What now happens to all the efforts to stimulate local production of rice??

Nigeria and policy somersaults eh.

Well, some short term advantage will accrue from this:
-cheaper rice

Long term disadvantages
-pressures on naira will continue as people continue sourcing for scarce foreign exchange for rice imports.
-if the local production is not well protected and nourished, this new directive can kill off the production.
You forget the exchange rate factor. Rice definitely can't be as cheap as when $ was 197

I'm vindicated. I said it from day one that the ban rice importation is foolishness and one day it must be reversed. It is just unfortune that many innocent masses died of hunger because of this foolish by some few fools and now that the fools are regaining their lost senses, these innocent masses have already gone. Too late to cry when the head is cut off!

Flip flopping does not look good on the leadership, it erodes the people's confidence in your competence and that is NOT a good thing
Think it out and test the secenarios before you even dream of bringing it to life by implementing it

These farmers farmed rice, fought marauding herdsmen and bought fertilizer through their nose.
Now as they preparing for rice harvest, you now lift ban on rice importation.

The fact that your president and his team had to learn from experience in what should have been a no-brainer shows how inept they all are.
If simple policies like this can be bungled like an amateur, I wonder with which brain cells and professional expertise your govt is going to use in formulating very complex and specialized policies needed to solve Nigeria's hydra-headed fundamental issues.

Please i stand to be corrected, i keep hearing of stimulation and protection of local productions, but let me ask all dis time they bound the importation of rice through the border, where are the local producers doing. I still have not seen any locally made rice flood the market, thats because this rice are not available and accessible, the big question is will take for ever for the local rice to be produce. So please lets stop all dis deceit the masses are the one suffering for all dis.

It is the ban that is working against rice production. Since rice is then smuggled without paying any duty. Now, they have to pay 70% (10% import and 60% levy) making it more expensive and giving local rice producers an advantage

A combination of increased dollar rate and the import levy should increase the price of foreign rice and make local production attractive. If the borders aren't opened the local farmer will increase price astronomically and above the foreign alternative. For me, the timing of the move is flawless.

why are people shouting? the price of rice has skyrocketed obviously and u expect the ban on importation of rice to still be in place? by the way how many companies are locally processing rice? the removal of the ban is a good move. furthermore when local production starts, d locally produced rice will be cheaper than the imported one. this will give room for the growth of local production of rice.

You're the dull@rd here Mr Man. Buhari didn't tighten security at the borders because imported rice were harmful for consumption. What they said was that, as a result of the ban of rice, importers were importing rice with coffins and mixing rice with other harmful substances so they could evade arrest at the border.

Try and use your brain next time. You don't just rush to term the President a dull@rd at any given opportunity.
so you don't still believe, your president is a dullard?

This is exactly what i have in mind. This policy changes makes people not to take the govt serious. You have encouraged people to get back to the farm and they are going back and pronto you are discouraging them again. If its cheaper to buy imported rice then why do I need to start some sort of subsistence or large scale farming? I passed through the land border to Ghana recently and it was quite funny on the land borders. Just settle and go runzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

I am still a Nigerian and I love Nigeria. Opportunities are here. God open our eyes...........
