I want to take out a small space here to tell the story of how I started a soap making business. The essence of this is to help those who may wish to venture into the soap business and also to inspire people to try out some entrepreneurial ventures (not necessarily soap making). I must say that many stories and individuals here have added to my inspiration. People like Cosmeticchemist, Gbadexy, O2 soap (O2 Nigeria), Blackkie (Britishknight or 1kingwriter), Jasper7, through their stories have inspired me so much into believing "I can do it if only I put my mind to it". So I wish to help and inspire more people.

In the course of this story we are going to see how I was able to get my machines, learn and start soap making business. I hope to find time to attend to every questions as much as I can. By the end of the day, depending on how it goes, we may have to conduct a live seminar for those who will want to go into small scale soap making business. If possible, we may consider creating a small group of partners and then crowd funding to help them setup and manage a tangible small scale soap making business. We will also discuss and interact with existing soap makers who are having difficulties in running there business due cost, and map out strategies to move forward effectively and efficiently.

We fabricate and install efficient soap making machines and equipment. We also manage soap making facilities on contract basis. We conduct test run for already installed machines. I must appreciate you. Gbadexy taught me paint business even without meeting him. I used the paint business as a side hustle to start up my soap business. I felt very sad when I learnt what happened. I am happy his firm is growing stronger every day.

Good morning. It is a beautiful morning today. So the story begins...

I have never thought of starting a business. I have grown up to believe that life is about going to school, getting a certificate and getting a job. That mindset change when I landed my first job. It was a pharmaceutical company and I was made the manager/QCM. I learnt the basics of running a business from that firm. Shortly after, I started nursing the idea of setting up my own but there was no idea of what that could be.

So I was in Nairaland, business section searching for what i can do. I came across O2 Soap. That was how i feel in love with soap making. I started researching about soap making, got a lot of articles, books, and youtube videos from the internet.


"Soap making is one thing, soap making business is another."

When I was convinced to start a soap business, every of my thoughts was how to go about this business. I decided on the level i wanted to start. I started making contacts and meeting people who where already in the business. From Aba to Onitsha, I visited soap firms including moribund ones. I also made contacts online. I just needed to know the basics of what it would take me to start. Now i know some basic machines i will need (soap boiler, amalgamator, plodder and cutting table), how do i get them was the next thing that bothered me. I reached out to some foriegn firms, their prices were too much for me. I contacted local fabricators, their own prices were less but still far more than what i had then. The cheapest i got was from a guy in Onitsha but the prices were still not affordable to me. I kept asking myself, How do i go about this with little fund and most importantly, no time, as my job was taking every time i had on earth. I even get calls from my boss at midnights to inquire about stocks and production schedules. The pay was small, the job was too much and there was no time. The options i had were to either do the fabrication myself, start a side business that could yield more money so i can plunge it into the business or resign from my present job and go figure out everything outside.

it depends on the level you want to start. The method you want to use and machines/equipment you want to start with. While some claim to have started it with #5000, starting it on a small scale using cold process will cost you between #100, 000 to #200, 000 or even more. But to start on the level i started, it will cost you from #2 million to over #5 million. All these depends on what you want and how you want to go about it.

That is to say, i had to plan first before taking off. Planning is very important in any thing you want to do. In the case of a business, you need a business plan. In planning for this business, I did a lot of market studies. I mapped out my market zone and my primary target market within the zone. My market studies took me even beyond my proposed market zone. So as we go down, we will discuss "my business plan" and make little references to it here and there.

Just get your raw materials, produce the soap using a wooden stick and a small plastic container in your house, when it sets you cut them into small sizes and display in your shop. Any thing outside that, you will definitely spend far above #5000. There is this local soap we call "ncha soda", those who do it don't spend anything less than #50 000 to start it. ...the raw materials, mixer and moulds, they spend above #50 000.

...and i bet you, you are not going to spend your time and #5000 to produce soap you will display in your shop when you can easily buy from other producers and still make relatively the same profit.

Did you brand the soap you produce? If yes, what are the challenges you've encountered so far regarding company registration, product trademark, NAFDAC, SON etc.

Also, did you rent the factory or you built the factory from the scratch? How much did it cost you to do this, get the machines and do all necessary registrations?

I'm seriously following this thread, i'm particularly interested in the discussion about your business plan. Although I have plans of going into production of something different (not soap), but I have no doubt I'll learn a lot from this thread.
