The Igbo And Present Politics Of Education In Nigeria. by ofai: 1:17pm On Mar 11, 2018
Politics in Education has done more harm than good in Nigeria and Nigeria is and will continue pay dearly for it. Before now, Education in Nigeria was MORE merit based snd LESS politically manipulated.

Only the best and innovative brains ran the school systems from primary to tertiary education. In the 50s and 60s, the regionally owned universities (UNN, OAU, ABU) were well manned by competent individuals from those regions. The Federally owned universities (UI, UNILAG) had little political interference as competence was the first in the order of priorities.

The igbos shone so brightly both at regional and federal levels. They practically took over from their colonial masters as they recorded numerous firsts due to competence and innovativeness. It boosted the igbos standard of living as a people and as a region.

‘ Paul Anber’s essay “Modernization and Political Disintegration: Nigeria and the Ibos” published in the journal of Modern African Studies vol. 5, No 2 (Sep, 1967) 163-179. To be more specific see pp 171-172, and let me quote the relevant portion of Dr. Anber’s essay:

A system of Universal primary education was introduced in Eastern Nigeria in 1953, though the mission schools had already prospered in the Region long before then. Despite the fact that there was a requirement for limited contributory fees, education continued to be very much in demand. Even at the time when universal primary education was first introduced, the percentage of the population over seven years of age who were literate was higher in the East than in any other Region: East, 10.6 per cent; West 9.5 percent; North, 0.9 percent. Since 1959, the East has had more teachers and pupils than any other area of the country, with the heaviest emphasis on primary education. Figures for elementary and secondary education indicate that the approximate ratio of teachers to population in 1963 was 1 to every 1,500 in the East, 1 to every 2,500 in th West, and 1 for every 10,000 in the north. Other statistical data reveal how rapidly the standard of living rose among Ibos. The East had the most extensive hospital facilities in the country by 1965, the largest regional production of electricity in the country by 1954, and the greatest number of vehicle registrations by 1963. The economic orientation of the Ibos was also reflected through membership of credit associations:in 1963 the East had 68,220 individual members, the west 5,776, and the north a mere 2,407.” ”…

His source was the Annual Abstract of Statistics ( Federal Office of Statistics, Lagos, 1965), Table 2.4, p. 14..

UI (Federal) had Kenneth Dike after colonialists left
UNILAG (Federal) had Eni Njoku after colonialists left.
UNN (Regional) also had Eni Njoku after the colonialists left.

Yabatech had an Igbo Rector after the colonialists left too.

.
....FAST-FORWARD TO POST-WAR NIGERIA....

UNN, OAU and ABU became federal owned universities, while UI and UNILAG maintained their status quo. More federal and state universities were established. QUOTA SYSTEM WAS INTRODUCED. Merit became SECONDED in the order of priorities.

Where are igbos in all of these?

1. They have managed thrive despite the political disadvantage they find themselves in.

YORUBAS by political sentiments now owns UI and UNILAG, but somehow, igbos have shown courage in excelling academically and professionally in these schools except in VCships.

You see igbos also thriving in other western schools, as well as northern and southern schools both federal and state owned ones.

UNN, FUTO, UNIZIK, MOUAU, FED-EBONYI, and state owned universities are now schools in which Igbo professors can compete for VCship. Despite low funding from FG, they have been able to churn out graduates that can compete with best ANYWHERE in the world.

Dora Akunyili, Oby Ezekwesili, Bennet Omalu, Okechukwu Enemalah, Herbert Wigwe, Charles Soludo, Arunma Oteh, Fabian Udekwu, Ndubuisi Ekekwe, Tricia Adaobi, to mention but a few are some of the best brands in the world today thst finished from "Igbo" Universities. It is reported by the NBS that as of 2010, most Nigerian professors hail from IMO state, overtaking Ekiti state.

We ain't lagging behind at the secondary school level.
Anambra topped the WASSCE chart for a while before Abia now took over at present. IMO tops the charts in JAMB entries for matriculation. Ebonyi has risen considerably in secondary and tertiary education.

Politics have dragged our academic system down, yet, the die-hard and innovative spirit of Igbo students and teachers alike have continue to placed Igbo education on not only African map, but also on the global map.

What are your thoughts?

Ndigbo Jishienu ike..... Igbo Amaka.

In the North, for example, the Hausa-Fulani have always been the most Ethnocentric, suspicious of cultural penetration nd economic competition from the south, protective of deeply ingrained traditional institutions, united by discipline of their Muslim religion, and strongly resistance to change in their theocratic emirate system of political rule. Despite the history of their dominance in the federation, the North has largely segregated themselves from the rest of the nation, remainded the most insular region in the country and became resentful of the progress being made modernization of the southern region.

The fact that the first indigenous VCs and rector of UI, Unilag and Yabatech respectively were Igbos shows how liberal the Yorubas have always been. There were pool of Yorubas to have chosen from but they remained detribalized. The same can't be said about the Igbos. Also, Herbert Macaulay passed the mantle of leadership to Nnamdi Azikiwe when there were pools of Yoruba to chose from. Why wasn't an Igboman the first VC of ABU Zaria.
The Yorubas have already learnt their lesson which proves what Ahmadu Bello said about the Igbos right. Igbos are selfish, greedy and always want to eat their cake and have it. More Yorubas are now privy to their plans against them and as such will not be tolerated any more. They can cry marginalization all I care. You can never please them

Were UI, UNILAG and YABATECH owned by the western regional government or the Federal Government?

Ans: they were NOT owned by western regional government. So Yorubas were not doing any favors to Igbos to run the school.

Was ABU a federal owned institution or northern region owned institution?

Ans: It was owned by the northern regional government NOT federal government

Was OAU (ife) not was ran by the western regional government just as ABU and UNN ran by their respective regional governments at that time?

Ans: It was ran by the western regional government.

Their's no basis of comparison between the Yorubas and little igbos. Shouting and hyping yourself from now till eternity won't change anything.

Even the igbo language (your identity) itself was lettered by a Yoruba man.

So you think those Igbo VCs were chosen because there were no suitable Yorubas. U must be very high. Why is it hat almost all the federal schools in the country now have VCs indigenous to the region where the schools are situated? Even greedy Zik wanted to rule the western region because of the huge tolerance he got

Why are you dignifying them with reply bro.

They know they ain’t no match for the Yorubas that’s why they always come up with different analogy everyday to try prove some sort of superiority.

Even the average ibo guy knows they ain’t no match with the Yorubas in terms of overall literacy rate.

So they need to keep proving to us everyday that they are better than us.

Just leave them and stop replying them. If it makes them happy to keep saying they are more educated, then we don’t have a choice than to keep looking at them.
