I'm getting more and more impressed with GRRM's prose style. Not only does he restrict POV chapter to reveal only what that POV character is experiencing or thinking, he goes further to find ingenious ways of revealing insight into the thoughts/actions of other characters that the POV is interacting with.

Case in point: Arya's POV interaction with Yoren during their flight from KL.

The black brother peeled a fresh sourleaf from the bale in the wagon and stuffed it into his mouth. “Might be I should of left you where I found you, boy. All of you. Safer in the city, seems to me.”

“I don’t care. I want to go home,” [Arya said].

“Been bringing men to the Wall for close on thirty years.” Froth shone on Yoren’s lips, like bubbles of blood. “All that time, I only lost three. Old man died of a fever, city boy got snakebit taking a shit, and one fool tried to kill me in my sleep and got a red smile for his trouble.” He drew the dirk across his throat, to show her. “Three in thirty years.” He spat out the old sourleaf. “A ship now, might have been wiser. No chance o’ finding more men on the way, but still… clever man, he’d go by ship, but me… thirty years I been taking this kingsroad.” He sheathed his dirk. “Go to sleep, boy. Hear me?”

Now if you skimmed through the chapters (like I did on the first read), you'd most likely miss that bit and end up assuming that it was just plot amor to make Yoren take the kingsroad so that Arya could end up on a ship to Braavos... whereas the truth is the blackbrother had done the journey so many times in the past - all through the wars of Robert's rebellion and the Greyjoy uprising - and never had he seen the kinds of things he was seeing now.

Local online stores? As in, based in Nigeria? Naa, none that i know of... which is why i felt shipping costs would be exorbitant. You can try amazon.com if you can afford it.

I know 2 bookshops in Port Harcourt that used to stock it though, but they won't ship. You'd have to go there yourself, or send someone: Whitney Plaza - Orazi rd, and The Atrium - Peter Odili rd.
Thnks boss. Really appreciate it smiley

I agree with your submissions on the role reversal. But who knows, if Little Finger was pulling the strings in the background as he was with Lysa Tully we might get the same outcome.

On Sansa: Yeah, at that point in the story she was just a girl whose head is filled with tales by moonlight (Florian and Joquil) and as such could be easily manipulated. But later events show that even a clueless girl can become a formidable player in the Game of Thrones.

PS: I like your musings by the way, please keep it up.

is she currently formidable or am I missing something?

At that point, Catelyn was a Stark not a Tully and has not been seen in the Riverlands for more than 15 years so it is easy to see why her Tully blood won't carry much weight at that period (contrast it with how she is viewed among the Northmen). Even the Blackfish had more authority than her in the Riverlands at that point in time. It was a diplomatic tightrope she had to walk.

Of course, the show only glossed over Drogo's wounds like it was a trifling matter. But a small infection when there is no antibiotics is no small matter, I tell ya.

Yeah, Ned questioned his honour at the end. He even asked himself if he wouldn't do the same thing Cersei did if it was the lives of his own children that were in danger.

1. I won't say she begged though diplomacy is seen that way Mind you the river lands owe Allegiance to the North... its the olds man's character that not been involved that make people entreat him Even Tywin sent him strong deals

2. Drogo's wound wasn't properly treated intentionally I must add

3. As for Ned Cerci's words come to mind ... When you play the game of thrones....

No middle grounds

my thinking is?
what is preventing the white Walker from just going around the wall ?
I remember one side of the wall ends at the oceans they could just go there and sail around and voila them Don enter westeros.

I have just seen the latest episode of the TV series.
who ever came up with this r + L=j stuff deserve some kind of award.
I never supported it cause I liked the idea that ned stark isn't just some honor craze lord but that appears to be true.
maybe G. R. R. M will change the reveal for reader.
we still don't if rheagar and lyanna were lovers or the attraction was one sided.

No, the Riverlands does not hold allegiance to the North. They hold it to the Tullys. And the Freys more grudgingly so. Remember, it's "The king in the North" not The king in the Riverlands. AT that point in the story, the Riverlands were only along with the fight because the Tullys were siding the Starks. Allegiances were being forged and the steel was still hot at the time.

She is gearing up to be. He who has the heir to the Vale in his pocket has the Vale. Harry the Heir or young sweetRobin Arryn will soon be in Sansa's pocket they just don't know it yet.

