I was caught up in the middle of the whole "scarcity" thing last night, around 12a.m. Finally found one station that had petrol, but refused to sell. You should have seen the fuel attendants gesticulating, prancing around like spoiled little princesses, just because we were begging them to sell. Had to pay 1k, just to get to buy.

it's funny how their shakara always starts when there is fuel scarcity, that is when you will know the true nature of a petrol attendant.

Enter the Electric Vehicle.



Just like Solar Panels, Electric vehicles are becoming cheaper and cheaper with increased range and charging times. It won't be long before the model 3 comes out, priced at just about $35,000.


We already have great competitors in the E.V industry like the Chevy Bolt, capable of giving you 250 miles on a single charge. That is 482Km on a single charge which is very impressive. The more impressive part is that the Bolt starts under $30,000.


Like the I.C.E industry, the E.V industry will soon be filled up with used affordable cars for sale, which would bring prices of used versions of the Model S and the bolt further down to below $25,000 and $20,000 respectively.

At these prices, in a year or two, there would be no need for Nigerians to keep buying I.C.Es unless of course charging would be a problem for that.


Now people might ask, How do you Charge E.Vs in Nigeria Where is the Light

Well, most people in Nigeria already have Gen sets in their houses, so to charge you simply would turn on your Gen like you normally do and plug in your car to the wall, like you would plug in your phone. That is obviously for times when mains power is unavailable.

I do not foresee Electric charge stations being abundant in Nigeria any time soon, like how we have a prevalence of petrol stations right now though, so getting a quick charge for your electric vehicle might be a tad difficult. Still, as long as you can get power at home, then you can simply plug in your car to charge.

If you want to do away with petrol and deisel entirely, then you could purchase a 1kw solar setup to keep your car batteries charged. This is equivalent to taking all the money you use to buy petrol each month for a year and investing it in a solar setup that could potentially charge your vehicle for 20 years.

More than sure. In my home country, the population is under 10 million. The total generating capacity of all power plants is around 8500 MW. That means that we generate, on average, 850W per citizen. here, power cuts are not longer than 10-20 minutes PER YEAR, and only for regular maintenance works. So basically, we have 24/7/365 power supply.

Nigeria has a much larger population. let's say, it's around 180 million. The highest recorded production in recent years was at something between 4500 and 5000 MW, meaning that Nigeria generates 27W per citizen. That is well over 31 times less. So, in fact, my initial rough estimation was overoptimistic. Nigeria serves only around 3% of all power needs.

That means that Nigeria has to increase the PRODUCTION of electric energy over 30 times to reach that level. The entirely different story is how many households have access to what was known as NEPA before. Many do not have it, so even building so many new power plants would not be enough.

Nigeria has to build plants, 30 time more plants in fact, but to also build almost from scratch the power distribution network, to connect even the most distant small village to it, and to re-build existing systems which are a big mess.

Too many naysayers, so many doubters that EVs will work in this country....cmon guys you all wanna depend on dinosaurs? We need to think its possible, sure, the epileptic power situation, the irony of using gasoline to power your gen so that you can charge your EV, costly setup costs of solar and non existence of wind energy infrastructure, we still have a long way to go and we will get there.

OP stop deceiving people. Electric cars are not economically feasible compared to I.C.E cars.
The cost of those electric cars you gave comes with subsidies from the Western governments. Besides the cost of producing the batteries for electric cars is rising and will continue to rise if we all switched to electric cars. Why is that?? Simply because the elements (Lithium, cobalt and some other elements) used in making them are rare.

Cost of lithium per tonne: $7000
Cost of cobalt per tonne $66,000

Cobalt was $40,000 as at February 2017. These costs will keep rising if we all switched to electric cars. That's the reason why the Chinese govt had to reduce its subsidy on electric cars.
Also if we all plugged our cars to charge overnight, how will we handle the resulting overload?

And finally electric cars are not really green. Check out pictures of lithium mines...not a sight to behold. Besides dead batteries would be a major source of pollution to the environment.

| 5 Reasons Electric Cars Won’t Sell Well In Nigeria |

There are certain reasons why a typical Nigerian won’t fancy electric vehicles. They are:

1. The Range Anxiety:
For electric cars, you don’t just walk into your cars to drive; you need to do some calculations to know where and where you can go with the charges. After facing calculation wahala in school, you’ll still have to do some calculations before you leave your house…that’s weird.
A typical Nigerian man is not ready to be doing this. It will be a turn-off.

2. No sharp sharp refill:
If you drive the conventional combustion engine and you’re running low on fuel, you just enter any gas station closeby and fill up. This won’t take much time (Except you dey queue for NNPC to buy cheaper).

The case is totally different for EVs. It takes time to charge. It takes up to 4-6 hours or more to get them fully charged. 15 minutes of charging will just add few miles to the energy bank. That’s sad.

3. Charging the EVs:
This will be a very big problem for Nigerians. All EVs need power to charge them and Nigeria as a country is already facing power issues.
Introducing electric vehicles will bring in more problems. EVs are not suitable for places having power shortage; Nigeria is not an exception.

4. They are relatively expensive:
This one na money matter. Take out your time to check the prices of these EVs’ and you’ll see that they are on the high side. The more affordable ones fall under $30,000 to $40,000 price range, while the luxury models creep into $80,000 and above.
In Naira, we are talking of N10 million. An average Nigerian can’t afford this just to buy a car.

5. Maintenance issues:
Electric cars won’t give much headache like their combustion engine counterparts; they don’t need engine oil, just rotate your tires.
The big question now is: what will you do when an issue arises?
It might be difficult to take it for repairs. There are not many experts who would be able to handle them.
