Hi Nairalanders,

I work as a Support Staff for a commercial bank, and I have witnessed this New Crime case twice this week alone!!!

This fraud usually occurs at the ATM galleries. An 18-year-old customer and another 'rich' adult customer were victims and now they have their BVN flagged for live and have cases to answer with the Police, and with their bank accounts on Post-No-Debit.

This is how it works;

1. You walk to an ATM and someone (fraudster) approaches you. The person may show you wads of cash and claim they have exceeded their withdrawal limit of 150k, and that they still need more cash. They then plead to make a money transfer into your own bank account so that you can withdraw it for them.

2. The TROUBLING thing in this seemingly harmless random act of kindness is that transfers are usually made from STOLEN PHONES or HACKED BANK ACCOUNTS!!!

3. The person who owns the bank account which the money transfer was initiated from would report to his bank, and the bank would send out a circular to the recipient's bank with instructions to be carried out - which usually includes freezing your own account, BVN flagging, and on most times an order for your apprehension.

4. The next thing you would discover is that the next time you try to use your ATM card to withdraw, your transactions will be unsuccessful.

5. You then go to your bank and you get the news. You will thank your stars if there's no MEMO to apprehend you and hand you over to the Police immediately - for something you surely don't know about. You may be advised to quickly go get a Police Report.

The 18-year-old boy was sent to withdraw money from his bank account by his Mom. On getting to the ATM, he was held at gun point by the fraudsters and the money transfer was made, money withdrawn, and he was released. The money here was 40k. The boy was advised to report himself to the Police, and he should follow up with the bank.

The adult customer was approached respectfully by a fraudster brandishing loads of cash. So, he felt at ease and 'helped', not knowing he had been exposed for flagging. Here, the amount of money involved was 50k. The customer who has about 1 million naira in his bank account has now been undone because of 50k he knows nothing about. Now, there's a MEMO to have the customer arrested anytime he steps into any of the bank branches.

Who knows if the stolen phones were acquired via One Chance armed robbers or the bank transfer details were supplied by Serial Hackers? This is a serious criminal issue.

Remember, if you have your BVN flagged, then you are so done with any legal financial dealings.

DO NOT HELP ANYBODY AT THE ATM!!! NOT EVEN AN OLD FRIEND, CHURCH MEMBER OR WHATSOEVER. SAY NO TO STRANGERS WHO APPROACH YOU FOR ANY TRANSFER FOR WITHDRAWAL AT THE ATM.

Imagine getting locked up over money you know nothing about other than helping someone to withdraw.

is it possible to still transfer money even when u have made ur maximum withdrawal for d day?

RapportNaija, kindly do justice to this question. It is a pertinent question.

Well, the sad truth is that if you're the shop owner, Naija Police will still make you pay for it.

So, instead of having a customer you don't trust transfer money to you, go to banks and get a POS.

If you're a small trader, POS wouldn't be ideal, so go for another payment collection method called mCash!

Most banks now offer these for small and medium scale bizs.

You open an account with the bank, probably for only biz, and then they set your account up for the payment collection platform. This mCash works like this;

1. The transaction cannot exceed 50k

2. You make the transaction via USSD on the customer's phone.

3. There are special codes for different banks, but the general one is *405#, and before the transaction is confirmed, the Customer would asked to input a security question like Date Of Birth

4. You get credited immediately, Customer gets debited

See cash biz centres like Paga now employ this platform - as a replacement for POS.

Whichever way, a fraudster may still be ABLE to bypass all these and get money spent on mCash platform. But, at least you can confirm to the Police that you sold goods, and in no way can confirm if the customer owns the bank account or not.

May God keep us away from harm's way.

YES. Online & USSD transactions, and ATM withdrawal have different limits, and you can even set it yourself with the bank.

Your online can be 1 million, USSD 200k, while ATM 150k.

what are the implications of this flagging?
would it affect only the implicated account (if the customer has several accounts, would only the implicated account be blocked?)

If your BVN is flagged, then all bank accounts on it would likely be affected. This is one major use of the BVN, to check fraudulent cases like this, no matter the number of Accounts.

The victims should prove their innocence in the bank and to the police and CCTV footage can help too even if police must chop something even when its clear the victims are innocent

These protective measures are not going to entirely help citizens... As people can do cash back at supermarkets and stores, being able to use your card at a supermarket to get the cash equivalent is not a bad idea and these bad developments will simply discourage cash back in Nigeria.. why are we quick to turn ideas that should help lift our standard of living into bad ventures, the whites have been doing cash back for ages with no much issues and in very little time since we where introduced to cashless facilities we have brought our own loopholes.
This will soon mean that everyone using ATM cards will have to support the ATM cards with some kind of national ID or passport at pos terminals in stores but will they not start making fake national IDs? This is the same thing happening at all the levels of our society from our citizens on grass root level to politicians and our government etc we have systems that work in this country but people find the loopholes and prioritize in explioting it instead of encouraging it and once the system is irritated by these exploits it becomes unbearable or unusable for our honest hard working and God fearing Nigerian.
I still believe in Nigeria greatly.

What about people that have online stores and sell products to random people, what then becomes our faith

I have personally received 60,000 before from an unknown person early in the morning around 6am only for the person to call back claiming it was a mistake and provided me with her account for a refund which I obliged.
What then would have been my faith if it was a stolen fund that hit my account

...........or if the customer outrightly makes a purchase with a stolen ATM card and credits my account

This is nonsense. I suppose there are security cameras at ATM points that should be used to verify the story of an innocent customer rather than victimize good Samaritans.

There is nothing like BVN flagging.... Lol.. BVN flagging only works on loan defaulters. That can't stop you from opening another account. You won't be given a loan if your BVN is being report as a defaulter in any financial institution.

BVN flagging on Loan defaulters? You meant bad credit report? Yes, bad credit report will not allow loan defaulters access loan anywhere in the country, but I put it to you that in the case of a fraudulent transaction, your BVN will be marked - and possibly with a MEMO to have you apprehended.
