Toyota Tundra Experience by Mrcharming(m): 1:04pm On Mar 10, 2017
Hi house, am thinking of buying a 2007 Toyota Tundra. I want to use it as daily driver and for my farm runs because the road to the farm is pretty bad and my 2010 Honda Accord cannot cope with the terrible road. Is there anyone who has driven the truck before? I would like to hear your experience with the vehicle? Is it worth buying? What is the maintenance cost like? Thanks all.

Why drive a V8 tundra, I have driven V8 trucks and SUV in very rough terrain, they handle it quite OK, but tundra is extreme, the mpeg is bad for too long off road. There are smaller trucks that will get the job done perfectly. If you just like the tundra, it's a good and reliable truck.

Toyota hilux (4 cylinder)
Toyota Tacoma (V6)
NISSAN navara/Frontier (very formidable no holds barred rugged off road vehicle)
Mitsubishi L200 (very very under rated)
Ford Ranger/Mazda B series 4th and 5th edition only ( if you know much about cars you can try it)

Please do not try the Ford DangerRanger/Mazda B series. It should not even be in discussion when talking about Tundra.

If you will be moving heavy loads then Tundra is obviously the right choice. If you are not moving as heavy load then I will personally go for either the Toyota Hilux (4 cylinder) or the Tacoma (4 or 6 cylinder) for daily driving and farm work.

2007 Tundras also come in V6 and the 4.0L engine/motor it comes with is the same as the Tacoma V6. The 4 cylinder Tacoma motor/engine is 2.7L and you will obvious get way better gas mileage with them.

The Tundra size advantage is only for haulage (pulling a trailer) it's not for carrying any heavy load. It's part will be expensive as its a sequoia in truck form.

The op said for off road, the Tacoma is not even the best of the lot, the Frontier comes first only because it is cheaper than the hilux.

I will pick a Mitsubishi L200 over Toyota Tacoma.

Ask for the mazda/ford I was specific with year, you need to make research well the engine in that car is very popular in Lagos ibadan inter state vehicles. The engine alone is fitted to alot of Mazda and Ford though they aren't popular, it's just like saying the Toyota condor and Echo are not reliable because they aren't popular

We all have our opinions but we cannot shy away from fact. Fact is even the V6 Tundra has a stronger suspension and overall drive train than the Tacoma. With the V8 4.7L or 5.7L motored Tundra, one is talking about way more significant hauling and carrying power with the overall drive train and package.

The agree the Mitsubishi L200 is a respectable truck and I was close to buying one about 5 years ago but, except for it being cheaper, there is absolutely no reason I will take it over a Tacoma.

Look, I have used both Ford Ranger and Mazda B series truck of those exact editions you listed. There is a reason why you see them on the road a lot and it has nothing to do with their dependability. It has everything to do with their price. They are cheap and so for a reason. I will not touch them with an hundred foot pole except I am desperate. If you had to but either of them, just make sure you buy a manual transmission.

@OP, considering you will be driving on farm roads and relatively bad roads, make sure you buy a 4X4 and not 2X4. The V6 Tundra is awesome. I had a colleague that had Tundra and I actually sold it for him. I currently have a 07 4Runner V8 and 01 4Runner V6. The 4Runner, Tacoma and Tundra vehicles are overall topnotch in my opinion

Well we all have our own opinion. I am not saying the Tundra isn't good or reliable I am just talking in terms of priority. He needs something for off road not a off road hauler.

I have driven 4 cars in a terrible off road, am talking of erosion, mud filled, stony, rocky, tree stump, flooded. If am to rate the vehicles in terms of performance

1. Frontier
2. L200
3. Toyota Tacoma/Lincoln Navigator
I have not driven the hilux through the road though and that same road I see the 4th generation Mazda used to carry cassava and fire wood to town.

You lost all credibility comparing Lincoln Navigator off road performance to a Tacoma. Lincoln Navigator is a worthless and expensive vehicle made by Ford. Again, the B series/Ranger is common all because of their price. There is a reason why Mazda broke away from Ford. Ford's standard became so low that it was tainting Mazda's reputation. I have used enough Mazdas to know this. I will put my money on Tacoma outperforming any mid-sized truck. It's not even a debate.

Why?, I drove all those cars in the same road, why do you think the Navigator is a worthless vehicle, I am done with you, you are biased. Yes the Navigator is an expensive vehicle to acquire but it's not an expensive vehicle to maintain at all. In its three years with us, only compressor has been changed.

I will pick a Lincoln Navigator over a Toyota landcruiser or Lexus variant because I have driven it before and I know what one will be missing playing it safe

You are very funny, now let me educate you, Ford parts are only expensive because they don't get damaged like Toyota. They are built to last so before you will see customer as a Ford part seller, it will take long.

Have you driven a Lincoln Navigator? If the answer is no, then don't argue with someone who has driven a Navigator over 1000km and I have not had any course to regret.

Keep wallowing in the Toyota is the best car in the world.

We should all remember the opinion given here has been based on personal experience not perceived.

