This applies not only to the Nigerian employment market. A lot of graduates turn out from school and wonder why they can't get good jobs or just any job at all... without asking themselves what skills they have at first. A lot even travel out and expect to get a decent job with just their degrees.. Time has changed... even if you had a B. A. in yoruba or Igbo, you still need practical skill's proof to show you can be a teacher or something else. You need something to show yourself approved simply put.

I'm sure you don't fully understand what the OP is passing across. The first class is just an advantage. An advantage to get you the prospective employers' audience and you WILL be required to show yourself approved afterwards. Who is a first class graduate without communication skills? Who is a first class graduate that cannot propose a game changing idea to a challenging business scenario? Who is a first class graduate that cannot use excel or powerBI to make graphic presentations? Jobs are not about reading, solving mathematics or cramming. They are about doing things to contribute to the successes of companies and making them stay ahead of their competition... So the advantage (first class degree) is NEVER enough. .. forget how e take happen!

I think what is really important here is 'begging for a job" whatever class you may fall because psychologically you are also showing that you are cheap

Well what do you expect us to do after struggling hard to achieve 1st class?

Yea it is important to learn a skill
and be more relevant in the job market but this kind of posts aren't motivating fresher's,it's killing their zeal towards academic success.

I have heard of first class graduates that got automatic employment either in the school itself or outside of it.With this post of yours, you are only making inexperienced fresher's believe that they can actually succeed in life without good grades. This isn't right.

I'm not saying good grades determine employability. But whatever worth doing,is worth doing well.

2)Withhold learning a trade and focus maintaining a first class. I am currently in first class.

you better focus on that pharmacy u are studying, pharmacy is one of the few lucrative courses we have in Nigeria, they are in hot demand in the pharmaceutical industry. Plus they have the opportunity of opening a pharmacy shop. What most of them do is to work for reputable pharmaceutical coys as representative, gather enough capital then open their own pharmacy shop. I hardly see any pharmacist that is poor.

I can understand that the OP is trying encourage First class graduates to acquire more skills, etc. However, I would like to disagree with his statement that the number of First Class graduates have now exceeded that of Second Class Uppers. As a First Class graduate, he should know that such statements cannot be made without facts. It is quite unfortunate that many graduates, first class inclusive, can't find jobs these days. Nevertheless, it would be wrong to belittle the achievement of a First Class graduate just because of temporary unemployment. They faced challenges just like others in school and came out tops. If given the chance of employment, there is a strong possibility that their contributions might surpass that of others. First Class graduates are unique people. I wish I was one.
hahahahaha

This is why i advise students to focus on acquiring knowledge and not just getting a first class. Knowledge is what stands you out. It is an entirely different thing from just carrying a first class degree certificate. Lecturers need to shift focus from examination to imparting knowledge.
The issue is that students focus on how to pass exams alone and they employ different strategies to just pass their exams and once exam is done and dusted, they forget everything.
Lecturers encourage this by giving out materials which the students are expected to reproduce in exam and woe betide a student who provides the same information from a different soure. So, students cram the lecture materials and just pour them without really understanding the course. That is the problem! Some of these first class graduates know next to nothing because of the way they were taught.

I write to you this epistle as a form of encouragement and admonishment. I know how you felt when you finally held your certificate and saw your CGPA. It was the same way I felt too. I wish we all got these CGPAs during the time of our fathers; maybe we would have been richer than all our peers right now, flying so high with lots of attention and help that would be gracing our way.

But I am sorry to inform you that this is 2017, and Nigeria is in a state of recession. What’s your grade once again, is it up to 5.0?

Current report shows that she just got a job, but was the 2 years wait worth it?

Any value proposition in the above?

Do you know that a fellow First class graduate with a perfect CGPA got only 100,000 Naira after much backlash from people as his gift, and right now, nobody talks about him again?

You remember the winner of Big Brother Nigeria; he got 25 million as his own gift. Don’t bother arguing about it. They said he helped the sponsors get their money back, that was why they fed him for 3 months, and also gave him 25 million with sponsorship deals.

I know you read what I wrote up there in a haste, but I will break it down for you again.

He helped the “sponsors get their money back” with his entertainment skills, that was why he was paid such an amount. Do you still understand?

In a corporate term, he “delivered real value”, so he got paid for the value delivered.

Dear First Class Graduate, aside from your certificate, what other value can you give out to an employer? Are you even employable?

It took me years of being on the street to know all these, and I am about to tell you this now.

