1) My passport is expiring in May next year, visa is expiring in April. I am traveling in January and back by April. Do I need a new passport? Does the 6 mths validity of passport apply during travel or just at point of application for a visa? Am going via Qatar and going to stay in the airport during the layover anyway.

2) My mum has a valid visa till end of February. Can she travel with it a week before expiry and stay for 6 weeks after the visa expires. I understand that it's the duration of your stay which the CBP stamps you have to adhere to and not the date of expiry of the visa.

Since you have a valid visa, if asked, madam should just state your current income. In any case, she needs to be in possession of evidence of this

Thanks Li. On the issue of consistency between my application and the interview, it's actually my wife that is applying. I have a valid visa. However, the monthly salary I stated in my ds-160 form when I applied is far less than what I earn now. My wife will definitely not be mentioning what i have on my ds-160 form as my monthly income if asked. How do you think we can navigate this?

1) your visa. It looks like (my interpretation o... I'm not 100% certain) you can travel in Jan with a visa expiring in Apr and passport expiring in May.....it seems you won't be signed in for the usual 6 months by CBP.....CBP stamp might not be longer than the expiry of the passport...see the link in the answer to FAQ question 1......to be extra extra safe (sorry I'm a scaredy cat in these matters) maybe you should just renew before you leave....if you're leaving Jan ending...you still have 4 weeks.....

2) mummy has no issues...provided she travels before end of Feb when visa expires...and CBP stamps her in for longer than 6 weeks (her intended length of stay)....see the answer to FAQ question 14. Assuming she has no passport expiry issues.

Also saw that the 6 mths rule applies when you are going to get a visa at the embassy not for travel. I honestly don't even need to be stamped in for 6 mths cos am back in April. I just want to know if I won't be harassed at Nigerian immigration when going (worried about their overzealousness) or at the
POE(unlikely as they can stamp up to the validity of passport or the date I want to leave anyway).
I have checked the Nigerian immigration site but still not seeing sufficient information.

Ikoyi passport office queue is not for the fainthearted and with Belle sitting down there in d sun is a lot of inconvenience am not interested in unless it is absolutely necessary. Thanks mamaron

My recommendation is to renew your passport before traveling. See below reasons

- According to http://www.ustraveldocs.com/ng/ng-gen-faq.asp#qlistgen1, "You must possess a passport valid for travel to the United States with a validity date at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States"
My interpretation is: if your intended period of stay is Jan-Apr 2018, you should have a passport valid till at least Oct 2018.

- CBP would typically stamp you in for 6 months from your date on entry (except in extraordinary situations). This could even be interpreted to mean you should have a valid passport till at least Dec 2018

- Some countries have agreements with the United States whereby their passports are recognized as valid for return to the country concerned for a period of six months beyond the expiration date specified in the passport. Nigeria is one of these countries. This means, it is possible to remain in US maximum of 6 months after the expiration of your passport. Be that as it may, the CBP officer may use their discretion to limit your stay, that is why I recommend you renew your passport.

A visa and immigration status are two things that people generally confuse. As long as your visa is valid, you may land on US soil. The CBP official determines how long you are allowed to remain in US regardless on the validity of your visa, this is what is referred to as immigration status.

I don't know of Lagos, but i have declared on two different occasion above 2ousk ant Abuja airport, i only fill some forms and was taking to another room where the purpose of carrying the money was asked and off of source. i filled another form and that was it;. o0ff i was allowed to go. even the usual naa," bro anything for ur boys was their ring tone all tru the form filling"

However, I chose her interview date considering my drop box application after which I had to change her appointment to 4th January hoping that I would have gotten my visa. Now that I don't have it yet, what can I do? I believe she's not qualified for a visa since I don't have one, pls guide me.

So I thought today would be the day I'd come here to finally share my story as a beneficiary of this thread for such a long time, but alas it was not to be
But I've decided to share this story still *long post alert*

I had my first visa appointment in September to go and have my 2ND baby in the US (I had my first over 6 yrs ago in the UK. The pregnancy was high risk and I needed to get out ASAP at the time and since I had a valid British visa, I decided to go to the UK immediately. I had my baby, paid all my bills and been back in the UK many times since then)
We had planned to travel to the US this Christmas for vacation but 10 days after we submitted our application(tourism), I found out I was pregnant (after over 6 years) so we decided that since our interview was about a month away, we would do the needful and let the consular officer know of our intention.

