What you are saying above is not the same thing. There is a difference between imminent defeat and capture and retreat. During a battle or war, if a Soldier dicorvers that the situation cannot be helped any more, the Soldier has a duty to escape since the Soldier staying back to die is only to benefit of his enemy.

Ojukwu had fought for 3 years and could no longer hold out. If Ojukwu had stayed back to surrender, he would have either been shot or put on trial for high treason and shot by firing squad. Either way, he was a dead man. So it makes no sense for Ojukwu to stay back to be killed for the benefit of Gowon.
