There is now a silent but dangerous standoff
between African champions Super Falcons and
the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as the team have still been left in the dark as regards their bonuses and allowances.


“No official has been to see the girls at the Agura Hotel. There has been no message from the office (NFF). We are all in the dark as concerns our money,” a team official opened up.


Earlier, top officials had suggested the team will
be attended to when the banks reopen for
business today.

We have now further learnt that the players were paid 500,000 Naira each and officials received 400,000 Naira for them not to boycott their AWCON semi-final against South Africa.

“What we are all asking now is what was the
money meant for? Part of our bonuses or
allowances?”

The cash situation is so serious that star defender Onome Ebi’s injured arm cannot be operated on at the National Hospital in Abuja.

Ebi suffered a serious arm injury and barely
managed to finish the AWCON final against
Cameroon on Saturday.

The cost of the surgery has been put at 500,000 Naira.

The NFF have not been forthcoming with the
money for the surgery, while raising serious
questions about whether the team were insured
for the biennial championship.

Midfielder Ngozi Okobi also suffered a leg injury in the final and had to be ferried on a wheel chair on arrival at the airport in Nigeria.

SUPER FALCONS STAR ORDEGA REGRETS
PLAYING FOR NIGERIA

USA-based forward Francisca Ordega has
regretted playing for the Super Falcons, saying
she would have opted for another country
because of the lack of support for women’s
football in Nigeria.

Ordega won her third women’s AFCON in
Cameroon last weekend and has also represented Nigeria at U17 and U20 levels, but she said the neglect of women’s football by the country is most regrettable.

“If I had not played for Nigeria at full international level, trust me I would have played somewhere else,” a frustrated Ordega blasted.

“The U17 and U20 teams have been blamed for
the performances at their recent World Cups, but they were poorly prepared for these competitions.

“If this continues, Nigeria will soon cease to be a force in Africa because there will be no future
Super Falcons.”

The Falcons are presently in Abuja waiting to be

While African champions Super Falcons were
forced to sleep at the Yaounde airport all through Saturday night, we have scooped that broke Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) allegedly
splashed a whooping 42 million Naira for a special flight for top officials to cheer the team to victory in Cameroon.



The huge cost of the chartered flight has also
raised serious questions about accountability and due process as the payment was done a
marketing agent on behalf of the NFF.

A top source reported that NFF President Amaju
Pinnick led 10 other top officials flew on a special chartered flight, which interestingly did not originate from Nigeria.


“The shame of it was that they flew in, watched
the game and flew out without even addressing
the team,” said the source.

But while the NFF bosses were cruising in
comfort, the Falcons encountered a difficult time
to return to Nigeria.

They were at the Yaounde airport before midnight with the hope to connect a local flight to Douala for the onward journey to Lagos, Nigeria.

Their plane to Douala did not arrive in Yaounde till early morning Sunday and so the Falcons were forced to stay put at the airport till they left for Yaounde.


The Falcons are now holed up in their hotel in
Abuja waiting to be paid off by the NFF after they clinched the AWCON for a record eighth time on Saturday.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has insisted that the Glass House has been able to manage the economic meltdown within the sports circles.

The President, Amaju Pinnick explained the funds constraints by some age grade teams like the Falconets.

Sequel to reports of untold hardship experienced by the Falconets during their sojourn to Papua New Guinea for the FIFA U-20 Women’s Championship, the NFF President opined that teams like Falconets should concentrate more on developing themselves rather than expecting huge financial rewards from the NFF.





Pinnick added: “Sports is all about money and the truth is that Nigeria is going through recession. I want you to name one sector of the economy that is doing very well because there is recession but give and take, we still give ourselves a pat on the back, we are almost in the World Cup, we won the only medal in the Olympics, we made our presence in Jordan, in Papua New Guinea. I don’t think we have done badly in spite of the challenges. We have a lot of distractions and challenges in finance, if you were the NFF President what would you do?”

Nigeria won the African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) for the 8th time after a 1–0 win over Cameroun in Yaounde. The winning goal was scored by Desire Oparanozie for Nigeria to retain the trophy they won in Namibia two years ago. This is the third time Nigeria is defeating Cameroun in the history of the AWCON competition, the Lionesses lost the AWCON title to Nigeria in the 2004 edition when lost 5 – 0, then in the 2014 edition, Nigeria beat Cameroun 2 – 0 courtesy of goals from Asisat Oshoala and Desire Oparanozie.

