Honda and Toyota have announced recalls affecting more than 1 million vehicles to replace potentially deadly Takata airbag inflators that can explode on deployment.

These most recent recalls come after Takata announced another 3.3 million inflators are defective and needed to be recalled. In total, Takata-related recalls have included 69 million inflators equipped in 42 million vehicles manufactured by 19 automakers.

Takata uses the chemical ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion and fill air bags quickly in a crash. But the chemical can deteriorate when exposed to high humidity and temperatures and burn too fast, blowing apart a metal canister and throwing hot shrapnel into drivers and passengers.

Defective Takata airbag inflators have been linked at least 20 deaths worldwide, with the majority occurring in the United States. The airbags have also been linked to more than 180 injuries.

Toyota says its recall will cover 601,000 vehicles while Honda will be recalling 465,000 vehicles.

2009, 2010 & 2013 Scion xB

Won't it be better if they have trained engineers in their showroom/service centers in different countries to take care of these rather than recalling back to their country. Just saying sha, thank God my car no follow.

Of course it'll be disastrous!

They all have explosives to aid rapid deployment and inflation of the bags.

I know African countries won't be able to return the affected vehicles for repairs because the companies don't have takata workshops here. What do we do then?
