Why Are We Charged By Our Network Providers For Credit Transfers?? by Amicable24: 2:30pm On Oct 02, 2017
Please, can anyone explain why our network providers (MTN, Etisalat, now 9mobile, which I use and I'm sure of) charge us for a credit transfer from one line to the other since the transfer is done via same network provider?

I noticed there's a percentage deducted for for every credit I transfer to others using my Mtn and 9mobile lines. I don't know if same goes for other network providers like Airtel and Glo. It used to be free but now, we are charged for that.

Any reasonable explanation for that please?

It's called service fee. Airtel started long before other networks join them. So for using share credit service, you're charged same way they charge you for using their Value Added Service.

Well it's fair enough because they're rendering the service. To avoid being charged on share credit, you can send the recharge pin in form of SMS or via WhatsApp chat.
We're not charged above the normal rate for SMS except you're experiencing such. The SMS rate is N4 across all networks.

What many of us fail to realize is that it is not these network providers that owns that service, it is a third-party service, if we are not charged where will that third-party get their share.

The fee they charge me is more than the normal SMS rate of 4 Naira. Etisalat/9mobile's own is even worse because they charge a percentage of whatever amount you're sending

It used to be free for a long time before now.. Where were they funded then?
