Manchester United, Chelsea, Man City, Tottenham and Liverpool are all confident of reaching the last-16 of the competition following a strong opening from each Premier League side so far.

Some teams have had it easier than others up to this point, but the knockout stages will be the real rest of their mettle as Europe's best sides focus their attentions on the ultimate prize in European club football.

When and where is the draw?

The draw will take place in Nyon, Switzerland on December 11. The ceremony is scheduled to start at 11am GMT.

Key points

a. There will be two seeding pots: one of the group winners, and the other of runners-up.

b. No team can play a club from their group or from their own association - that means Premier League clubs avoid each other until the quarter-final stages, should any of them get that far.

c. The seeded group winners will be the away team in the first legs on 13-14 and 20-21 February, and have home advantage in the second legs on 6-7 and 13-14 March.

Jose Mourinho’s side won their group comfortably, but unfortunately for the Red Devils that’s no guarantee of an easy ride in the next phase. Real Madrid are clearly the team to avoid, while Bayern Munich and Juventus would be very tricky.

Chelsea…

Potential opponents: Paris St-Germain, Barcelona or Besiktas. Chelsea were the one English side who failed to top their group. They finished behind Roma, but did manage to squeeze out Atletico Madrid. PSG will be one to avoid, with the French champions having knocked them out at the Round of 16 stage on their last two appearances in the competition. Obviously Barcelona would be a nightmare. So fingers crossed for Besiktas!

Liverpool…

Potential opponents: Basel, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Shakhtar Donetsk, Porto or Real Madrid. Liverpool had perhaps the most trouble qualifying, yet ultimately finished top of their group. Jurgen Klopp will be wanting to avoid Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Juventus.

Man City…

Potential opponents: Basel, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Sevilla, Porto or Real Madrid. No team will want to play Manchester City, particularly after their 2-1 win over Manchester United at the weekend. Pep Guardiola’s team currently look unstoppable.

Tottenham…

Potential opponents: Basel, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Shakhtar Donetsk or Porto. Unlike the other group winners from the Premier League, Real Madrid are not an option for Tottenham. That’s because they emerged from the same group, with Spurs even humiliating the reigning champions at Wembley. On that basis, Tottenham will feel confident whoever they play.

The 2018 final is due to be played at the Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kiev. An impressive arena that seats 70,000 and hosted the final of Euro 2012.

The odds are bound to change depending on what happens this morning, but currently PSG are the favourites among the bookmakers.

Considering they’ve never won the tournament, it seems the signings of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe have swayed the bookies in their favour.

Second favourites are Man City – another team who have never won the competition.

Real Madrid – the winners in 2016 and 2017 – are third. Of the Premier League teams, Liverpool are the least fancied.

Alan Shearer has revealed the two Premier League sides he thinks can go furthest in the competition – Manchester United and Man City.

‘We [the Premier League] once again have teams and — more importantly — coaches who can put us back on top again,’ he told The Sunn.

‘The two who have the best chance of doing that are Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, who both have two Champions League titles. ‘For me, Pep’s City look our best bet. To win this trophy you need something a bit special.’

Uefa’s deputy general secretary, Giorgio Marchetti, is introduced. He’s going to be in charge of the actual draw, and he also sends best wishes from the absent Ceferin: “He wishes the best of luck to the teams that have reached this stage of the competition.”
