Degbin Kumbusu was their ancestor. He was the brother to Derin Ologbenla & Derin Ologbenla was an Uncle to Ogunwusi Ayikiti Ojaja l the present Ooni’s great grandfather.

@Efewestern

WOW! ... Thanks for this brilliant post.
That is why I have been following you
on NL because I know that you are deep
with firsthand history of Urhoboland.

You shed more light on some historical
FACTS that I never knew today on Urhobo
history... such as the Okpe people.

Somehow, I noticed that Urhobos and Yorubas
tend to even marry a lot... even Urhobos
and Itsekiris have a lot of intermarriages.

I have Urhobo friends that have Itsekiri mothers and Itsekiris that I know
like Prof. Itse Sagay and the Vanguard Newspaper Publisher, Chief Sam Amuka-Pemu
have Urhobo mothers!

RMD's father is actually an Urhobo man
while his mother is Itsekiri. That is where
Eyimofe the Itsekiri name comes from!

A lot of what you wrote are NOT even known
to people in the public domain. And should
be taught in all institutions and special online educational channels so that Nigerians will
know that we have ALWAYS interacted even
before the British colonialism era.

I see Urhobos in a newer light from today... grin

Thanks for your kind response!

All the best!

lol, to me Urhobo have always been cousins.

Indomie generation are the most ignorant set of children in Nigeria's history. Their views are limited to the 1999 artificial geopolitical constructions of Nigeria. Before you say Pim, they will start shouting We are south-south, as if Ogoja man and Itsekiri man have anything in common.

Informative thread as usual.

When the children of Ogiewen in a Yoruba colony up to today called Ile-Ibinu indirectly still refuse to accept their names in Yoruba of their ruling house, their Arts heavily influenced by Yoruba and their lingua franca in the palace in Yoruba;

one has to wonder why every group surrounding them they claimed they influenced accept their Yoruba origin.

Even anyone with a deep knowledge of history frawn on this obvious ignorance without getting involved.

Anyway, this thread prove we have more in common than the desire of being the suzeriegn group.

As for Lagos, it is still surprising that a portion of land where one house is built for the compromised king between Awori Ashipa and Oba Bini surrounded by many houses of other Awori in Isaleko has now become Bini influence in Lagos.

Can anyone compare that one piece of land to Brazilian quarters, Sierra Leone (Saro) influence, Dahomey, Ghana and Engish influences on Awori the Idejo owner of Lagos from Eti Osa to Badagry into Dahomey?

Someone I knew back in my undergraduate days in Nigeria had
"Okoro" as his surname. He was a full-blooded, pounded yam-loving Ekiti
guy! grin

Okoro has something to do with "bitterness" according to the Ekiti version. Urhobos also bear Okoro
as surnames. Oko has something to do
with "man" in Itsekiri and Urhobo.

On the other hand Itsekiris use the spelling
: Ogedegbe! In other parts of Yoruba, Ogedengbe with a letter "n" is used.

Itsekiris also use Omatsola, Omawumi etc.
Omosola and Omowumi are the Yoruba
equivalents.

Itsekiri language is classified as Eastern
Yoruboid just like the Ondo state sub groups.

All the best.

Itsekiris is classified under Edodroid languages

@Rex123

I like your use of "Edodroid." [Edo Android].
Macof could not help being amused too... grin

Okay... Itsekiris are Yoruboid and Edoid
in terms of ancestry and culture.

Before the arrival of Prince Ginuwa [his mother
was from Ife] with 70 of his royal supporters from Benin after he had to go on
exile because of a cultural violation, there were
already Itsekiris of Yoruba ancestry of Ijebu, Ilaje
and Ife origins in the Itsekiri region of Delta
State.

Prince Ginuwa [whose father was Oba Olua
of Benin] arrived in Ode-Itsekiri in the 1480s
and met Chief Lenuwa and his people of Ijebu origin
who accepted and his entourage on learning
he was of Royal origin from Benin. Prince
Ginuwa eventually became the FIRST Olu of the
Itsekiris. I must add that the Itsekiri language
is similar to Yoruba dialects of the Eastern
Yoruba regions [Ijebu, Ilaje], with Edo words
and Portuguese loan words as well!

