he was no longer there. Her eyes searched all around the garden, but he was nowhere in sight. Then she looked down at Tony again, and just as she was about to walk away from the coffin and greet people properly, his eyes popped open. She stepped back in shock, tripped, and fell.
She kept falling when she had expected to hit the ground. She felt like Alice, in Wonderland, falling down the rabbit hole. She got comfortable with the fall after a while, and was looking at the patterns on the walls around her. Just then, she suddenly hit the ground, and woke up in cold sweats on her room bed.
………………..

Sweat trickled down her face in the dark room. She reached for her phone from under the pillow to check the time. It was 4:30 am. The last thing she remembered was watching an episode of Keeping up With the Kardasians rerun on E Chanel around 8 pm. She moaned as she rubbed the back of her neck and got off the bed. She wobbled here and there and fell back on the bed. She had stepped on a mug and had lost balance. She lay in bed for a few more seconds, thinking of how her leg would have been a bloody red right now if she had had her cocktail in a glass cup instead of the mug she used. She sighed before rolling over to the other side and lazily walking out of the room. She switched on the camera lights of her phone and headed down the stairs. She had taken alcohol to make her sleep because Tony was going to be discharged from the hospital today, and she had been too nervous to sleep. Instead of helping her have a good night sleep, the liquor made her have nightmares. Now she was sure she wouldn’t get any sleep again till 6 am when she planned to leave the house.
Naturally, she would have called her cook, Bassey to help turn on the Generator set, but he had just gotten a new wife, and she had heard them in action a few times in the last couple of days, and didn’t want to disturb their honeymoon. His former wife had left for one of the land sellers in the area. It still shocked Judith that a woman who went to labor twice would run off with another man, leaving her kids with her husband, just because of the promise of a better life.
She turned the key and the generator shook vigorously for a few seconds, and then balanced out, vibrating at an almost unnoticeable frequency. A barking dog could be heard from the distance. “Ziggy.” Judith said out loud as she shook her head and headed back into the house.

Chapter 2

Tony had been trying to leave of the hospital for weeks now, but the doctors felt he would be better recouping some place he couldn’t be disturbed. It happened that he had been shot by a small caliber revolver, and the bullet didn’t penetrate, but actually just grazed the side of his stomach, with no severe damages. “He probably collapsed from the shock of being shot, and not from the gunshot itself.” Judith remembered the grey-haired doctor saying the day after the shooting.

As she drove out of her house at 6 in the morning, her mind went back to the day of the shooting. The incidence had left her traumatized, and she never spent too much time recollecting what had gone on that day. But it had been 6 weeks, and she was mentally and psychologically stronger now. She remembered people running off instead of trying to get help as she cried out as she tried to pull Tony’s lifeless body off the pavement to her car. Some people even took pictures with their phones from afar. For minutes, she struggled with the body till a white Toyota Corolla drove pass her, and made a u-turn to get on the side of the road she was on.

When the three teenage boys came out of the car and rushed towards her, she screamed out, thinking they had come to finish him off. When they got closer and she saw the concerned look on their faces. One of them pulled her away from Tony, and other two quickly lifted Tony off the ground by his arms and legs and rushed him towards their car.

The ride to the hospital was the longest 5 minutes of her life. She held Tony’s body in her arms in the backseat as his blood soaked her jeans. Judith was too scared to look at Tony’s eyes, but her right hand was underneath his shirt with her palm on his chest. His steady heartbeat reassured her through the journey. She let out a sigh of relief when she finally saw the familiar sign of a snake wrapped around a staff.

………………..

Although she had come here a lot in the last couple of weeks, she still felt repulsed by the smell of disinfectant that filled the air as she stepped into the building. It brought back bad memories from her past that she had long buried by getting too busy to stop and remember them. As she walked past the waiting area to get to the staircase, at the corner of her eyes, she could see how people’s faces lit up; faces that were, seconds ago, dull. It was one of the magical feelings she loved about her line of profession. The sacrifices she made on her way to success always seemed worth it when she had experiences like this. She smiled as she ascended the stairs.

Tony’s room had changed a few times over the weeks, and she sometimes found herself going to the very first room he had been taken to after leaving the operating theater. She was on her way there again, till she remembered and turned around. She took one more flight of stairs, and walked over to the first room on the left hand side of the corridor. She stood in front of the door, and tucked in her denim top properly into the black leather skirt she had on. She had her eyes closed for a few seconds as if saying a silent prayer, and then she opened the door.