Ehh, no they don't.

And no, the bit with Drogo's wound not intentional either. Mirri maz Duur treated the wound with a pale green paste and red ointment that would burn and heal and leave a big scar; Drogo tore it off cos he misliked the pain and had his own healers make new "less painful" option. It was the "less painful" option that caused the gangrene... along with his drinking and poor diet.

(AGOT: pg 614/753)
When she was done she painted the skin with red ointment, covered it with more leaves, and bound the breast in a ragged piece of lambskin. “You must say the prayers I give you and keep the lambskin in place for ten days and ten nights,” she said. “There will be fever, and itching, and a great scar when the healing is done.... Drink neither wine nor the milk of the poppy,” she cautioned him. “Pain you will have, but you must keep your body strong to fight the poison spirits.”

“I am khal,” Drogo said. “I spit on pain and drink what I like. Cohollo, bring my vest.” The older man hastened off..

(AGOT: pg 640/753)
The khal did not react. His eyes were fixed on distant brown hills, the reins loose in his hands. Beneath his painted vest, a plaster of fig leaves and caked blue mud covered the wound on his breast. The herbwomen had made it for him. Mirri Maz Duur’s poultice had itched and burned, and he had torn it off six days ago, cursing her for a maegi. The mud plaster was more soothing, and the herbwomen made him poppy wine as well. He’d been drinking it heavily these past three days; when it was not poppy wine, it was fermented mare’s milk or pepper beer.

Yet he scarcely touched his food, and he thrashed and groaned in the night.

The humiliation of Grandmaester Pycelle... artfully and masterfully executed by Tyrion.
But it seems to me that by this point the power had started to get into Tyrion's head. He is doing a good job as Hand in his father's stead, but now he's enjoying the position so much he's almost forgetting that it is temporary... or is he actually working towards making his position permanent? Why else completely humiliate and eliminate Pycelle, his father's most loyal crony in the Small Council?

- - - -

Honorable mention of little 3-year-old "Weasel" that we last read of on pg 256...

And Arya thought, Run, Weasel, run as far as you can, run and hide and never come back.

There are scores of tragic stories between the pages of the ASOIAF series, but i personally find that of Weasel the saddest. Most people who've read the books don't even remember her - 2 going on 3, no real name and barely a description beyond small with matted hair.

Jon Snow is poised to end Ygritte's life at the Skirling Pass and GRRM writes thus:
He raised Longclaw over his head, both hands tight around the grip. One cut, with all my weight behind it. He could give her a quick clean death, at least. He was his father’s son. Wasn’t he? Wasn’t he?

Some much happening, some much still to happen...

Daenerys, 14 years old and acting it. Funny how i got the show's version mixed up in my head and kept expecting her dragons to be "dragon-napped". However i find it odd that inspite of all Daenerys has been through, she still retains her expectation of "entitlement" - people should do her favors simply cos she is Blood of the dragon. Compared to Jon Snow's very obvious growth/development in character, Daenerys seems stagnant.

Tyrion, i'd already mentioned how it seemed like the power was getting to his head; his last chapter now confirms it. His bitterness at the way he is discarded is truly justified, but it is the power he's grown used to having that he seems to miss more. What interests me though is how he immediately assumes it was Cersei that ordered Ser Mandon Moore to kill him...

No Cersei POV chapters yet, but her interactions with Sansa intrigue me. She seems to be completely aware of what she is and what people truly think of her, and yet is totally unfazed by it. In my opinion she is the most "Lannister-like" of all her siblings; she is prepared to do whatever needs to be done to secure her and her children's positions.

Catelyn Stark, growing more and more bitter, snapping at both friend and foe. Perhaps i should feel sorry for her, but somehow i don't.

Qhorin Halfhand. He's truly worth an honorable mention.

And Josemyn Peckledon, the 14-year-old squire who killed 2 knights, wounded a 3rd, and captured 2 more. I'm tempted to say great things could be in store for young Josemyn, but this is GRRM... smiley

Re-reading the series... Book 1: Game of Thrones.

... and so it comes to me that Ned Stark is quite an idiot and incredibly naive. Your wife kidnaps the son of the current most-powerful Lord in the land, and you boldly declare that she did so on your orders, then you quarrel with your king, loudly denouncing him as a coward and resign as his second-in-command, only for you to go sauntering around Kings Landing that same night with only 3 guards... for real?! I mean, are you insane or just plain stupid??

