What warrant the specification of raft foundation for this type of soil; seeing clearly that the soil is a soil with moderate soil bearing capacity?

Rebars for columns inserted and formwork done awaiting concrete work.

A test was conducted and it was found.that there is an underlying layer of clay material which you know is plastic in nature

Concrete work on-going

Ok.

Ya.
To avoid an uneven settlement which may result in collapse, hence this kind of foundation.

I know. Just been curious alil cos what I was seeing was in no way suggesting a bad soil, but you kudzu cleared it that it has an underlying clay deposit.

Casting of beams cimpleted and block work done to approved level. Note, this level is to avoid flooding of the area as it is close to a river.

Re: Construction of a Duplex With Raft Foundation. by penitential(m): 11:51am On Mar 02, 2017
@op, don't you think it will be more advisable to increase the height of the raft beam, cos its likely water might weaken the blocks

Does a raft foundation allow for German Flooring? When is the German Flooring done? Because it seems you commenced block work immediately after.

Just curious.

This is not raft foundation...i think u can call this reinforced concrete deep strip depending on the depth of the ground beam..

We have three type of raft foundation & this doesn't fall into any...

The height of the raft is 1200mm alone. Then we have 3couch of block work.
From wat we have at site, I wanted 2couch but the architect with the owner chose it this way.
This level now is far above the road in front of the house, and slightly that at the back.
So frm level of water checked year in and out, water cannot get to the blocks

So people, the work is progressing.
After the block work, comes the boarding and casting of the short columns to DPC level.
Filling is ongoing rite now. I will upload pix wen I get to the site soon.

Questions will be entertained asap.

I concur with you but I really want to see the end before sharing my view. unless there is a capping beam and ground floor reinforcements and the block wall filled solid with concrete then this is far from raft foundation and it cannot function as raft. This is the type of foundation somebody did for Mr QC1 if my memory serves me right, in this case the possibility of uneven settlement could be higher.
If this is not closed as raft, a reinforced strip footing and pad foundation would have been ideal.

Just curious.

The block work is part of the foundation. This was done to raise the level of the DPC.
wat ever happen in constructing the road leading to compound will never affect the house.

For education purposes, can you pls do me the honour by naming them.

I know of slab and beam raft and that is wat we are doing.

I will be waiting to share in the info.
Regards.

Tomorrow being Friday, we will do the forming(block setting out), and hopefully take it to the window level.

The rain has come upon us here in the city.

Just curious from my knowledge of Structural Safety.

I was thinking the DPC should be a continuous structure. This seems as if you made them in parts/sections.

Secondly, if the Block Work is part of the foundation (to gain some height) how well will the hollow blocks bear the load transferred from the DPC? I would have thought the DPC would be directly on the Raft Casting? That way, load from the block work and lintels (on the ground floor) will go the the DPC and transferred to the Raft Foundation. I cant help but feel that the block work might give way.

Anyway, neat Iron works for the foundation. Very neat and straight.

Thanks for the observation.
Jus so you know, the slab has internal beam running along the beamlime or block line which will transfer wat ever load that will be coming to the slab to the columns and down to the foundation.

Thanks for the compliment.@ neat work

Good day everyone.
It’s been awhile since I last post. Very busy running around job sites lately.
Well, I jus want to show you the level of this work so far.
I didnt want to bore you guys with block work cos that is a normal routine at various site.
The pix below shows the stage of work we are rite now.
Blocks have been leveled and the formwork for the first floor slab done awaiting the reinforcements.

this is good job, well detailed but i must also say this is pure waste of money.
i still don't understand the reason behind excavating the NG(natural Ground) to receive the Raft beams, then starts adding block walls to increase the level.
the ideal practice is to scrap the NG a little atleast to remove top soil, then blind, then erect your form-works, reinforcements and then cast.
