This question was asked at an interview I attended,'what is the role of a PR executive within an organization and what are the first 5 things you do immediately after resumption in an organization that never had a PR.

Dear PR experts, kindly come to my aid. I have only worked with brands, so i had nothing/no experience as a PR within an organization.

Please don't ask me to check google, cause I already did...

I just need practical examples from PR experts.

thank you.

Depends on if their structure separates PR from Marketing. If PR is under the Marketing team, then likely what they will want from you is a communication plan encompassing social media, print media, broadcast media and BTL/creative engagement ideas. You will likely have very little/no budget available, so your ideas have to be strong enough either to fly without much money or to convince management to back you with a bigger budget.
If PR is separate from Marketing, then aside from the above, they will also want your plan to include things like print and broadcast media interviews, and then you will likely oversee any external PR agency they hire to do any PR work that cannot be done in-house. You will be held responsible for all work, not the agency, so keep that in mind.

What else...OK you will also have to create a content plan, which is separate to your communication plan. Your content plan will set out in some detail what you intend to plug in to which platform to engage your audiences optimally.

First things you will do after getting: Familiarise yourself with your brand's voice/tone, so you can assume the brand personality when you start interacting with its audience; Introduce yourself to all external stakeholders that will help your job, such as journalists, bloggers, social media bigshots, etc; Get a briefing from the board or Head of Marketing regarding what they want to achieve with their PR engagement over the next 3 months, 6 months and 1 year; In line with the result of the briefing, create a comprehensive communication plan and content plan; Find out what your brand can offer to journalists, stakeholders, SM heavy hitters or even general audiences to make your engagement easier (be smart when asking this question so it doesn't look like you want to ask for money to bribe people for coverage - that makes you look incompetent.

Good luck!

Ps, I used to work in Nigeria's biggest PR agency and I have also been a PR manager on client side, so take the advice about not blatantly asking for an honorarium budget serious. Nobody wants to spend serious money on PR so if they're bringing you in, they're expecting you to have really strong ideas. If you don't have ideas, go to Quora or Reddit and steal some. Everybody does it.

Hmmm. Some people don't steal ideas from Reddit etc. and have over 15years experience in PR so please do not generalise.

When it comes to developing strategies/ideas, its good to generate case studies for yourself and ask people to help you critic it. Doing this often helps broaden your thoughts and you will be surprised you will become a guru PR practitioner.

Its not about getting the job now but being a faculty. Look at the long run and not the short term.

Never actually bothered with NIPR certification, especially as I no longer work in Communication, but I have lots of colleagues who are certified. I can give you a couple of people to contact.

Not in Nigeria. Nigerian businesses are all about the short term and do not give you time to learn and grow. They expect you to be a guru right from the start, and if you have a learning curve, you'll be out on your backside almost as soon as you come in. It's a harsh environment, particularly in PR, which most of them think of as a cheap substitute for advertising, as against a completely different layer of communication. I'm just giving the OP a realistic picture of what to expect, so she goes in prepared.

This is Nigeria, where one clueless marketing oga once tried to place literal revenue targets on every piece of content that went out when I was PR manager, including tweets and #TBT novelty posts on Instagram. And reacted angrily when I suggested that it was impossible to expect audiences to magically whip out their cards and make purchase decisions everytime they see a tweet from xyz company asking them to buy something. He literally placed a N1m monthly target on my engagement. Is that how PR is measured? Of course not. Is it even possible to measure or evaluate using revenue? Of course not.

But this is Nigeria.

I didn't want to dignify your response with an answer, but I think I should. And all I would say is this: When people who know come up with solutions, it's better u keep shut if u really have nothing sensible to add. Follow that advise to the latter and see where it gets u.... This is 2017, young man, the world has moved ahead from battering and trading words with u. You will only tire yourself out if u embark on that journey believe me bc u trying to get my attention won't work. Try weighing your response with all the others, did it make u seem smart or a buffoon; having embarrassed yourself in such manner? When will u grow up? smh.... I understand you have nothing doing, but don't abuse the privilege of doing nothing.....'nuf said
