he has to be technically savvy. otherwise, there's no point in attempting this.

ordinarily he should just copy out his files to an external drive, and install the Linux.

But i'm guessing that's not an option,
so he should partition the hard drive in windows 8.


E.G He has one hard drive partition labelled C:/

if he partitions it, it will create another partition D:/ and he will now have C and D partitions

copy the files he wants to keep into the newly created empty partition D:/

Install Linux into the partition C:/ containing windows. Ensure he is careful during installation to not format the whole drive, and to only install Linux in the first partition C:/


After booting Linux successfully, he can then copy the files in D:/ into the partition containing Linux

Then delete/format D:/ and reclaim the space.


If any of this sounds complicated, or difficult he should not attempt it, cos he WILL lose everything on the drive

There are alternatives but you'll have to learn them, and they may not have all the features you are used to.


There are also ways of running Windows applications on Ubuntu, but being a newbie, the whole setup might be too much for you to handle.


If you really are interested in Ubuntu, Learn how to dualboot it with your current windows. That way you can learn how to use it gradually and see if you'll like it, And also still have your current windows setup for your work.

In my experience, most people don't have machines powerful enough to run VMs properly. And between guest additions etc, setting one up ends up being even more complicated.

even my boss [ a man with plenty of dough] was running an i3 laptop with intel graphics. it is only now he is buying a high end device. sometimes it is outright shocking when you meet people who are supposed to be professionals running underpowered laptops with 32 bit windows, 2gb of ram dual cores.

i was supposed to work with a young architect on a pp project. i was telling the guy i would show him some tools he could use to drastically improve his efficiency; he gave me his laptop to set them up and it was 32bit, 2gb ram. i was just looking at the guy. he was running autocad 2008 on his pc, which was the best he could have done under the circumstances. i just gave up. no point.

you will also come across other guys who will by force run vmware on win 7laptops because they are trying to run the legacy engineering apps.
it is not just country, it is also nigerians who think you can always manage everything

well, that and greedy sellers who love to sell rubbish at high prices. it is always best if you have someone abroad, you can buy manufacturer refurb laptops at rock bottom prices

3d modelling - minimum core i5 [i7 strongly recommended], with nvidia 2gb or better. 8gb ram is entry level these days

that laptop will walk the software, but run it - maybe the smallest basest model - if you start getting ambitious and doing detailed high poly models, you will get frustrated very quickly

best option is to download latest version from their site, if you want to have a full desktop environment. unfortunately, size keep increasing with each release of new version. I don't use these ISOs anymore though

of course both are good for beginners. I mean Ubuntu and mint. They both use dpkg as package manager. So software differences is not a decider. Any desktop environment is fine. xfce, Cinnamon, gnome etc.

1. Xfce is as good as any other ui, and yes it's less unfamiliar than say gnome3 if you're coming from windows.
2. Yes, mint is compatible with ubuntu and they are more or less the same with minor differences that probably won't matter to you. You can install ubuntu packages on mint. In fact you could alter your software repo to point to ubuntu's repo without any significant repercussions - until you decide to upgrade to another version

Does your windows boot with grub or windows bootloader?

If it's windows bootloader, you can simply delete those partitions and reclaim them with disk management tool in windows

Just type 'Disk Management' into start menu search you'll see the app....

You could search jumia/konga if there's any usb ethernet/wifi card or sound card. But i'm really surprised that none of those things are working. Are you sure it isn't a hardware issue?

You simply having drivers issues.

You should have partitioned it with windows 10 so as to be sharing the windows 10 drivers.

I partitioned mine. No issue with either bluetooth or wifi.

Go to "softwares and updates" then "additional drivers" if there are drivers available to install.