Chapter 3

Tony was on the phone when she walked into the room. She greeted his room-mate with a smile and a nod before walking over to sit beside Tony on the bed. A sky blue duffel bag with a Nike swoosh on it separated them. She had her hand on the bag as she looked up at him. She noticed he had just gotten a fresh haircut. It surprised her, as she thought he was not allowed to leave the hospital building. ‘This is not jail, Judith.’ She thought to herself. Her eyes went from his neatly caved sideburns to his shoulders, and then to his chest. It shocked her that he had actually become buff from his 6 weeks stay at the hospital. Even though she had visited him at least twice a week in his time here, it was just today she had really noticed his muscle gain. He looked sideways at her and winked before continuing with his conversation. He had on a white long sleeve shirt that had straps at the shoulders, and the sleeves were rolled up to just beneath his elbows. The top fit his new body perfectly.

Tony said something to the person on the other line about his girlfriend picking him up and Judith instantly felt butterflies in her stomach. She looked away shyly, and her eyes fell on Tony’s roommate. Apparently, he had been staring at her all the while. “How are you doing?” Judith said with a smile.
“I’m fine.” He said and nodded a couple of times. The expressionless look in his face and his full grown beard scared her and she slowly looked away from him. Judith always got really bold when she switched to her alter ego, but she had never really been too good with one on one conversation with strangers. She swiped the screen of her phone aimlessly, but her mind was racing again. She thought of how, even though she and Tony had shared a passionate kiss minutes before he was shot, it seemed like he couldn’t remember that. It was like they were back at square-one, and she wasn’t sure if he was still playing along with her plan or if he was just being himself.

When he ended the call, he turned to face her with a smile on his face as he said, “Thanks.” She smiled back, and she thought for a second that he wanted to lean in for a kiss, but the bag was in the way. Judith felt like flinging it out the window. After a few seconds of awkwardness, he turned over to his roommate. “Ahmed. I leave you in peace.” He said and got off the bed with his hand outstretched and his head slightly bowed.
The guy shook his hand with a lot of vigor and chuckled, then his face got serious as he said, “don’t forget what we spoke about.”
“Most definitely.” Tony said as he swung the duffel bag around his shoulder. “I have your number. I’ll contact you in due time.” Tony tapped his roommate on the shoulder twice and headed out the room. Judith was already at the door and she waved at the guy before opening the door and walking out.
“Do you have to sign out or something?” She asked Tony as he joined her out on the corridor.
“Oh, I already did that about an hour ago.” He said and grabbed her hand as they walked down the stairwell.

………………..

Judith turned on the air-conditioning in the car, and then quickly switched it off. “Umm! Are you cool with A/C?” She asked with a little concern in her eyes.
“Yea… Why do you ask?” He turned to her with a puzzled look on his face.
“Well, I read somewhere that gunshot wounds hurt when it rains, and in cold weather.”
“Hmm! I don’t know about that. I used A/C most times at the hospital.” He said as he strapped on the seatbelt. “By the way, the bullet grazed my side, it didn’t enter my body.”
“True…that’s true. Cool then.” She said and turned on the SUV’s air conditioner before driving off. She slipped in a CD after a couple of minutes of silence.
“Is that Rihanna?” Tony asked when a female voice came on.
“Nope! It’s Sia.”
“Oh! Are you for real? She sounds a lot like Rihanna.”
“Well, that may be because she has written a couple of songs for Rihanna in the past.”
“ Really?”
“Yea, you know how they do with the reference tracks.” She said and Tony looked at her, lost. She took a right turn to join the highway before she continued. “It’s more than just ghostwriting. The way they do it, the writer actual sings the whole song and the big star just like gets in the boot and sings along to the reference track.”
“Hmm! How come you know so much about this?”
She looked into space for a while before saying, “Actually, a record label once approached me with such a deal.”
“And?”
“It was quite tempting. About $300,000 advance at the time. But I just couldn’t do it.”
“I feel you.”
“Speaking of which, a lot of people have approached me concerning you.” She said with a smile.
“Really.” Tony said as he sat up in his seat, looking really excited.
“Yep! You do know your book; Elohor’s Perfect Imperfections is doing really great.”
“Yea, and I can’t thank you and Ayo enough for that.”
“Well, that has opened doors to many other things.” She said and took a quick glance at him.
“Like…”
“Like paid interviews, book deals, etc. You know…stuff like that.”
“Hmm!”
“They are all cool, and would definitely bring you money, but that’s not what got me excited.”
“What got you excited?” Tony asked, as he turned to face her.
“Well, I think I should save that for when we get home.”

