rather it is a javascript tool ( more like an object since it has properties and methods) used to communicate with server side or data repository outside the browser. Ajax is both asynchronous and Asynchronous but used asynchronously most of the time to avoid browser blocking of other resources of the webpage while processing javascript. Also ajax is not XML based only as you can used it with other data format like JSON, textfile, database.
