Recently, the telecom sector has experienced a general decline in pay. Experienced staff recently recruited were offered between 140-180

I don't see how a GT will earn 4.9m. I stand to be corrected though

Speaking from experience grin

I don't think Telecom has deteriorated to that extent unless maybe you're referring to contract staff. Besides MTN is an operator and operators are the highest paid in Telecom.

Lol, you have no idea how it has deteriorated. Graduate Trainees are not paid a dime in some firms. Some pay as low as 30,000-40,000.

That salary range I earlier quoted was for staff at MTN, people with years of experience who were recently converted from contract to full staff.

Also, operators are not necessarily the highest paid, you'll be surprised that an FSE at say Ericsson earns more than a CSE at MTN.

it was quite brain-tasking.... it is a standard aptitude test with only 17mins to answer each section. Time was the greatest enemy...the maths question covered almost every basics u can think of....fraction, sum of AP, decimal multiplication..and the likes.

The comprehension weren't so bad too...altho rather verbose, i believe anyone used to aptitude exams will find them cheap enough

The abstract section was tough for me. Its my Achilles heel, but i presume the experts did it well.

All in all. It was a rather fair exam. But the time given could have been better...cos even a genius would need more time to attempt all(except they dont expect u to answer all but want to test ur time management skills perhaps)

Hello, i was part of the recruitment process last yr but didn't get the offer. Here's what I can remember from the assessment center last yr:

The assessment center has 6 activities:

1. Group Discussion- The group discussion topic was something around: A telecoms company was about to implement a verification system and other products. The challenges with this implementation where: 1. Traditional customers may not buy into the new idea 2. Cost of hiring expatriates to implement new products 3. Struggle with corrupt government officials. We had 30 mins to discuss then put together our answers on a sheet.

Second part of the case study required a decision to be made on whether to acquire a company that started as part of the group but broke out and is now experiencing challenges due to poor administration and bear market conditions. Its major market is East Africa and it has built up a lot of debt which would be inherited by whoever acquires it.
Task: Identify the problems and solutions, make a decision after Identifying the advantages and disadvantages of each scenario.

You have to be very conscious of time here and also contribute during the discussion, try to take a responsibility in the group either as Time keeper, Scribe, Preparing the final answer sheet or maybe group leader. Respect everyone's opinion and be audible wen u talk.

2. Presentation: 10 minutes presentation on one of three topics sent a day to the assessment center. Topics for last yr: Significance of customer satisfaction on business growth, Importance of negotiation skills in closing sales, Impact of Telecommunication on economic growth.

Tips: Your name, date and topic should be on the title slide, keep to time while presenting, use a case study preferably Nigeria and related to MTN, have references for everything you mention, use more of data/facts and less of stories if possible, put a touch of yellow in your slides, plain background is always the best.Be confident in your presentation, the panel would try to prove some of your points to be wrong and test your confidence. Last yr the topics changed on each day of the assessment center so i wont advice you practicing with the ones i've listed here.

3. Panel Interview:
• Tell us about your self
• Your strengths
• Tell us of a time you showed integrity
• Tell us of a time you showed innovation
• What are MTN’s core values ----- (Very important, Pls do your research about MTN and its core values)
• How do your qualification fit the job role
• Any questions for us? (Ask a smart question oh)

4. Essay: The essay was computer based and we had about 45 mins (not sure of the time): We had three topics to choose one to write about. Topics – Benefits of team building in the work environment, Socio-psychological impacts of redundancy , can't remember the last one.

5. PSENSE: Test on Microsoft Word, Excel, Power point, Outlook. MS office 2010, practical computer simulation tests where you have a document to edit for each software and you are given instructions on what operation to perform. 25 questions for 15 mins for each of them. Outlook allows you only three clicks per questions while other software’s allow you multiple clicks. Time is very important (Note: The test on Outlook was the hardest for me. So practice using outlook well)

6. E-basket: consist of four stages and is estimated to be completed within 60 minutes, although it is not timed, time of completion is factored in deciding final score. You will be required to respond to mails and assists colleagues at work in a computer based avatar like simulated environment. Some of the mails require calculations to arrive at your answers and require you to take notes as contents of the mails will be required to make decisions later on. The other stages are personality and decision making questionnaire and making a summary of office complaints from three mails and picking out the most common complaints then composing a mail 100 – 800 words long.

Assessment center was a full day, started around 9 am and ended by 5pm on my day. They provided breakfast and lunch tho. Good luck with the assessment center, I hope this helps. (NB: Pls ignore any typographical errors in this write-up).

International Passport was compulsory for the assessment center last year. I think they also specified it as a requirement during the application. Pls do all you can to get it before your assessment center date.

It's just the same way badman924 hinted above.
Just that this time, there were no Microsoft Outlook and Power point in the PSENSE.

If you get invited for the final Interview, prepare yourself. You'll be tested mostly on your business/financial awareness.
Whatever form you are asked to fill on that day, take your time and write well. Very important as this will speak on your behalf when you are not there.

If you eventually don't get the job, as many won't.. Then hold your head up high and carry on. There are always better days ahead.

Good luck