Omadino is another Itsekiri community
that was founded by Ijebus just like
Ode-Itsekiri.

The oil-rich Ugborodo [otherwise called
Escravos] was founded over 500 years
ago by Ilaje people who migrated eastward
from Ugboland in Ondo State...which shares
boundaries with Itsekiriland in Delta State.

The popular "George fabric" was first used
by the Itsekiris several centuries back
because of their early contact with the
Portuguese and other European explorers
even before the Binis.

I hope this information helps.

Itsekiri Modern history (Post 1480) starts from Ginuwa.

Itsekiri primordial history starts from Yorubaland.

Absolutely @Scholes0.

I've corrected my post...1480s is Ginuwa's
arrival in Itsekiriland.

On the other hand, I saw a post of yours
on the Akoko-Edo thread and Ibillo thread
for the first time 2 days ago.

I would like to know from you which one of the
Akoka Edo towns have Yoruboid indigenes
in them. Is Lampese one of the Yoruboid
communities?

I know that most Akoko Edo represent Edoid
ancestry.

A friend of mine in the University in Nigeria
told me he wasn't Yoruba but Edo decades
back... even though his name was Femi Ajakaiye.
He was from Akoko Edo. It was interesting
getting to learn his family history. He even
spoke very fluent Yoruba.

Thanks. smiley

Itsikeri are Edo (Meaning: first class citizens of Benin Kingdom, like Urhobo or Anioma ...), they used to be politically aligned with the south-west. But it ends there.
They are part of Benin Kingdom.
You guys need to stop with all these stories.
Stop confusing little children.

Yoruba was derived from "Oyo Oba"...
Please shed more light on the etymology

Ikakumo, Ayanran, Aiyeteju, and Ago-Ogbodo

In most of the others You will find some people saying Ife, You will find some saying Benin, while yet still you will find some saying they came from Ife, but via Benin after they had settled there for a while hence the language disconnection.

Me right now, I am more personally interested in the truly Yoruba communities in Ovia North East and Ovia South West.

The Edo must be verry special for yoruba to be so obsessed about Edo.
Everyday yoruba must try to claim one Edo group or an other, just keep trying to claim !
Very soon these yoruba will be trying to claim my children.
I would really like to understand where this obsession comes from.
Why don't you just try to claim egypt or mecca like you used to ?
Why us ?

Beadbury (1967) who did extensive research on the people of the area on the other hand, reported three sources of ancestry for the people there, Benin, Ife and Idah.
It should be noted that the Ebira groups are the ones who used to claim to have come from Idah. These days, they still mention Idah but only as a stopover location from their true origins among the Kororofa.

Thanks for this information @Schole0.

I read that the Ebiras and Igalas are of the
same stock... coming originally from
the Jukun region or Kwararafa like you

The Ebiras used to be ruled by a figure called the Atta of Ebira before, they not too long ago changed it to Ohinoyi.
Political enmity between them and the Igala have increased their differences.

Funnily enough the languages both groups speak have nothing to do with Jukun. Ebira has about 30% cognate similarity with Nupe, Gade and Gbagyi , While Igala has about 65% cognition with Yoruba-Itsekiri.

As for the Akoko-Edos

Here is your confirmation as to my earlier point which I made years ago in the other thread.

Usen is another one. Their original migratory stock is at Okelusen in Ondo state which is at an higher elevation (hence the name).

"Eastern Igbo" is generally referred to as "Igbo".

Olukumi are Edo not yoruba.
And Anioma is synonymous to Western Igbo !!! And they are also Edo !

You can actually lose brain cells by just reading notes written by "yoruba".
Shouldn't you yoruba rather be talking about your own people (on whom you don't know a single thing by the way) rather than venturing on other people on whom you know nothing as well.
