Differences between a Modem Vs Phone's HotSpot by Tonymic4life(m): 8:39pm On Oct 08, 2016
Hello tech gurus! I was thinking of buying a modem for browsing with my laptop then this came to mind. Why should I buy a modem wen I can just subscribe with my sim and connect it to my laptop to browse via hotspot. But something tells me that there is something special about modem but I don't know what it is.
So pls guyz help me out here!

What is the major difference between a modem and the sharing of hotspot from a phone to your laptop for browsing and downloading.

I look forward to reasonable contributions as always. Thanks.

Contributions are still highly appreciated.

I've been wondering which is faster too.

But I think most modems have a maximum speed of 7.2Mb/s (megabit/s), so Hotspot probably is faster, since most smartphone internal modem is clocked at at least 14.2Mb/s.

Contemplating buying a modem to save my phone from constant low battery due to Hotspot.

Hello, it all depends on the spead of your network and the phone or modem cap... Most phone has the Hspa clocked at 42 Mbps download and upload 7.2 mbps

If you use a phone , whose network service/data connection runs on lets say probably 20kbps even if you on H+ it will still not be more effective.. do you think that won't be slow..?

While some modem runs 4g lte, 3.5g, 128kbps, 112kbps... So tell me. How will it run faster than a modem

. So does modem enhances the network speed in any way or is it the same as that of a phone.
Re: Differences between a Modem Vs Phone's HotSpot by Gptech(m): 11:31pm On Oct 08, 2016
Have not seen the need for a modem since Hotspot became handy. I consider owning a modem right now wasteful. About the speed difference, have not really taken note of that, but it mostly depends on network speed. I think the highest download speed on most modem is 10.2mb/s, whereas good smartphones can achieve over 30mb/s, which is like triple the speed of modems. So if your network carrier can offer speed more than the maximum of modem, then hotspot is will definitely be faster. On the other hand if the speed from your carrier is under the maximum download speed of your modem then, the modem will most likely be faster and more reliable because it is a wired connection, whereas hotspot which is wireless has its many set backs. To solve that you can make use of usb tethering (of course the quality and speed of the USB cable should affect the speed).

7.2mbps max download speed? U must be talking of these old school 3g usb broadband modems. Even the smallest 4g mifi modem has download speed of up to 150mbps and 50mbps upload. I see no reason to get a usb broadband modem in this era, why not get a 4g modem. I still think a modem is better than hotspot (that is if u have the luxury of both) because

1. A modem will give u longer battery life than ur phone's hotspot because its only job is to supply u with internet while ur phone would have diferent accts syncing, whatsapp, facebpok, gsm, etc.

2. Whenever a call comes into ur phone u will lose internet connection.. it might be that time u are almost through downloading a large file or streaming a video or playing games online. U are going to lose ur progress whenever a call comes in. With a modem u won't worry about that.

3. If u are sharing ur internet with ur friends, then they will be screwed if u have to go out with ur phone. With a modem or router u can just leave it and still go out with ur phone. Or if u are downloading something on ur computer and want to go out, u won't have a problem going with ur phone while ur download continues with the modem.

4. 4g modems have download speed of up to 150mbps,or more. not sure the capacity of mobile hotspots.

Why not just use USB tethering? Elxandre . . . its faster than wireless hotspot and it charges your phone at the same time so that's a win-win

Wait do you know the LTE speed on Cat 12 phone ?
The speed is about 600Mbps/150mbps fact..

So i have a phone cat 12 LTE and a modem cat 4 LTE, which will faster?

Regardless of your speed capacity you can't get more than what Isp is providing

NTEL from user experience has not gotten to 100Mbps which is the LTE entry level.. if you like use modem that has 1Gbps it you wont get a sped higher that a 60$ LTE smartphone using cat4 150/50 Mbps

It still doesn't take away the fact that u will lose internet connection whenever a call comes in. And if u are in the middle of a doownload or playing online games u are going to start allover.

Sir that bolded is not true for my phone..
My calls do not close Internet connection, by the way call and data uses different protocol so they should not affect each other.

Fact.. i use Truecaller, I get the caller name even when im using mobile data... Nothing like data closed for calls...

This happens when i was using nokia 3120c lol

This make a lot of sense ,
but you know some phoneswill not charge using a usb port that is rated 5V 0.5A.. that is the current on most pc..
You need minimum 5V 1A..

Bros ur data will get suspended when u are on a call. Maybe u haven't noticed it but I'm talking from experience. If u have 3g on ur phone, once a call comes in and u answer the 3g will disappear and come back after the call.

No it's not the phone. I've used a bunch of phones and its the same thing. Truecaller connects before u answer the call. Once u answer the call ur internet gets suspended until after the call. This happens a lot whenever I'm playing online on ps4 using my phone's hotspot. Whenever I answer a call I get disconnected from ps4.

Though with 3G you don't lose connection for phone calls.

I'm not buying for 4G though, since it's not available here.

How much is that stuff you're holding?

Shockingly my Windows Phone doesn't have that. grin

Used to do that with my old Symbian several years ago, that I took it for granted.
Lol.

I use hotspot on my phone and charge at the same time with a USB connected to the computer, but I've been worried about ruining the PC battery lifespan in the long run.

Any phone will charge, but the ones with bigger batteries will charge terribly slow, trust it'd be pointless.
