Nigeria’s first lady criticized the president. So he told her to go back to the kitchen.

If you think Donald Trump has problems, consider those of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. Elected last year as a no-nonsense candidate to clean up Africa's biggest democracy, his popularity has fallen amid various spiraling crises — a faltering economy, a deadly insurgency, a devastating famine. And now, even his wife is skeptical.

In an interview with the BBC's Hausa language service, Nigerian first lady Aisha Buhari suggested that she might not back her husband's potential reelection in 2019 if he didn't shake up his government. Without naming names, she said a whole host of people in senior ministerial posts didn't share her husband's values or the vision of the ruling party. The first lady's admission reinforces accusations made by critics that Buhari's government has been hijacked by a cabal operating behind the scenes.

“The president does not know 45 out of 50 of the people he appointed and I don't know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years,” she said. “Some people are sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position.”

According to the BBC, some in Nigeria speculate that the first lady went this route after her own chosen figures did not win the posts they desired in government. Whatever the case, it deepens the gloom around Buhari's presidency, which he won in part on a platform that promised an end to nepotism and cronyism in the country.

Then came Buhari's response. Speaking to reporters while on a trip to Germany, the Nigerian president offered up a tasteless jibe: “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room,” he said.

His remarks were made in front of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who according to reports, glared and then, briefly, laughed.

Just a few months into his well-celebrated reentry into power, President Buhari has become grossly indefencible.
I never wished to be proven right when I earlier opined that this man has a different agenda from the ideals that inspired some of us to campaign for him.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

l was discussing with a friend of mine about the gravity of what Buhari said and he was defending him, saying that he was just joking. Now look at where such a tasteless joke has gotten us.
This goes to show that all is not well in the Buhari family...they've been pretending all this while.

My opinion on the President remain unequivocal.
His unnecessarily delayed ministerial appointments in the face of inherited economic and security crisis gave him away as one who is either out to play politics or as one who has made himself available for the promotion of certain parochial interests.
What's worse? His nepotistic tendencies hasn't made it easier for some of us (Christians, from the SS) that still strive to defend him...against all odds.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in the President's speech that is degrading. Except you believe that the kitchen is a terrible place. Which makes the proud and professional chefs and cooks second class citizens. Don't fall for feminist agenda's, be smart.

Why are people this critical?

He say his ''wife'' belong to his kitchen and his living room not ''your wife'' or ''our wives''

If that is the role they agreed between them that she fill ,what is every ones headache?

You might choose to giv ''your wife'' a different responsibility but thats you.

Moreover, she has been travelling all over the place so which time does she even go to the kitchen?

Just like history was made in the unseating of an incumbent president via the ballot box, history is being made by a first lady publicly disagreeing with, even threatening the president of the country. Karma is a b...tch. Those that sow wind reap whirlwind.

I left my family to sleep over at my former area just to vote for this man, I persuaded a lot of voters to vote for this man. I am disappointed in myself, I couldn't comment since last year because I have been observing all these things as well, This man is truly a mistake. I dislike men who still think of woman like this. A man who betrayed his benefactors and now his own family because of power, I may not like Jonathan but he is not power drunk, He respects women as a responsible man should, This buhari may divorce his wife and take in a 14yr old bride. I honestly don't want to complain before because I know some people will take advantage of it

I am not surprised at all.

By the time this administration is over, Nigerian image in the international community would have been reduced to nothing.

It's a pity!

How is the office superior to the kitchen? If Aisha Buhari says my Husband belongs to the office would you find it offensive? You are just a little child easily manipulated by feminist themed attack on men.

I repeat for block heads like you to understand...there is absolutely nothing wrong in buhari's speech!

yes I knew a worthless e-hypocrite will find my trouble. If I just stepped into Nigeria today I wouldn't know that not even up to year ago a gender equality bill was thrown into the dustbin because it was unpopular with almost 99% Nigerian men both in government and outside government. Now this maggot is questioning my reasoning, me that was among the silenced 1%? what changed in a year? why are Nigerians fighting for their women now? because of the hatred for Buhari.
I just look at where Nigerians are heading I don't know. People that know what is right keep doing what is wrong. failed people. and you people will keep failing because change is faraway grin