Chapter 4

The music had stopped playing now and the car was awfully quiet for a while before Tony broke the silence, “Umm! Your house is quite far.” He said as he shifted in his seat.
Judith laughed before saying, “Come on! We haven’t been driving for more than what…10 minutes or so since we left the filling station.”
“Hmm! I guess it just feels long because we are on the express road.”
“Yea, it always feels that way to most people.”
“So…why this place?”
“Well, it was either here or Ajah, and I can’t stand how that place gets when it rains.”
“Hmm!”
“Yea, and I love nature.”
Tony squinted for a while before saying, “That night…the night Ayo and I met you at the hotel, did you drive all the way out here afterwards?”
“No. I stayed at my flat in Ikoyi.”
“Okay. That makes a lot of sense now.”
“I come here weekends; or when I just need a break from the whole craze of Lagos.” She said and stopped to press some buttons on the steering before continuing. “Lagos has become one freaking large urban conurbation with unbearable traffic.”
“True.”
A loud beat boomed out of the car speakers and it made Tony jump on his seat. She chuckled before holding her thumb down on a button on the left side of the steering wheel till the sound was at a bearable level. Afterwards, she slowed down and got off the highway unto a dirt-road to the right. They drove for about five minutes before taking another right turn. Although also a dirt-road, it was smoother than the one they were on before, and the SUV gained momentum. She honked her horn twice and Tony looked puzzled as he said, “Are they some imaginary people on the road that I can’t see?”
She chuckled before saying, “My guards can actually hear the horn from here.” The car slowed down in front of a tall black gate that was flanked on both sides by white walls that matched the gate in height. The gate opened slowly, and they drove in. She honked her horn again and waved at the tall and skinny teenager that smiled at her from the gate. He had on a white cotton fabric gown that went down to his knees, with three quarter pants of the same material. On his head was a hat that reminded Tony of Raiden, one of the characters from the Mortal Kombat video game. Tony took his eyes off the guy, and in view, about 500 meters away was a white painted mansion, with a water fountain in front of it. One either side of the long driveway to the house was large expanse of land, with neatly trimmed carpet grass. His eyes went from the fountain to the north-west angle of the property where about half a dozen people were gathered outside a small shed. “Who are those people?” Tony asked.
“I have a small poultry farm at the back there.” She said and squinted before adding, “Two of those guys work at the pen, I…I am not sure who the remaining three are.”
They were at the end of the driveway now, and she slowed down as she took the curve in the road that went round the water fountain, and then parked right in front of the house door. Tiny drops of water carried by the wind hit his face continually as he got out of the car. It felt good and Tony stood in front of the fountain, admiring the mechanism of how water gushed out of the cone-shaped rocks at such high intensity. Judith walked over to his side. “I actually started building this place with a resort in mind, but I fell in love with it along the way and turned it to my home.” She said with a smile. Without saying anything more, she held his hand in hers and led him towards the house. The brick-red color of the interlocking tiles of the ground they walked on matched the color of the three-door garage on the right side of the entrance. They took three steps up to the main door, and Judith took a deep breath before opening the door. He was about to ask her why the door wasn’t locked when he heard a thunderous, “Surprise!”

Chapter 5

People were having chit-chats here and there, moving around the living room randomly as slow music played in the background. It seemed pretty odd for a Nigerian party setting where Wizkid’s music would naturally be playing at a loud volume, with people dancing at every corner. But this wasn’t just any party; it was a welcome home party thrown for a recluse, organized by another socially awkward person.

Tony had greeted everyone at least twice, and was still in awe at how Judith had pulled it off. He didn’t have a large network of friends, but his family was a large one, and almost all the ones in Lagos were here. He did see some faces he had never seen before, but for the most part, majority of the people in Judith’s living room right now were people he actually knew on first name basis. Even his cousin, Stanley who he hadn’t seen since his Dad died was here.

When he was free, he moved to the table at the extreme left corner of the parlor and dropped a few ice cubes into his glass cup. He filled up the cup from a freshly opened bottle of Jack Daniel whiskey till the ice cubes bubbled at the top. His eyes wondered around the place, and it was clear that at this point people were more interested in Judith and her humongous house than any story he had to tell them about surviving a gunshot.

