I am glad to see this as I am preparing for my boards in May and haven't started working yet. I was just wondering as a new nurse where do they typically place us as I'm not too sure I want to start out doing medsurg but I was told this is best if you need critical care experience to prep for Masters.

Well, a career goal of mine is to either 1.) work as a nurse anesthetist, as I enjoy the OR experience and don't think that I would just want to be a circulating nurse or scrub nurse or 2.) a nurse midwife with a specialty in holistic nursing and women's health as I'm attracted to women's issues as it relates to holistic health.  I know that these choices are so different from each other but from just my clinical experiences as well as research that I have carried out in the two areas, I feel that these two will suit my niche.  I also have a deep appreciation for fitness and wellness as I have a previous degree in exercise science and sports studies and am a personal trainer so I am still trying to put all of these together.  This all brings me to the conclusion that I still need to whittle my final goal down although I feel I am close.  I want to be in a fulfilling position and not just financially, otherwise I would have just gone on and been a PT after finishing a masters program for it after my first degree but instead I chose to go for more education to become a nurse to see if I could be more fulfilled.  I realize that I may need to be a floor nurse for quite a while but I need to find a way to get through so that my goals I've set for myself are not in vain.  So I guess what I would like to know is, where exactly do I fit to achieve this?  Is it just to do med surg for 2 years and then enter masters or is there another way?

@Dave: I already have in mind what I want to do after I pass the boards this spring and that is to gain employment at a respectable hospital. I don't want to be chained to the bedside and I am striving to use other gifts I believe will enhance my life and career within nursing as well. To do this my goal is to work for 1.5 - 2 years MAX, then get my masters in anesthesia or midwifery, although I'm not sure if I will get my choice as to which area since I'm new. I am far aware of the humanitarian aspect, as that is the reason why I switched fields and acquired another degree to become an RN. My only qualm is administration and the milieu of nursing. There happens to be quite a bit of politics and it doesn't help that it is predominantly female dominated so there are enough problems there. I guess I just have to deal with the potential attitudes as I've been a tech/nurse's aid/unit clerk and have often bore the brunt of nurse's frustrations for whatever reason. I am hoping to build a thicker skin to withstand it because after all, it has taken me alot of time and resources and I would hate for a few choice people to ruin my experience by causing me frustration. I don't want to be going to work everyday with another reason to fear the plight of my license because I can't concentrate due to the amount of hateful horizontal voilence that nurses these days are exhibiting. In spite of this, I greatly look forward to finding my niche and making a difference in the health of others because that is just one of the many things that really makes me happy.

nursing is like a crude oil, so rich that you as an individual need to find out your interest area.its all about doing what you are passionate about;thats the only way you are going to enjoy the profession.i wants you to set career goals for yourself; set a time to achieve those goal.yes there might be frustration and distraction but never mind;pursue your goals.nursing administration in a challenging and interesting aspect of nursing;and there are several management courses you can do to add value to yourself.please dont be afraid,be optimistic.i have bsc.nursing administration too.today i work with an health insurance company to practice my administrative nursing.there are several places you can work base on your career goals.if you dont mind;you can paste those goals here,i might be able to help in advising you and i believe fellow nurses here will also contribute immensely. cheers

I wish to practice in the US someone should please tell how many years it will take me to register, read, write, and pass the board exams and then start practicing. PLEASE Just put me tro.
