grin grin. Especially during the teen ages... most girls are seriously affected by this. Good thing you're past that state now.

Lol. The things we read actually influence us whether we like it or not. Although I'm more realistic now but I'm still a sucker for happy endings. My lil sis on the other hand doesn't even want to hear anything romance let alone Harlequin, lil wonder why she's yet to have a bf when most of her friends are into relationships... I'm kinda happy about that sha, I wouldn't want her getting her hopes high, only for her to jam one Yoruba bobo. angry angry

I neither read nor see romance. I hate fairy tales. You will get hurt if you try bringing the memories into a real-life relationship.

Romantic novels are great fallacies. When i read them, i just close my mind to unrealistic imaginations. Believing those sweet but unrealistic perfections will make someone start telling her boyfriend "you're not even romantic" grin
To make things worst, Korean dramas have succeeded in turning some girls to something else.
Anyway, I've guided my heart from the "Romantic Dreamland" grin

I don't believe so sha.

A lot of our mothers and aunts grew up reading Mills and boons.

These days, asides romance novels, we have Telemundo and romance movies.

It doesn't distort our view of reality. It only put us in this "wishful thinking" state. But does it mean we don't know that what we read and watch is just fiction?

We do, and it doesn't mean we have this exaggerated expectations from love or men after reading or watching them.
That it doesn't apply to you doesn't mean it doesn't apply to others. ScotFree already stated that he's not claiming the write-up to be 100% accurate. It might not be true of all girls (it isn't, infact). But it is true of some, and they aren't few. I have many as friends. The guy is right to a certain extent.

There's a phenomenon known as Suspension of Disbelief. When you are watching a great movie or reading a great book, you are able to "suspend your disbelief", in that, even though you "know" the events of the film or book are not actually happening, you can genuinely believe that they are. You enter fully into the fabricated world and live and breathe it. It may have a profound effect on you. For some, it lasts only for the duration. For others, it might influence the course of the rest of their lives. Yet it's all made up. It happens.

If you've read the book, Simulacra and Simulation by French philosopher Jean Baudrillard, you would have heard of the concept of HYPERREALITY. Baudrillard described hyperreality as "more real than real" - a greater reality than the one we currently inhabit, and also one where we've lost touch with reality, and it no longer exists.

Take fashion models as an example. They are impossibly beautiful and their images are everywhere - yes "impossibly" beautiful, because the images of the models are invariably airbrushed and digitally enhanced. Moreover, the make-up is perfect, the lighting is perfect, the setting is perfect, the designer clothes are perfect. They're "more real than real". Reality could never rival this simulated perfection, yet you have certain women using it as a gold standard for gauging their beauty. Yet this gold standard is pure fiction. They are trying to measure reality according to unreal standards.

You are a wise man bro (sorry if assumed gender is wrong). That's why i inserted that disclaimer...but she still didn't get it.. it isn't accurate for all girls.

Lol. You're right, it's a bro (ZandhaZaraZ. Remember now?).

Yeah, there's NEVER a one-size-fits-all concept. There'll always be exceptions to a rule or an idea, but that doesn't invalidate it.

You know, I agree with this. At a point when I was reading Harry Potter, I started living in a fantasy world thinking my family members were "muggles" and I was a witch or something and my letter from "Hogwarts" would arrive. Silly me.

LMAO. Some fictional works can hold one spell-bound. I can relate. My NARUTO fantasies also used to spill into my reality. grin
