Amasa Firdaus, the Nigerian Law School graduate has explained why she refused to remove her hijab, an issue which earned her refusal to be called to the bar last Friday and has become object of debate on the social media.

Speaking over the incident which took place at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, on Friday to The Cable newspaper, Firdaus said she wore the hijab to challenge the status quo.

She also said others who have given in to the order to remove their hijabs in the past did nothing to change the situation.

She added, “They just call it convention that the British gave to us and we have to stick to it. I used them. They complained (during) my first (law) dinner. That is how they do on the campus. You don’t wear hijab for dinner, but I did. I chose Abuja because I knew they were a little lenient.

“People have been removing their hijab over the years. What have those people who have removed it done?”

Amasa who was refused entry into the hall for insisting on wear the wig on top of her hijab also told PREMIUM TIMES her action was aimed at getting approval of Hijab so that every person coming behind her will be able to use it for the call to bar

“There is nothing like that (laws preventing the use of Hijab),” she told PREMIUM TIMES. “When you ask them too, they tell you it is convention; that that is how it is done and it has to remain like that.”

She also said she was aware of the likely consequences of her decision: “I knew that was what was going to happen,”

“My demand is that Hijab should be approved,” she affirmed.

I think she's saying that there is no law specifically proscribing the use of hijab, except that it is merely a convention. I'm not a lawyer, but I doubt one really needs to challenge a convention in court.

BTW, the abusive comments wasn't necessary.

There is also no law mandating she becomes a lawyer as well

She should put her limited legal skills to test and challenge the long held dress code.

Note: her hijab ban is not limited to her graduation ceremony alone as if she decides to practice law, she will need to adhere to this same dress code.

It's simple called rule of law, every country have their status quo why contest it when you can't win it, believe me you wasted yrs to earn that and you decided to dump it just because of what, if your parent had to sell properties and do labours in sending you to school would you do the same

She should not bother herself with what she wants to believe is the Nigerian Bar Association in denying her a professional membership over her flagrant disabuse of their laid down traditions with respect to the ceremonial dress code for inductees but should concern herself to the plight of the Muslim woman within the sharia realm.

As a Muslim woman and trained lawyer, she can never aspire to be a recognized sharia legal practitioner, judge or witness. The only time a sharia court can even accommodate her presence is when she must present testimony either as an accused or in the rare case they decide to hear her in an instituted case of divorce filed by her person.

So miss hijabi lawyer should factor in the fact that the asexual dress code in our secular courts provides her a level playing field where she is foremost and only recognised as a trained lawyer. Her sex or religion are not of anybody's concern within the legal profession and this should make her understand she as a Muslim woman has the full backing of the judiciary system to carry out her professional duties without bias to her gender or religion.

You know that this her singular action will lead to all those isues To be addressed. .And know too that if it comes to using legal skills, she would get lots of SANs to argue her case pro bono

And the case will be thrown out faster than her hijabi ass was hauled away from the ceremony

The dress code for lawyers is asexual and this was done to remove any bias

She should be grateful that she is in a profession that provides a non discriminatory level field for women

She should ask herself why as a muslim lawyer she can not hold council in a sharia court, provide testimony or aspire to the rank of a sharia judge.

Remember, all are equal in the eyes of the law

And the same afonjess should be reminded that in an exclusively Islamic society it is absolutely haram for her to drive a car talk more of being seen in a sharia court

Coming from someone who isnt allowed inside a mosque
Re: Why I Insisted On Wearing Hijab For Bar Ceremony – Firdaus by Nevee: 12:46pm On Dec 17, 2017
If her religion forbids her from removing the hijab, then let her religion call her to bar. That same religion forbids you from swearing, yet you wanted to enter the hall to take an oath. That's hypocrisy.

Going foward, they better allow members of the white garment churches to be called to bar in their robes too because I see the issue being resolved in her favour with the intervention of a few influential fanatics.

The Qur'an or Bible does not supercede our constitution.