Nigeria won AWCON the title in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2014 but lost two editions of the competitions to Equatorial Guinea in 2008 and 2012. The Super Falcons have shown dedication over the years by qualifying for every tournament. They have won the tournament back to back by staying consistent, a feat which has been arduous for the Super Eagles. But the Super Falcons are still underappreciated and often disrespected compared to their male counterparts.

The Super Falcons returned to the country on Sunday after their victory but not without allegations of shoddy treatment by the Nigeria Football Federation. NFF officials and sports minister, Solomon Dalung, reportedly travelled on a chartered flight to Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon where the Super Falcons played their final match against the tournament hosts. The football officials and the sports minister allegedly left the stadium for the airport without meeting with the victorious Nigerian team. According to sports journalist, Jessica Amadi, who was with the team, while the Super Falcons were made to travel to Douala by road, the administrators left on a chartered flight. The journalist on Sunday stated that flight arrangements were later made for the team.

The African champions who flew to Douala for a connecting trip to Nigeria, however, had to travel without their bags due to the size of the Camair-co plane used in conveying the team. The team’s luggage were therefore transported to Douala by road. Amadi, in a series of posts on her Twitter page, reported that the Nigerian High Commission in Cameroon expressed its disappointment with the manner the NFF officials conducted themselves.

But this has been the narrative for over a decade, former Nigerian star, Vera Okolo also spilled the beans about the dismal way the Super Falcons were treated by the NFF at the 2004 African Women’s Championship in South Africa. She spoke about her displeasure at the welfare of the players while on duty for their country. The former African Women Footballer of the Year nominee lamented how the Nigerian Football Federation abandoned the team in terms of match bonuses and feeding. She explained how the team overcame these challenges with help of Nigerians in South Africa.

The Super Falcons have won the Women’s Africa Nations Cup more than any other country and made it to every Women’s World Cup since the FIFA competition began in 1991. Despite the honours the women’s team has won for the nation, they are still being treated as second-class citizens compared to their male counterparts who failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations kicking off in Gabon at the start of 2017 and have failed to qualify for two consecutive editions. News reports stated that the Falcons were paid a paltry 10,000 naira each after they successfully booked a ticket to the 2016 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations which is in contrast with the men’s team, whose players get paid 800,000 naira each for a draw and 1 million naira for a win. The women are also reportedly still owed their bonuses for qualifying for last year’s World Cup in Canada. The women received 100,000 naira for every match won at the World Cup, while the men got 760, 000 naira. And while the male team was lodged in five-star hotels, the women’s team was regularly kept in substandard accommodation, said Nnamdi Okosieme. But this scenario is not peculiar to Nigeria alone. The USA women’s national team stepped up its case for equal pay during a segment of CBS’s 60 Minutes, landing a spot on the traditional post-NFL Sunday show and claiming that women deserve to be paid not just the same as the men, but more.

For a long time now, the Super Falcons have been playing for peanuts and the poor treatment of the women’s football team by the NFF is another symptom of the rot of gender inequality that has eaten into many sectors of society. The Super Falcons deserve to be given as much respect and appreciation as their male counterparts, and it is high time Nigeria started celebrating her football heroines.

leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation held showdown talks with players and officials of the Super Falcons on Tuesday, December 6 at Agura Hotel, Area 10 Abuja.


Upon their return from Cameroon where they
successfully defended the African Women Cup of Nations, players refused to be decamped unless they are paid their outstanding entitlements.

During the meeting, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick insulted the players, and made it crystal clear that the Federation have no money to pay the players, and told them they won’t get paid even if they remain at the hotel until January.


Pinnick only offered the players their traveling
expenses but the players held their ground not to vacate the hotel.

The NFF supremo later sent General Secretary,

Football, Ruth David, to appeal to the players but they remained adamant.


All the players that defended the colours of
Nigeria at the AWCON are still with the squad
except Guingamp striker Desire Oparanozie who
left the team on Monday and will return to France today to join her club.

Pinnick has no problem flying a chartered 40 million Naira plane to watch the finals in Cameroon which is next door to Nigeria, but he sees nothing wrong in owing players. He seems to have blocked the mouth of journalists with money. Colin Udoh was pathetic in his attempt to defend Pinnick the other day. Toyin Ibitoye is now Super eagles media officer, so his mouth is officially shut. The players are now on their own, except if the federal government steps in and probe NFF ASAP.
NFF got 100 million naira from FG in an ambush stategy when we wanted to play Zambia. The match bonus for that match is still being owed the players. NFF is not broke. pledged to pay the Falcons bonuses and
allowances for qualifying, the team played and
won without bonuses and allowances paid. They
have since embarked on a protest following their
return from Cameroon.

