Anyways, am a freelance in need of a system that can charge nd up for to 6hours daily. Just my laptop, a bulb, fan, phone... N maybe T.V (Am not a good fan of T.V but I intend using out with my system, it's 24inches.)
I stay in a area effete there's electricity from 2pm till 2pm the next day. Meaning that, on one day, I have at least 20 hours to charge up the system as I won't be needing it.
N from 2pm the next day, there will be no light till the next. I hope someone gets the explanation.

I feel happy to see my 2 years+ agm battery bank always at uniformed volt whilst charging and discharging . How do I know if batteries are of equal volt without day to day use of DC multimeters which can be stressful pending on battery rack type/design , thats the question most clients will ask me as am not really a fan of WiFi monitoring(which dosnt even entail individual batteries) neither do I really have extra time for that . I simply integrated a DC meter board to my system for easy individual battery monitoring purpose and its been doing its job i must say. This die-hard dc volt displays works 24hrs and don't fail easily . It gives one rest of mind and anybody in the house"even Madam or Ekaete" can easily view through what's happening amidst your inverter batteries .. The snapshot reading below displays uniformed volt whilst running an AC unit by past 12 midnite and sunny day whilst solar charging ! Who still doubt's if solar really works ? BASIC IDEAS ON POWER INVERTER SYSTEMS

What exactly is this dod i keep hearing?

DOD means depth of discharge . . the opposite of SOC which means state of charge . . simply put, it's how far you should discharge your batteries before recharging them. Typically, you shouldn't discharge below 50% to prolong your battery life. how do you know the DOD?
A full battery would typically be at 12.7 volts... once the battery hits 12.0V, that's 50% DOD. You should switch off and recharge, taking it below 12.0V will kill it faster.

Also, i use 1 ceiling fan, 1 55" tv, 1 laptop, 1 sound system, 2 white bulb.

A ceiling fan is typically 80W, a 55' TV if it's an OLED tv, should be around 125W, if it isn't led technology, can be as high as 300W
a laptop around 65W, sound system around 40W, 2 white bulb (CFL you mean: around 2 x 15w)
So rough calculation is: 80 + 125 + 65 + 40 + 30 = 340 (adding 10% losses 340 + 34 = 374W) almost 400 W
These are just estimates, if you would like to be more accurate, please check the ratings label on each appliance for a more specific power rating.

I need an inverter and good battery
I'm looking at getting 2 200ah batteries. Is that a good step?

Well, for 400 W or so, you skipped out one important part. How long do you want them online? 24/7, 10 hrs, 4hs, afternoon only, over night only. Without this info I cannot proceed. Let's just imagine you want all of them online at the same time for just 12hours per day.
400 W x 12h = 4800 Wh. Remember we cannot discharge batteries below 50% so we multiply by 2
4800 Wh x 2 = 9600 Wh and we multiply by 1.25 for efficiency sake = 12,000 Wh
So you would need at least 12,000 Wh divided by 200AH batteries = 60 then divided by 12V = 5 batteries
You can only connect 5 batteries in parallel (bad idea cos of too much current); so going series we have to add 1 more battery or drop one battery. to make either 4 or 6 batteries. 6 is better.
So to run 400W of load for 12 hours to 50% with peace of mind, you will need 6 units of 200Ah batteries.
A 1.5KVA inverter is golden here . . which will give you just about 1200 or less usable power. It's always a good idea not to load your inverter past 50%. You will only see a 1.5kva in 12 or 24 v . .
which means you will need to connect batteries at 2 series 2 parallel . . 2 x 2

You can either go cheap or very expensive . . depends on your pocket. Each one get the job done. The expensive ones adds more perks; more charging power and more peace of mind.

Ans: Gotv shouldn't be more than 15watts
0.8 x 12v x 18Ah = 172.8
20watts + 15watts = 35watts
172.8/35 = 4.937

Clear Elementary Tips on Battery Sizing

In a bank of 4pcs of 12V 200Ah connected in series. In series, the current flowing through the system is common but the voltage sums up, we derive 48V. Nevertheless, the power in Watt hour is the same as being connected in series
in parallel, Wh will be = 48v x 200Ah = 9600Wh
in series Wh will be = 12v x 800Ah = 9600Wh
so, if 1000W load is powered continuosly, we should have 9600/1000 = 9.6 hours of power supply to the above stated load.The discharge period will be short as the load increases, but can be maintained with further increase in the battery bank capacity.

Note: Remember safe 50% DOD golden rule !