I wanted to have the baby in Houston since I have a lot of family there so I swung into action and started to do my research. Because my pregnancy is high risk (yet again) it was difficult to get a doctor that would accept me but with the help of the zocdoc app, I eventually found one and established correspondence. Fast forward to our interview in September, I was upfront with the consular officer and told him that even though I had initially planned to go on Xmas vacation, I now intend to go and have the baby in US. He said, even though he was aware the baby would arrive next year, he would like for us to reflect more money in our accounts and reapply.He denied us bases on that so
we took his advise and left.

Fast forward to today, we had our interview this morning. Please see transcript below:

VO: Good morning, passports please
DH and I: Good Morning (hands over passports, we were also with our son who was tired from the long queue)
He then took his time to go through the computer (please note that in the new DS160 form, I chose B2 for myself and B1/B2 for DH and son. We also mentioned our conversation with the last consular officer, mentioned that we had our son in the UK, had investments we would be liquidating to demonstrate our financial capacity)
VO: Why have you applied to go the US today ma'am
Me: I'm currently pregnant and would be travelling to have my baby
VO: Where do you work and what do you do for them
Me: I work with xxxx bank and I'm responsible for this, this, this and that across the group and our subsidiaries
He asks DH the same question and he answers
VO: How long have you worked for this organisation
DH: 11 years
VO: Have you travelled out of the country before
Me: Yes. Schooled in the UK, Been to Germany as well
DH: UK and US
VO: Any correspondence from the doctor, budget sheet and statements?
Me: I hand them over and tell him to read from bottom up (the correspondence shows where the doctor is willing to accept me as a high risk patient, our willingness to pay some money upfront and the doctor's response to only receive payment after I've gotten my visa)
VO: Looks through the letter and all the statements. (Our budget was over 5m. Hubby's savings had over 6m, dorm account over $2, 500, I had close to 2m in investment with a letter to the embassy notifying that I had access to the money within 48 hours of notice and Hubby had treasily bill statement indicating over 10m)
VO: Starts typing for a really long time and gives us the blue paper with "I'm sorry you do not qualify for a visa at this time"

I've been so devastated as I had rehearsed over and over again how I was going to share my success story here. I was planning to travel 2nd week in February. Hubby thinks we should try again, this time just me and then himself and my son can apply afterwards.
I'm honestly confused. Don't know if I'd get a date ASAP. I've made a resolve to just have the baby here, but my family thinks I should try again.

Sorry about the initial rejection dear but I think you should try again.

Quick questions though: Does your budget match the exact amount that the Dr quoted as basic for high risk patient costs. I'm guessing (novice opinion) that the VO might be worried about anything going wrong (GOD forbid) and then your budget / savings not being able to cover it and that might now result in the possibility of using the almighty Medicaid.

If your budget is an exact match for the basic I think you should adjust it. For instance if you were given a bill for Vaginal and CS even if you want Vaginal, let your budget reflect CS as that might show you are prepared for worst case scenario.

Just put the higher amount if you were given a range for any of the costs. Also is it necessary for your letter to state that you are high risk? Just thinking out loud.... You cant change that now but I'm just thinking if it's important and if that doesn't cause a red flag Medicaid warning bell to go off in some of the VOs minds.

Also the savings in you and Hubby's account did it grow to the 6m and 2m or were they lump sums paid in recently? I know a friend who was denied UK Visa cus they saw recent lump sum transfer and it was work related money o that went in an out and didn't affect the sufficiency of her balance self. Plus she schooled in the UK and has family there, they just denied her thw Visa.

Advise received from Chiroleck when I needed the emergency request too.

"just log on to your dashboard and click on emergency appointment, choose medical and explain why you missed the first appointment, explain the available dates and tell them that will make you miss your doctors appointment, upload the following documents: info from hospital, doctor's info and doctor's confirmation of appointment.

They'll respond the following day and tell you to choose a date. Goodluck".

Change the narrative as it applies to your situation. For you it wont be about a missed appointment obviously. In my case I added more documents like my Hubby's visa page, and other things that explained my situation better. Got a response in less than 24hrs and got to pick a date.

My budget reflected cost for Ceaseran Section (my first was ceaseran too) and additional doctor's fee for high risk patients which was reflected in the correspondence as well. I also included the higher ranges for all other costs (anaesthesia, pepediactrics, etc)[color=#006600][/color]

It was different proceeds from investments we liquidated- sale of shares, redemption of tbills, money market fund, etc

Attach a letter from your doctor in Nigeria stating your EDD and medical history, correspondence with a doctor in the U.S. stating pricing estimates, evidence that you have the funds for the medicals, such as bank statement, pay slip.Please also include your budget sheet.
