Contradictions In The Bible — Why Are They There? by OLAADEGBU(m): 5:00pm On Dec 01, 2017
Contradictions in the Bible — Why are they there?

"And the superscription of His accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS" (Mark 15:26).

The Bible has many seeming contradictions within its pages. For example, the four Gospels give four differing accounts as to what was written on the sign that hung on the cross.

"And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, 'THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS'." — Matthew 27:37

"The inscription of the charge against Him read, 'THE KING OF THE JEWS'." — Mark 15:26

"Now there was also an inscription above Him, 'THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS'." — Luke 23:38

"Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, 'JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS'." — John 19:19

Those who are looking for contradictions may therefore say, "See—the Bible is full of mistakes!" and choose to reject it entirely as being untrustworthy.

However, those who trust God have no problem harmonizing the Gospels. There is no contradiction if the sign simply said, "This is Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews." The godly base their confidence on two truths: 1) "all Scripture is given by inspiration of God" (2 Timothy 3:16); and 2) an elementary rule of Scripture is that God has deliberately included seeming contradictions in His Word to "snare" the proud. He has "hidden" things from the "wise and prudent" and "revealed them to babes" (Luke 10:21), purposely choosing foolish things to confound the wise (1 Corinthians 1:27).

If an ungodly man refuses to humble himself and obey the gospel, and instead desires to build a case against the Bible, God gives him enough material to build his own gallows. This incredible principle is clearly illustrated in the account of the capture of Zedekiah, king of Judah. Jeremiah the prophet told Zedekiah that God would judge him. He was informed that he would be "delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon" (Jeremiah 32:4). This is confirmed in Jeremiah 39:5-7 where we are told that he was captured and brought to King Nebuchadnezzar, then they "bound him with chains, to carry him to Babylon."

However, in Ezekiel 12:13, God Himself warned, "I will bring him to Babylon …yet he shall not see it, though he shall die there" (emphasis added). Here is material to build a case against the Bible! It is an obvious mistake. Three Bible verses say that the king would go to Babylon, and yet the Bible in another place says that he would not see Babylon. How can someone be taken somewhere and not see it? It makes no sense at all—unless Zedekiah was blinded. And that is precisely what happened. Zedekiah saw Nebuchadnezzar face to face, saw his sons killed before his eyes, then "the king of Babylon… put out Zedekiah's eyes" before taking him to Babylon (Jeremiah 39:6,7). This is the underlying principle behind the many "contradictions" of Holy Scripture (such as how many horses David had, who was the first to arrive at the tomb after the resurrection of Jesus, etc.).

God has turned the tables on proud, arrogant, self-righteous man. When he proudly stands outside of the kingdom of God, and seeks to justify his sinfulness through evidence he thinks discredits the Bible, he doesn't realize that God has simply lowered the door of life, so that only those who are prepared to exercise faith, and bow in humility may enter. It is interesting to note that the seeming contradictions in the four Gospels attest to the fact that there was no corroboration between the writers.

23.

And [Judas] cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. —Matthew 27:5

Now [Judas] purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. —Acts 1:18

Ans 23

Joh 4:1 When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John
Joh 4:2 (although Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples),

The same principle applies.

Mat 27:3 Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and

elders,
Mat 27:4 saying, I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou to it.
Mat 27:5 And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.
Mat 27:6 And the chief priests took the pieces of silver, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood.
Mat 27:7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.
Mat 27:8 Wherefore that field was called, the field of blood, unto this day.

Judas by his act of betrayal 'bought' the field though we know in actual fact that it was the priest that did the actual purchase from money made available by Judas

himself. Even dead men still carry out feats long after they are gone and it attributed to them.

Taking the example OLAADEGBU wrote above about the four gospels, if there was a ploy at fraud , the four books would have been reforged to not make contradictions happen but what we actually see is the report of an incident many years after the event recollected by different witnesses. An authentic manuscript is expected to have these contradictions but on a good look at at harmonizing all four, the point can be gotten and even all four would be seen as true.

One cool thing about the bible is that these are actually stories and verification can always be made by manuscripts (canon and non canon) written around the same time to balance and sometimes detect possible errors like the one below.

6.

Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. —2 Kings 24:8
Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem… —2 Chronicles 36:9

And 6

2Ch 36:9 Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah.

2Ki 24:8 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign; and he reigned in Jerusalem three months: and his mother's name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem.
2Ki 24:15 And he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon; and the king's mother, and the king's wives, and his officers, and the chief men of the land, carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon.

Obviously there was an error in Chronicles with the age being eight instead of eighteen in Kings. He is said to have wives and since precedence does not show israelite kings inheriting the prvious king's wives it would be out of place for a eight year old kid to have wives. Also what kind of grevious sin could an eight year old kid have done for God to totally reject him

Jer 22:24 As I live, saith Jehovah, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet upon my right hand, yet would I pluck thee thence

4.

And in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month…Nebuzaradan…came…unto Jerusalem… —2 Kings 25:8
…in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month …came Nebuzaradan…into Jerusalem… —Jeremiah 52:12

Ans 4

In attempting to reconcile these two passages, it must be supposed either that, though he had set out on the seventh, he did not arrive in Jerusalem till the tenth, or that he did not put his orders in execution till that day.

But in 2Ki_25:8, it is said "the seventh day." Nebuzara-dan started from Riblah on the "seventh" day and arrived in Jerusalem on the "tenth" day. Seeming discrepancies, when cleared up, confirm the genuineness of Scripture; for they show there was no collusion between the writers; as in all God's works there is latent harmony under outward varieties.

Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary

13.

Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign. —II Kings 8:26
Forty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign. —II Chronicles 22:2

Ans 13

2Ki 8:16 And in the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, Jehoshaphat being then king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah began to reign.
2Ki 8:17 Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.
2Ki 8:24 And Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.

2Ki 8:26 Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Athaliah the daughter of Omri king of Israel.
2Ch 22:2 Forty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Athaliah the daughter of Omri.

From verse 17 above it is evident that Joram father of Ahaziah was forty years when he died and his son could only have been twenty two years old when he took after his father's throne. The 2nd Chronicles part could only have been a wrong typo from the transcribers of the book of Chronicles as the son could not have been two years older than his own father. Pretty lousy I would say for historians of a whole kingdom.

28.

Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death. —II Samuel 6:23

But the king took the two sons of Rizpah…and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul. —II Samuel 21:8

Ans 28

2Sa 21:8 But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she bare to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite

I would say at this point the original compiler of this writeup is indeed trickish as he/she intentionally left out the ending part of the second verse. Michal had a husband named Adriel with whom she had at least five sons. When she married David afterwards she never had an issue for him. So the sons being used as ransom here were her children from a previous marriage thus she was not barren.

The bible has no contradictions. Those who are confused should humbly seek knowledge. If you don't know and thinks the bible is contradictory, ask questions and someone somewhere is ahead of you in God's word and you can find help.

This is more like Paul's letter confusing many today in the church and seemingly contradictory but a careful study and putting everything taught by himself together, you learn it's not contradictory at all