This is 2017, and you should know now that;

No employer cares about your CGPA as long as it can’t help his company generate revenue, it is worthless to him.

Only a few multinationals and Banks care to attach a CGPA as a requirement for job applications. I guess they have become wiser that CGPAs doesn’t equate job delivery.

Companies are now looking for people with the skills to deliver, not those with First class.

Now that you know all these now, would you still beg someone to hire you just because you have a first class?

It might also interest you to know that the number of First class graduates now, has even exceeded that of Second class upper graduates. Employers are now beginning to see that University certificates are now so unreliable.

Here are some few tips for you my Fellow First Class Graduate.

Never beg for a job again, prove why you should have it.

Instead of crying over your first class, hit the streets and get going with life.

Look for cheap certifications in a field with high employment chances (especially ICT), and acquire some skills.

Know that your First class is a plus and not a requirement.

I learned the hard way and I hope you can make use of it well. When next you have the urge to hit the social media and beg for a job because of your first class, just remember that this is Nigeria, and we are in 2017 and not 1945. This is because nobody would offer you a job because of your grade. Not even the school you finished! I learned the hard way, and you can read my own story

Her Alma Mata even declined to give her a job.

Don't forget to subscribe.

Your submission is quite true. I have learned the hard way too. Creating value through ideas should be the aim of everyone. It takes humility to acquire skill that is needed to create value and make money, but that is the sure way to success.

May I begin to say that school does not make the best out of someone, only God make the best out of someone. I do say schooling Is also where one begin to search God's plans and purpose for his/her life, school is not meant for academic packs alone.
A life without a vision is like a torch without a battery. school is also a place where you know your vision and purpose of God for LIFE, and you pursue it.
I do tell myself and some of my colleague that I can't graduate and beg for JOB, GOD has a plan for me...

Almost automatically first class grads get shortlisted for job test. The problem is, some of these FCs flunk the test, but they will not talk about that part.

The best your grade gets you is shortlisting for job tests. Your FC wont earn you automatic job.

Out of the 13 first class from my class, 12 sat the McKinsey PST. Guess what ? Only 2 passed and just 1 got the job.

I must admit, one of the major hurdles I had to cross during my own job search was the Aptitude Test. This is because school never really prepared us for these tests you learn it, through practice and hard work.

That’s one part, we shouldn’t even get started with interviewing skills, which is another thing entirely. And may pose a major challenge to the guy that led a triangular lifestyle with little to no social skills.

Nna mehn, School dikwa risky. Me I sha like the joy I get from looking at my cert and how it may come in handy for postgrad studies.

Cheers !

Please, try to finish with a first-class, it would still help your ministry if you are considering postgrad studies(to get scholarship) outside 9ja.

Secondly, it makes for a good ice-breaker in an interview. Learn your fashion designing during holidays and if you can multitask , you are god to start now.

Any First Class grad that is worth the certificate should not struggle for job.

First Class will not earn you automatic job. If you cannot pass job test, your FC wont help you. The likes of Odufuwa should tell us what they have done with their test invites.

Your first paragraph is just it. However, there are SOME First Class nowadays that don't worth the salt. They think their class of degree will put food on their table not their 'inherent value'. It is the bitter truth.

anyone capable of getting a first in the chaos that is the nigerian public tertiary education should be able to navigate the recruitment process with ease.

step one - go to cms or yaba and buy gre /gmat books. sit down with them for two weeks. your only challenge then is if they give you cbt. cbts are difficult at first because you have to train yourself to take them. in which case download gre /gmat test prep software, install it and practise with it.

once you've done this any test will be a breeze. it is not rocket science

as for interviews, what is google for? its mostly the same format for entry level - tell me about yourself etc. ensure you read up on the company, ensure you have the long speech about why you are a good fit for the company, ensure you have an idea of their current projects etal. and of course, get a good suit.

end of.it is not rocket science.

if you make a first/2.1, you have a straight ticket to the good easy jobs. DO NOT WASTE IT.

if you make 2.2 or 3rd, your journey to the good job will be longer and harder

Thank you very much. Funny how some people think the first class graduate will make A grades in school and come out to struggle with assessment tests that also require academic proficiency and practice to excel. I still maintain that first class graduates (home and abroad) are a unique set of people and should never be belittled because of global issue of unemployment.

PS: No institution of learning (home and abroad) will award a first class degree to an average student. If first class was that easy, many would have gotten it.