One of the players told BBC Sport that their sit-in at the Agura hotel in the capital will not end until they receive all bonuses, which totals US$23,650 (about N11.5m) per player.

“We are not leaving this hotel and we have not
been told exactly when we are going to get paid,” the player, who insisted on anonymity, told BBC Sport.

“The plan is to stay here until we all receive the
money because the moment we leave there will
be no opportunity to get it again.”

Nigeria's minister of sports Solomon Dalung has
admitted that the Federal Government did not
expect the Super Falcons to win Women's Africa
Cup of Nations which ended in Cameroon on
Saturday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.


The ladies, who won the competition for the
Tenth time in the tournament format era, have
not been paid their entitlements and are staging
a protest.

Although the Super Falcons went into the
tournament as defending champions and
favourites, Dalung claimed that their triumph in
Cameroon somehow came as a surprise and the
authorities were not prepared for it.

“Don’t forget that nobody even knew the team would emerge victorious," Dalung told State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday.

“If we were confident they would emerge
victorious, all the federation would have done was to plan for the process of participation and
entitlement.

“It is already established in sports tradition, when you win this is what you are entitled to.

“The situation is highly unfortunate and I don’t
like it. These girls have given confidence to
women who want to embrace sports, so this will
go a long way in killing this laudable
achievement. It is unfortunate but we will make
sure the right thing is done."

The Nigeria Football Federation claimed that they paid the players N500,000 each in Cameroon but were not able to settle the rest of the entitlements due to a cash crunch.

Some have put the figure being owed the players at as much as over N200m in allowances and bonuses.

They hinder preparations, make players travel arrangements disrupted. The Flamingoes and Falconets were obvious cases. The Falcons did not read the script, and I support them for the full showdown.

Former Super Falcons Striker and Nigeria football Legend, Mercy Akide-Udoh has suggested that her Children “will never play for Nigeria” if the poor treatment of players persists in the Football Federation.


Akide-Udoh , who was a member of Nigeria’s
pioneer Falcons team, was named the first African Women Footballer of the Year in 2001 and also won accolades in 1999 and 2004 when she was named in the FIFA World All-Star.

The 41-year-old slammed the unrepentant Nigeria football administrators for the unpaid allowances of the Super Falcons, who despite the many unsavory conditions, won the 2016 Africa Women Cup of Nations title.


”They fought with everything, so it should have
been a happy ending. These kids have families,
their parents are waiting for them to come back
and put food on the table,” she told BBC Sport.

Super Falcons assistant captain Osinachi Ohale
has said the African champions were threatened
by NFF boss Amaju Pinnick among other harsh
comments directed at them.

Ohale said that among other things Pinnick
threatened to report them to their various
overseas clubs.

“He said so many things including that he will
report us to our clubs if we are bent on disgracing Nigeria,” Ohale opened up.

“This was not what he was telling us when he
addressed us in Abuja before we left for Cameroon (for the women’s AFCON).”

The star defender also revealed that top NFF
official Chris Green promised the Falcons they will be paid all their monies while they were still in Cameroon.


Skipper Rita Chikwelu broke down when she
responded to the message of sports minister
Solomon Dalung, who pleaded with the team to
be patient as all their entitlements will be cleared.

Chikwelu said the Falcons are deeply disappointed with the authorities, while also revealing she has just received news of the death of her grandmother.


Despite Thursday’s assurances from the sports
minister, the Falcons have insisted they will only
quit their Abuja hotel after they have been paid.

Protesting Super Falcons defied Nigerian sports
minister Solomon Dalung by insisting they be
paid their entitlements before they will quit their
Abuja hotel.

Dalung visited the African champions Thursday
and pleaded with them to be patient because all
their monies will be paid to them.

However, assistant captain Osinachi Ohale told
the minister that the team insist on staying put
till they are paid.

“The NFF only reported the minister’s visit and his reassurances, they did not report that the Falcons refused to change their position,” an official disclosed.

“The minister told the girls his doors are open to them should they change their mind and go
home and wait for their monies to be transferred
to their accounts.”


Besides the daily allowances and match bonuses put at more than $16,500-a-player, the Falcons are also owed for the 2016 Olympic qualifier against Equatorial Guinea, the AWCON qualifier against Senegal as well as last year’s All Africa Games.

Remember he was one of the only officials who showed up for the finals and he always speaks highly of the falcons. The man is standing up to his own government for these girls so I don't see why people are bashing him.
