Well, when Ewuare I ascended the throne in 1440 AD, he brought in political & societal reforms that that were for the time quite radical. With time, he built an empire & is generally considered Benin's greatest Oba yet.

So taking the title Ewuare II is laden with a lot of meaning. Reforms will be radical, even with the limited power traditional rulers now have. Within the ambit of traditional powers.

Now, beer parlour rumour is more popular than truth on Nairaland.

While an Oba can encourage & urge people to do things in a certain cultural way, outrightly forbidding individual things is not the norm in modern times. Oba ceased to be political head of state in 1897.

Night burials were never really forbidden. In villages night burials remain normal & popular. In November last year, for an old relative who died & was buried in the village, one dance was in the day (because her children's social clubs coming from the city would not travel at night or do night function) & the other dance was during the night which the neighboring villages came to.

Only cities mostly changed in the last 20 years or so. And it has more to do with safety: security issues, bad roads/accidents and a changing society. Most people now go to church. The typical Saturday night dance into Sunday morning is not popular anymore. Night dance are now typically Friday nights. Saturday daytime dance & thanksgiving on Sunday of it.