Judith and her charming smile, the various paintings of African village setting at every corner, fine polished ebony dining table, Siberian Tiger hide on the floor at the center of the room , shiny marble floor, 60 inch Plasma TV hanging on the wall, all these and other aesthetics in the living room held people’s attention.

He dropped one more cube into his drink before wondering off. He found himself in the kitchen, and for some reason he wondered why his mom wasn’t here. He knew she didn’t like leaving the house, but he was sure she would have at least made an effort for an occasion like this. Unless she was still angry at the Ndulue’s for what happened in 1995.
“Hey!” Someone said behind him and left him startled. He turned around and cursed under his breath when he saw it was his friend. Ayo put his arm around his shoulder and led him out the back door.
“Wow!” Tony exclaimed when he saw all the cars at the back of the house. And much more than that, he was awed by the beautifully landscaped greenery in front of him.
“Yea, wow! It wasn’t easy getting all your people down here.” Ayo said and patted his friend on the shoulder. “Savor the moment my friend. Savor the moment.” He added and was about walking back into the house when Tony held his hand.
“I don’t know how to say this…” Tony was saying and paused to take a sip from his cup before continuing. “I know you explained before, but, are you sure…this place is massive, men!”
“Dude, I don’t get you.” Ayo said and scratched his forehead. He had a grey suit on with no tie, and he looked really tired.
“How can she afford this?” Tony said as he motioned to the house.
Ayo sighed and put his hand on Tony’s shoulder as he led his friend off the back porch of the house onto the green grass. “I’m her manager, which means I get 10% from the deals I get her, right?” He said and paused for a minute like he was doing some mental calculations. “I have made 65 million Naira this year alone, and we are in September.”
“Wow! Damn dude! I didn’t know you were caked up like that.” Tony said and shook his friend three times, back to back. “You are supposed to be on some Rolls Royce shit right now.”
“Yea, right; A Phantom is about what…150 million?”
“Oops!”
Ayo looked ahead as he said, “The thing I have noticed in life is; a Million Naira is huge to you until you actually earn it.” He took a sip from his cup before adding, “Besides, Bukkie’s dad is really sick and I have been spending a lot on his treatment in India.”
“Hmm!”
“Yea…as Biggie said, more money more problems.”
“But…” Tony was saying till someone hit him from behind.
“What are you guys up to?” Judith said, and slipped her hand around Tony’s waist from behind.
“We were actually talking about…” Ayo was saying and paused to look at Tony with a smile before adding, “We were talking about the weather.”
“Yea, right.” Judith said and laughed. Just then Ayo’s phone rang and he excused himself. There was silence for a few seconds before Judith broke it. “Umm! I want to show you something.” She said and pulled Tony along. He slowed her down a bit to stop the content of his cup from spilling.
“Is it about the deal?” Tony asked.
“What? Oh, no.” She said and turned around briefly with a smile as she walked briskly in front of him. “I just want to show you my new pet.”
“Your new pet?” Tony asked.
“Yes. My new pet; his name is Ziggy.”
They walked through the plain field for about a minute till they got to a cream colored bungalow. Just by the side of the house was a dog cage. They moved closer to the cage and inside was a brown colored dog, wagging its tail.
“Nice. This is a Great Dane, right?” Tony said and bent to get a closer look at the dog.
“Yea, I read one of your Facebook posts where you said you like the dog.”
“Like? I love the dog.” He said as he reached into the cage to rub the dog’s head.
Judith bent down beside him. “I got it the week after…the week after you were shot.”
Tony looked lost for a while and then a smile took over his face again. “So, it’s how old?” He asked.
“Umm! It was 3 and half months when I got it. So, it should be about 5months now.”
After a while, Tony got up and looked back at the house. “Hey Judith, I’m really curious to know the deal you spoke about earlier.”
“Oh! Yea, it’s a big deal, with big bucks.” She said and got up to face him. “But you might have to do a little acting on camera…Or maybe not.” Judith added, searching Tony’s eyes.
“Acting?”
“Yea, a reality TV show; Tony and Judith.”

“Ziggy.” Judith said out loud as she shook her head and headed back into the house.
to cut the long quote short.. it's interesting

Help is something that should be given to every man and woman, it should be unconditional irrespective of whom the help is targeted at since help should naturally come out of love for mankind. Denilson Igwe helps somebody expecting something else in return but his bubbles were busted in ways that he never even knew the first thing he got in return was not what he expected.

This is one you can not afford to have alone, show some love and share with others as i know you cannot contain your joy and laughter after seeing this video.
