They work harder than doctors abroad, and are more exposed to risks . Worse still, a doctors hazard allowance monthly is 5k compared to a Nigerian lecturer's hazard allowance which is 30k monthly.

In the US a doctor is not expected to work more than 80hours a week, in Nigeria, 100hrs in child's play..

Simple scenario...I trained in the US and came back in 2007. I didn't stay up to a year and left. I was invited back home in January 2017 to help develop my specialty. On Wednesday I went to the consulting room I used in 2007 and there has been no single change; no improvement in infrastructure in 10 years.

The conditions of service are appalling. Most doctors can't even afford a decent vacation, work multiple jobs to stay afloat. Terribly designed and humid wards. No seperate ward for TB patients, I usually see DM patients and TB patients right next to each other. Inadequate diagnostic equipment. Inadequate protective equipment.

I have received tons of request from not just interns and residents to help them get out of here but also consultants as well and I have overseen the exit of 11 bright doctors.

The Nigerian doctor is a hero, risking his life every day to function in a dysfunctional system. I don't blame him or her. The Government has not done enough for the health sector.

One major problem of Nigerians is that we choose to do nothing. Next election, same old recycled politicians, same faces, and we still carry ourselves to the ballot boxes to cast our votes. We do this hoping that this time, it will be better, this time the person will effect change. We do this over and over again and it failed us over and over again. A government that champagned to ban government officials seeking medical care abroad, yet the leader in our very own eyes, went to the UK to treat an ear infection. Nigerians could have carried a banner when he was on his way or during his return at the airport, with message on the banner stating "hypocrisy" "lies" and "deciet". But we do nothing. And they know we'll do nothing which is why they always get away with their failed promises.

The youths are the hard hit. Cause they come to a point in their life when they realise that all the school runs and candle burning was for nothing. We can't support our aging parents who have given so much to raise us, because their are no jobs for us. The hopelessness makes the youth resort to a life of crime as their is nothing else to do to make ends meet. I call on every Nigerian youth who wants a better future for their kids to join NYRP - NIGERIAN YOUTH POLITICAL REVOLUTION MOVEMENT. Lets get our young vibrant minds into Nigerian Politics and choose leaders who have Nigeria at heart. Enough of old recycled politicians who have proved that they have nothing to offer. I know 5 nurses working at Portharcourt Teaching hospital that are presently making arrangement to port out of this country. One told me she almost wept when her class mate in school told her what she earns as a nurse in Canada. I pity any health worker or student planning to practice here. Dublin is better in pay than Jordan. I have a cousin that graduated from Economics Unizik, found herself in the USA ,went back to school there and did nursing. She is fully made now and puts smiles on her family's face.Let your sister start making plans in her final year.This issue of porting may encourage our herbalists to develop the original African medicine. The government need to increase fees so that they can milk them before they migrate. That's the best thing here, charge higher school fees for medical students, then use the revenue to pay expatriates while the number of Nigerian trained doctors will reduce due to lack of funds and they can go to hell if they like. They are too greedy and lack empathy

These guys get cheap as fvck education in Naija, dump the helpless masses and go for higher paying rates outside the country. Even if we had equipment, many of them would still take the PLAB or whatever exam.

For abroad Nigerian doctors are nurses . Only identification of medical instruments alone will fail them , because most of them will be seeing some instruments for the first. I don't even like Nigerian doctors at all, you will see in them that they went for the career because of money not because of passion to save life.

I have no qualms with jumping ship due to abysmal pay. However, I'm tired of the numerous dishonest stories on Twitter about why they're quitting because of equipment.

They are mainly leaving because there's an international demand for those in their profession and the pay is good.

You are wrong. Atleast in the US and UK, there is no additional training for doctors trained in Nigeria. If you're good enough you pass their hard exams, you're good enough for their system. Cheers

Are you a doctor? Don't let her comment bother you. I could have said the same thing she said, had I been as myopic. But I've seen the issue from both sides of the prism, so I know her generalization is lame! Some people tend to forget that the world is bigger than their experiences.
