Prior to the news that made round recently about the exorbitant rise in medical fees of the University of Ibadan Medical students, the students are currently protesting about this selfish attitude of the school management.

University of Ibadan college of medicine released the fees schedule with the college of medicine increasing their fees by more than 200% from a cumulative sum of 35,000-45,000k before (school fees +clinical levy) to 139,000 + naira ...

According to the college there will be subsequent increases as the minimum amount to train a doctor is up to 500,000+ naira..

Please save a UIte.....

This is a Federal institution not privately owned....

Say no to hike in UnibadanMedicalFee

As a physiology student, I still have to pay 75k for a training I won’t undergo. If that isn’t robbery, then tell me what is.

And they hiked accomodation fee from 14k to 30k,the halls are nothing to write home about sad.I stayed on 2nd floor, block b in Indy last session, part of the railings has been damaged for like 2 sessions and they refused to repair it not minding the security implications. I'm sure nothing would be done about the state of the halls even with the money they'll collect now.Thieves

It's time to pack my loads and head off-campus

Wasting their time and money going to the university to study medicine, something they can easily learn within one year from a herbalist and it's also very cheap

Where are we heading to in this country?

The COMUI was so dear to me. What has happened over the years. COMUI was a place to be, whether you are rich or poor. At this rate, only the children of the rich can have access to education. What is left for the children of the common man?

QUITE SAD!!!

Let's be truthful for once.
N39k is grossly inadequate for a medical student school fee.
What government should do is create scholarship for every student, repayable and at no interest so that public institutions can also grow by charging affordable, fairer but sustainable fees.

Yes, government should do that.
But, government isn't.

Now, why should students pay as if the school is a private institution?
And this is happening only in University of Ibadan

Then what do you say about paying a professional levy for a course that is not professional?

i think the government has tried enough, tertiary education is highly subsidized in this country, even at that 100k.

But let's face it, 40k for medical training is laughable, even 100k. Compare our university fees to other universities outside the country, even in ordinary Ghana the cheapest fees one can get is $2000. We don't pay tax yet government subsidizes everything. That is why when oil prices crash, govt can pay teachers, tell me, what is the correlation between oil price and primary school teachers.

However, we must also take the students plight into consideration. I consider it wicked to just suddenly hike the fees like that. Most of those students came into the school because it was the 40k they could afford, how will they cope now. What UI should have done is to gradually phase out the old fees and gradually phase in the new fees by making old students continue with the old fees till they graduate while freshers pay the new fees till they graduate. this way, there won't be unnecessary pressure on anyone, those that can afford it will apply to UI, while does that can't will apply elsewhere.
