Lagos State Government partners MainOne on free Wi-Fi

In her comments, MainOne’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Funke Opeke, represented by the Sales Manager, Public Sector, Funmike Olayera, lauded Lagos State’s commitment to evolving into a Smart City and stressed that ICT must remain at the center of the transformation of Lagos State. Andela’s landmark funding round

How could we start with anything else? Coding school Andela announced in October it had secured US$40 million in Series C funding from a host of investors, taking its total venture funding to over US$80 million.

The round was led by pan-African firm CRE Venture Capital (catch up with co-founder Pule Taukobong here), and will be used to fuel Andela’s pan-African expansion.

A quick mention too for former Andela co-founder Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, whose new venture – payments startup Flutterwave – secured funding of its own in August, a US$10 million Series A round.



CcHub expands its scope

Nigerian incubator Co-Creation Hub (CcHub) had an even busier year than most, exhibited mainly by its European PitchDrive, held in partnership with Google. CcHub took 14 startups from across Africa to various European hubs to pitch to potential investors and partners.

There were also two programmes launched in partnership with Union Bank, and a diaspora challenge, while the hub also signed a multinational partnership to boost STEM learning across Africa.

Lagos Africa’s most valuable startup ecosystem

Lagos has the most valuable startup ecosystem in Africa, with the local entrepreneurship scene worth US$2 billion, according to March report.

The Global Startup Ecosystem Report and Ranking 2017, produced by Startup Genome in collaboration with the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN), was based on conversations with entrepreneurs and data on startups.

No African country made the top 20, but Lagos, Cape Town and Johannesburg warranted mention in the report. At US$2 billion, the Lagos startup ecosystem is the most valuable in Africa continent, but only second after Cape Town in terms of the number of startups.

Rensource raises $3.5m to take affordable renewable energy to more Nigerians





Ademola “Demmy” Adesina is the founder and CEO of Rensource, a West African-focused distributed energy services company.

Rensource, a Lagos-based renewable energy startup, has raised $3.5 million in bridge financing to expand its business. This is coming nearly 2 years after a previous seed round of $1.1m in 2016.

This new round is led by Mauritius-based Amaya Capital Partners, with participation from Omidyar Network and Pule Taukobong‘s CRE Venture Capital, which previously led Andela’s $40m Series C round. Interestingly, CRE Venture Capital participated in the original seed round for Rensource.

Founded in 2015 by Ademola Adesina and Jussi Savukoski, Rensource is hinged on a core belief that distributed power generation will be a critical element in solving the power problem in Nigeria.

Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency agrees. According to her, “Nigerians spend about $14 billion annually on inefficient power generation. Off-grid alternatives like creating mini grid and solar home systems can easily be at $9.2 billion a year, which will save the Nigerian public and citizens $4.2 billion.”

In March 2017, Rensource introduced a tiered subscription-based business model that enabled customers pay to use energy, rather than own the infrastructure. The idea was to provide affordable renewable energy on a ‘Power-as-a-Service’ (PaaS) basis.

100 companies invest N2tn in Ogun State

The Ogun State Government has said that more than 100 companies have set up businesses in the state, adding that each of them has investment in excess of N200bn.

The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, disclosed this on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Ota plant of Nigerian Breweries Plc.

He said, “Over the years, Ogun State has become a preferred destination for investors. As of the last count, over 100 companies started their operations in our state with each of them investing about N200bn in the nation’s economy.”

Amosun explained that the firms were attracted to the state because of the ambience created by his administration in the last six years for businesses to thrive.

He said, “We have not only created offshore enquiries on availability of land and processes, we have also sped up the time of processing papers on land matters. We are also investing heavily in infrastructure all in a bid to engender conducive climate for investors in our state.

“In the same vein, we are also working assiduously to continue to empower the various security outfits in our state despite the fact that they are on the exclusive list in our constitution.

“Let me assure you that we will continue to maintain vigilance and optimise our intelligence gathering to ensure that all our companies here are secure and safe.”

He disclosed that his administration was working with the Federal Government to ensure the Sango/Ota industrial area was fully integrated into the infrastructural development agenda, adding, “It is hoped that our synergy with the government will yield maximum benefit to all the people of Sango and its environs,” he said.

The Continuous Growth of the Agbara Industrial City

The Agbara industrial estate is on a 650 hectares expanse of land in Agbara area of Ogun state adjacent to an existing industrial estate.
It is strategically located to be less than ten minutes from the lagos-Ibadan Highway.
he Agbara Industrial Estate would be developed to accommodate industrial and residential uses with the industrial zone occupying 450 hectares while the residential zone occupies 150 hectares.
In addition to this, the Industrial estate has a commercial area that accommodates a shopping mall, hotel, eateries and ancillary services. There is a Logistics section that comprises offices, trailer park(s) and other support facilities.
It also boasts of lots of green areas and strategic landscaping.

The site is planned for medium and heavy manufacturing industries.

The estate has two major areas: the industrial zone occupying 450 hectares and the residential zone which occupies 150 hectares.
The Industrial area is divided into plot sizes of an average of 1.5 hectares each.
In addition to this, AIE also has a commercial area that accommodates a shopping mall, hotel, eateries and ancillary services.
And a Logistics section that comprises offices, trailer park(s) and other support facilities.

The rice, named Mitros Rice, packaged in 50kg bags, was produced at Egua land in Yewa South Local Government Area of the state, but the processing and packaging facilities are sited in Asero area of Abeokuta, the state capital.

Mr. Amosun said the rice farmers in Ogun would no longer need to travel far in search of milling facilities.

The Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola on Thursday launched a research and training farm institute in his quest to transform agriculture sector in the state.

The Research Institute which is located at Ago Owu, Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun was accomplished in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in a bid to boost agricultural production.

Launching the institute at Ago-Owu Farm Settlement, Aregbesola attributed the success of the scheme to unflinching support which the state received from the officials of the IITA.

Aregbesola said the step was as a result of his passion to get the state rid of hanger and poverty also said that the state had released 205.5 hectares of land for the take-off of the programme as part of efforts to advance agriculture in the state.
