There's something called scale of preference and opportunity cost you know...
What Nigeria needs urgently now is constant electricity and working refineries...
And this trend of calling everyone haters is absurd...
Moreover, I cannot commend this as there are no timelines given...you cannot be planning something and there are no timelines....

Since food, Power and Employment are the only problems you see, maybe we should close all ministries, sack all ministers except those of Agriculture Power and Employment. .

You want timelines, blame the journalists. Full project life cycle is included in the agreement documents signed with the Chinese. If you want it, i believe the ministry can provide. #FreedomOfInformation

yes, We ll have more gas. Also, addressing corruption will improve MW generated. Apart from security, no other sector has received fund from fg than the power sector since 1999
dude, all the generation stations we have now cannot generate more than 7000MW if they are all working at full capacity.

Nigerian needs at least 60,000MW to have constant electricity to cater for domestic and industrial needs. But we can start small. 1000MW addition a year is better than nothing. That means more infrastructure, and then good management to follow.

You talk of corruption as of it is limited to the power sector. So there isn't corruption in the communications sector that they want to waste limited funds on?

Let's face the most important things first. If we have constant electricity, we'd be able to advance technologically and future generations can even learn to build satellites.

NB:
- South Africa generates about 52,000MW, and they aren't as populated as us.
- US generates 1000+GW, that is, more than 1,000,000MW, for a population about twice ours.
And you think militants are the real reason we don't have constant electricity.

CeoNewshelm:
The Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu on Monday said Nigeria has planned to build and launch two additional satellites to space to improve local communication capacity.

This is coming as the Minister warned that Nigeria must not scare away MTN as lawmakers investigate alleged illegal money transfers just three months after the government fined Africa’s biggest telecoms firm over $1 billion.

Shittu said the new satellites will be build using a $550 million loan from the Export-Import Bank of China, which will cover 85% of the cost while Nigeria will finance the other 15 per cent.

The minister, thereby call on domestic and foreign investors to take part in the funding.

Recall that the minister had during a town hall meeting in Kaduna on the one year anniversary of President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, said legislation would be made to protect investment, patronage and compel Nigerian institutions to host their information locally.

He said then that Nigeria would launch two additional satellites to space to improve local communication capacity because businesses in Nigeria were skeptical of linking the only satellite Nigeria has because of fear of crash.

Communication is vital to business.

While I am no fan of the APC government or this minister in particular launching satellites for this purpose is perfectly understandable.

It is for the private businesses to launch satellites. ...and the FG to give them the license to operate such. Same as.... trucks are vital to business.... you are a manufacturer... is it the responsibility of the FG to provide you with trucks?... or to provide the conditions for you to operate the trucks?

As usual Captain Obvious and his gang has struck again!

What good did the previous birds do us and why are Nigerians still having this absurd "my bulky ignorance is equivalent to you knowledge" mentality.

We don't need satellites, we want them and there is no law preventing anyone from a want just don't mistake your want for a need.

We need electricity
We need food
We need a better health systems and infrastructures.
We need a good maintenance culture.
We need a continuity in governance and infrastructures.
Please take your loan and increase our investments in the agroindustries.

To mention a few: Food security, Natural disaster prediction, resource monitoring etc.

On the other hand, calculate the funds pumped into the power sector from 1999 till date and tell me why we are still talking about generating 60000MW. This is a sector that gets money year in- year out, yet nothing to show for it. That's a wrong approach in solving the problem. You can't expect a different result from using same method.

Bros, I don't think there is anybody who will say launching satellite is not good but we have a million more priority ahead of it at this moment. For goodness sake, 550m USD can get us 2 medium sized modular refineries which will solve our immediate fuel problems and boast our naira. etc So why take loan for something like that when there are more pressing issues?

And you'd use your generator to constantly monitor the satellite feedback? We don't need another satellite.

We need electricity, we need fuel, we need food. Give Nigerians those, and they would build you a spaceship before January 24, 2117.

How much have been pumped into getting more generation stations? Tell me, so we can look up how much have been spent on maintaining Aso Rock alone. Then we'd look up countries that are faring better and see how much they have spent on infrastructure for power generation.

Good move. They should digitize everything and they should make internet more available and cheaper. Once they get power supply right plus this satelitte stuff, then Nigeria is ready to fly. Full real time satellite coverage of Nigeria is about mostly everything.

No serious Government will face JUST ONE Problem and ignore other ones. Growth and development comes by attending to all issues as much as you can.
If we don't have our own, we will pay for satellite information from other countries. Its as simple as that.

There are more critical issues, issues like extreme hunger and a failing economy. There should be a scale of preference, impoverishing ourself just to seem like we belong is just tantamount to lying to ourselves. it's just synonymous with that adage about going broke just to look rich.