This is like leaving your queen idle halfway across the chessboard, attacking with just one pawn and leaving your king completely exposed... and then hoping that your opponent will be honorable enough to not exploit your weakness.

Do you know any bookshop where I can get the complete boxset?

I already have the e-book in my e-library . . . but GOT is a novel that is worth keeping in my library.

The Liddle.

Bran saw the orange glow of fire farther back and realized they were not alone. “Come in and warm yourselves,” a man’s voice called out. “There’s stone enough to keep the rain off all our heads..."

The Liddle took out a knife and whittled at a stick. “When there was a Stark in Winterfell, a maiden girl could walk the kingsroad in her name-day gown and still go unmolested, and travelers could find fire, bread, and salt at many an inn and holdfast. But the nights are colder now, and doors are closed. There’s squids in the wolfswood, and flayed men ride the kingsroad asking after strangers.... [Flayed men,] the Bastard’s boys, aye. He was dead, but now he’s not. And paying good silver for wolfskins, a man hears, and maybe gold for word of certain other walking dead.” He looked at Bran when he said that, and at Summer stretched out beside him. “As to that Wall,” the man went on, “it’s not a place that I’d be going. The Old Bear took the Watch into the haunted woods, and all that come back was his ravens, with hardly a message between them. Dark wings, dark words, me mother used to say, but when the birds fly silent, seems to me that’s even darker.” He poked at the fire with his stick. “It was different when there was a Stark in Winterfell. But the old wolf’s dead and young one’s gone south to play the game of thrones, and all that’s left us is the ghosts...”

When they woke the next morning, the fire had gone out and the Liddle was gone, but he’d left a sausage for them, and a dozen oatcakes folded up neatly in a green and white cloth. Some of the cakes had pinenuts baked in them and some had blackberries. Bran ate one of each... One day there would be Starks in Winterfell again, he told himself, and then he’d send for the Liddles and pay them back a hundredfold for every nut and berry.

Is the Liddle really the Liddle? And if he was, how would he be knowing about so much on both sides of the Wall?

I think he's a Lidde, with the sigil and all. What he meant was that, Sam forgot to write any messages before releasing the ravens to Castle Black.

He didn't really bear the sigil, just the pinecone cloak clasp. Still doesn't explain how he knew that the Old Bear had taken his crows into the Haunted Forest, or for that matter how he knew that the ravens came back with no messages when none of the main northern houses knew.

Well.... i've read further on in the book, and around pg408 Tyrion witnesses Pycelle reporting on a crowmail from Bowen Marsh detailing same things the Liddle had mentioned to Bran. Bowen had mass-written the same letter to all the warring kings (which Tywin didn't find amusing at all), and probably to the main houses too (I'm guessing that here). So maybe, maybe, the Liddle did have a source for the news... but it's really quite a long stretch.

But i still have questions popping up... For instance, why would the Liddle of House Liddle be traipsing around alone in such horrible weather with a bag full of confectionery? cheesy As for if he'll be someone important in future, i really couldn't say - it's easier to predict the weather than to predict GRRM - I'm just saying he doesn't add up.

I am piling all yhe episodes to be watcjed back to back. Ive left the GOT thread for now so no spoilers though braniacx tries to tempt me. Lol.

When you finish A song of ice and fire try the top 25 fantasy books ever written.

I've read the name of the wind and wise mans fear.

Then I read this story of nine fingers 3 books. Can't remember the name. It was readable but not fantastic.

Strictly soft copy. The era of hard copy is over. Once I read about the book it's search and download straight. Hard copies are prone to loss and wear and tear. Also might be stolen.

My godfather and shogun were stolen twice and the third copy of shogun got damaged. Now I have soft copies.

Would finish the gentlemen bastards then over to mistborn.

Ps if you haven't read shogun once you finish asoiaf get it next. It practically my favourite book on the planet.

Was still in my early teens when i heard about Shogun, but I've never gotten around to it. Truth is, late 20's/early 30's is a very hectic time for any young man... But I've paid my dues (wink!), time to dive back into my first love - literary fiction. I'll add Shogun to my reading bucket-list.