In the market play the Navigator has not fared well compared to the Escalade and the Land Cruiser sells a fraction of the competition.

Toyota might make good small trucks but their full size trucks are not hot in the market.

The small ford ranger was discontinued in the US to focus on F150 they are still being built outside US (SA and Thailand)

The ones you see is probably built in south africa part supply should be from SA or where Nigerian parts come from, that should explain why they are cheaper. The hilux in Nigeria is probably built in SA too

Presently Toyota is not necessarily making the best small truck in the market, the Tacoma and Frontier are old so need new models

Educate me on cars? I was a car dealer for years. It's very obvious you have no clue what you are talking about. None! First to answer you, I had a 2003 Ford Expedition for over a year. Mine was Eddie Bauer and it has the same motor and drive train as a Navigator. I do not put it in the same category as a midsize truck like L200, Ranger or Tacoma so why would I even try to compare their performance like you were trying to do earlier? In what ways would I compare a V8 monster with a 4 cylinder rice burner (L200)?

For crying out loud, I guarantee you I have bought more original Ford and Toyota parts than you. Educate me on cars? I work on them. Ford OEM parts (Motorcraft) are some of the cheapest you'll find out there compared to other make. You better start looking for a better part supplier. Ford resale value is one of the worst. Go ahead, go compare a Navigator to a Land Cruiser yourself. Do yearly comparison from say 2003 to date and see for yourself.

Gather your thought process before typing and stop bouncing around the place. Not that it would matter anymore because I won't reply you but it will help you in the future.

Yes, in general, I prefer Toyotas to other makes. The preference comes from my encounters in dealing hundreds of vehicles.

Educate me on cars? I have not read a thing from you that points towards you having better knowledge in this field than I have.

In the US, the only midsize/small truck Toyota make is the Tacoma. Frontier is Nissan. Tacomas are not so hot in Nigeria I suppose but they are the most sold midsized truck in the US. Their sales is part of why the Rangers were stop being produced at least for the main time. The Rangers I think are still being built in Australia. I saw some in SW Asia late last year that I believed were imported from Australia.

You have not said anything out of extra ordinary I have driven this cars in off road and I can tell you a Tacoma has got nothing to out class a Navigator off road where the Tacoma will go, I have gladly taken the Navigator and it performed well. Ask about the old abeokuta Igbo Ora road.

There is no need not to compare, I was not comparing speed, luxury or build quality. I was simply comparing off road ability. grin

Then why the large cargo bucket?
Why the over 4 ton tow capability?
Why the 4×4 drive train or 2×4 drive train?
Guy tundras are underestimated. Theyre more useful than hilux although more complex and less fuel efficient due in part to their engine and also their physical stats.
When I was in building construction, I used a Titan 5.6l RWD. I regularly carried over 2tons of cargo (either bags of cement, blocks, grave or even boulders) in its bay. That is same capability as a tundra if not less.

You will never go wrong with the Tundra V6. Because you said you plan to buy the 2007 model, you won't have to worry about the radiator issues. Some pre 2007 models had issues with radiators where coolant mixes with transmission fluid. This usually happens after about 200,000 kms and it usually damages the transmissions. I know some that happened to. It happens to 4runners too and all one has to do is change the radiator at around 200,000 km so as not take chances. That new radiator will last another 200,000 km.

The other thing is the frame/chassis rust issue. I know in the US they had a recall for the pre 2007 models to inspect the frames for rust and rot and if they were bad, they would change it for free. Again, that pre 2007.

There is no dick measuring contest here, I didn't mean it won't carry much more stuff than the midsized trucks, I just meant it's bigger to pull whatever trailer attached to it easily.

I have not dis the Tundra at all what I am telling the op is if he just needs a vehicle for off road he should look for better midsized that can do the job, I never added any American car in my first comment

If the Tundra is what you wanna settle for, go for it, it will all what an off road truck will do, there is no denying it's ruggedness and reliability.

The V6 or V8 engine is good as other Toyota vehicles will share engine and probably parts with it.

Sorry if I caused trouble/confuse you Goodluck and God bless

I am not the real owner but it's my sisters ride, I only use the Navigator for farm runs and for travelling through rough terrain but she drives it thrice a week atleast.

It's not a complicated vehicle or an expensive vehicle to maintain though not good on gas in city/traffic driving. Around 4xx km on full tank combined. The only issue we had was AC, rust had made the compressor leak and couldn't be repaired. It was fixed a month ago for 70k. The Navigator year is 2000 with a 5.4L 32 Intech V8 engine 320hp.

No other thing has been worked on in all its 3 years

2004 even stronger than the tundra the only major repair was changing of the driver side hub.the windows are manual, no central lock. apart from that its OK and the ac is very very very cool.
its a 4.7l v8 engine. mpg depends on the way you drive it. and it very quick.
I personally don't put my feet down one the pedal.

I beg to differ, year for year, the tundra is a more reliable truck. Its rated above other trucks in terms of reliability. In general motor reliability ranking, an averagely reliably truck.