Basics For Solar Enthusiasts


We have so many still confused after so many online awareness but i will need to put down few points here on my thread for newbies/prospective client's


Renewable energy is the best. This means one can enjoy theirs fully without dependence on phcn for grid supplies with crazy billing issues and also free from generator noise & regular maintenance stress

Advantages
• No electricity bills or reduced bills for hybrid designs.
• Compared to generator users, there is no fuel cost and stress of getting it and no fumes.
• People living in the remote locations where power is unavailable or too expensive to hook-up too can have electricity.
Just to mention but a few.

Without going into details, one can enjoy electricity by means of using solar energy (energy from the sun), wind mill (using energy from the wind). Don’t forget, where there is frequent electricity supply from the utility company, you can store some energy for back up.
You will need the following to complete a solar project or back up;
1. Solar panels(mono/poly)
2. Power Inverter(modified/puresine)
3. Charge controller(pwm/mppt)
4. Batteries to store energy(agm/gel/flooded)
5. wires and cables
6. Monitors/meters

The solar panel;
It consists of photo voltaic cells and these, covert the energy received from the sun to electricity in simple terms (this electricity is a direct current d.c). The panels can last up to 25 years plus. The panels can be fixed, adjustable or of the tracking type. You can decide to go for a complete panel from manufacturers (already made) or build panels by yourself using solar cells- the latter is for the hobbyist. The panels are rated in watts like 80w solar panel supplying 12v continuous at a given time.

The inverter;
Power Inverters are available in 3 basic designs, two of which I remember very well now – the one that out sinusoidal waves and those that are modified sign wave type (meaning not pure sine waves and do have limits when it comes to its application) . The power inverter converts your storage battery power into the 240 volts AC that runs your appliances. It is the heart of your solar energy system. Unless you only run 12 volt DC appliances you will need a power inverter to supply your AC. This is just the basics.

The Charge Controller;
A Charge Controller is necessary to protect the batteries from over charging and supply them with the proper amount of energy to promote long battery life.

Batteries;
Without Storage Batteries to store energy you would only have power when the sun was shining. There is a lot more to batteries than just the ordinary car battery. You may need to change batteries over the years depending on usage and battery quality.

Wires and Cables;
Without the right size of cables, you are likely to experience inefficient transfer of power (greater losses) and overheating.

Meters;
This is required to monitor the performance of your solar system.It is very necessary to know what gadgets you will be using (Tv, sat. receiver) and how long you would have them on the solar power and how much energy your battery can store and which solar panel (rating in power) will supply the required energy.

A lot goes into calculating the cost of setting up a solar system. First one has to consider the period of usable sunlight available at their location to do this calculation. For us here close to the equator, we get about 7 to 8 hours or more of sunlight during dry season, just a rough estimate.
How do I know I need 100w or 80w or 300 watts solar panel for my project?
The power consumption of appliances is given in Watts. To calculate the energy you will use over time, just multiply the power consumption by the hours of use.
Eg; If I have 90W tv set which I want to use for 6hrs, 25W satellite receiver for the same period, and a 50W fan for 3 hours. What will be the energy required from the solar panels for the period?

1. The energy for each appliance is Watts x time (hours) = Wh
So, the watt hours for the tv = 90 x 6 = 540 Wh (watt hours)
Watt ho
urs for sat. receiver = 25 x 6 = 150 Wh
Watt hours for fan will be = 50 x 3 = 150 Wh

2. Sum the watt hours for the individual appliances ie. 540 + 150 + 150 = 840 Wh (watt hours)
This means that the solar panel will need to supply 840 watt hours of energy to the battery each day to cover the total power required by these appliances.

3. Since there are bound to be losses in the system However, to account for natural losses, we multiply the result by 1.2 (this factor allows for natural system losses, assuming 85% efficiency). Therefore, we will assume the panels will actually need to be able to supply a total of
840 x 1.2 = 1008Wh

4. So, to supply 1008Wh of energy the panel we assume to receive 7 hours of sunlight will be rated at 1008 Wh / 7 h = 144W

Therefore, I will need 144W solar panel to supply energy to my appliances above at the given time.
Regarding point 3, it also means, if I have a solar panel rated at 100W receiving sunlight for 7 hours a day, the total energy supplied considering 85% efficiency will be 100x7x0.85= 595Wh and not 700Wh

5. Your battery should be able to store 1008Wh of energy. Since batteries capacities are rated in Ah (Ampere Hours) you need to multiply Ah by the Volt rating to know the Watt Hour. Power(W) = Voltage (V) x Current (I) ; Watt hour = VxIxHour
Therefore Ah (which is I x h) = Wh / V = 1008 / 12 (the number 12 represents a 12v battery)
= 84 Ah
So it means you will need not less than a 84Ah, 12V battery (deep-cycle batteries, not ordinary car batteries) to do the job.
NB. Another way of calculating battery capacity is explained in this example. Should my battery be rated at 84Ah, 12V the watt hour (energy) will be 84Ah x 12 V = 1008Ah
