The reason I advise on B.Y Mafit for GRE registration is not just because of the registration itself but the things that comes with it. Up to 2 months lectures, free Kaplan 2018 textbook hardcopy, Magoosh premium account, etc. There are other in house benefits for those who attend classes which are not listed as part of their general package. And the lectures... They have the best facilities for that based on general feedback.

Any lecturer will do, so far as they lectured you and can attest to your abilities.

Hello friends,

I am sorry I am just posting my GRE experience after a week. I have actually been on the road since then. Besides, on two occasions the anti-spam bot on Nairaland have banned me.I'll just summarize the whole stuff.

The test date was Monday, Aug 6th in JKK, Lagos - the same venue I wrote my TOEFL October last year. By 9:30, I was seated for the exam but niggling network issues prevented us from starting until around 11am. I was almost discombobulated since I was planning to travel back to Ilorin on that same day.

The AWA section was quite straightforward. I was surprised when I got the same question I was responding initially before the network issue for the Issue Task popped up the second time. The Argumentative Essay was a bit tough but I later spotted some flaws and fired on.

The pattern was VQVQ and V. In my opinion, the 2 Quant section were of the same difficulty level. I had to make like 2 guesses in the 1st Quant's. The 2nd Quant's was equally tough with some unfamiliar questions I never came across in all my preparation with Magoosh,Manhattan,Princeton Review and Official Guides. In short, I made like 3-4 guesses in the 2nd guesses. The 3rd Verbal section was very easy and I finished with some few minutes to spare. By the time I was completing it I was just eager to hit the "Report Scores" tab and be on the next bus heading home.
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by pronto543(m): 9:52am On Aug 14, 2018
... when I reported scores, I saw 155 and 160. I already anticipated the former was Verbal and the latter Quant's. On a closer look, my guess was right.

I sent my score to these schools:

1. UMBC
2. NCSU
3. TEMPLE
4. NEU

The other 4 I plan to apply to are

1. Purdue/UMass Amherst
2. Michigan Tech (free application)
3. Colarado Mines
4. USF

Here is a summary of my profile:

B.Eng Agric & Bioresources Engr (4.06/5.00)-Best Graduating Student
M.Sc Environmental.Engr (5.4/7.0)
GRE: 315
AWA: N/A. I expect at least 4/6
TOEFL:101
Publication: 1 (first author in an Int'l Journal). It was my M.Sc thesis together with my project supervisior
Work Experience: 1.5 yrs (teaching) - Not related to Ph.D program.

Intended course of study: Ph.D in Environmental Engineering.

Proposed Entry Term: 2019 Fall

For prospective test takers, endeavour to review and practice all the questions and concepts in the Official Guide. In my opinion, the best test material for Verbal are Official Guides. Others are Magoosh videos for the SC and RC. Manhattan 5lb RC passages are very close to the topics you will likely come across in the RC on the test day.

For AWA, I recommend following the Kaplan template. Also, review the sample essays in the Official Guide to understand what the graders place emphasis on.

For the Quant's, there is no single book that can perfectly simulate ets questions in term of verisimilitude and difficulty. I believe ets are beginning to reinvent themselves. However, I would recommend Manhattan 5lb as it will help raise your level unlike Barrons or Kaplan that will give you a false sense of security. I was scoring in the range of 165-168 with Kaplan and Barrons. With Manhattan, my Quant's score was in the range of 163-165 after some months of intense practice. So I know what I'm saying when I say Manhattan will raise your level and awareness to avoiding trap answers. Magoosh videos are also good...I.watched the videos like 2-3 times over again.

Also, on the test date, use your scratch paper wisely. I mean solve systematically and neatly so that you can refer to a question in case you couldn't complete it or you need to review it. This strategy helped me on 2 questions which I had to come back to later on. I just carried on from where I stopped solving.

Finally, I would like to thank our patrons on this thread and everyone that has kept this thread alive. I must admit that I got all the prep materials I used from this group. For prospective test takers, you need to devote time and ferret out the materials. I come across this thread sometimes around May last year. On that fateful night while I laid on my bed worried about acing the GRE, I typed "how to score high on GRE" and eureka I came across this wonder and life changing group. Throughout that week, I was glues to my phone and PC reading all the comments from page one to the end. I downloaded.all the materials including the Magoosh videos (~1.2GB), Manhattan 8 series and 5lb book,Nova Bible and Official Guides and all other material I felt I needed. On my next trip to UI, I printed all the books costing me about 15k at that time since it is cheaper printing around campus. The books filled an A4 carton. In retrospect, I must say it was money well spent.

They were tougher than what is in the Manhattan 8-book series. Only Magoosh's Quants and verbal sections were comparable. Never had issues with TC and SE, so was always using ETS Big Book RC compilation with timing to improve RCs - it worked like magic, those practice questions were of the same level as the real test itself.

Cheers.

That was a very good observation. It is unfortunate that students - undergraduate, M.Sc and even Ph.D - find ourselves in this 'Referee issh'.
From my observation, reference letters, arguably in some situations, carries much weight than GRE itself in application packet. But, some lecturers are either not apt in writing or 'too busy' or don't even understand the implication of the letters. If you see the letters some lecturer writes, uhmmmmm .....It took me days to get a checklist assessed for a sound reference letter (available if you need a copy).

Possible Solution.
1. As an applicant, get a sample copy of a good reference letter and revamp it aptly.
2. Do not just pick Prof. as your referee, ask for their availability to assist before filling their names on your application (some schools may not alter it)
3. After persistent call and no response, take a time and travel down to meet the Prof. (remembering 'if Muhammed story ....) with your laptop, modem or a phone with hotspot.
4. If none works, make a request to the school for a change on your application.

As regards using 'fabricated e-mail account', it may be difficult because those schools might be aware of that possibility and some may even require official e-mail e.g successg@oau.edu. I believe those tips would yield a good response

ciao.

Recently, a friend told me about funding in US university for international students which I was ignorant about, though I have been searching for such for a while now. Missed out on African Institute for Mathematical Science last year, re-applied this year and not gotten any response yet. To cut the long story short, I just need advice on how to go about schools I can pick and some other tangible information that would be beneficial.

CGPA : 4.56/5.0
Degree: BSc
Course: Mathematics
Thesis: Semi-analytic Solution of Magnetohydrodynamic Flow of a Third Grade Fluid through a Porous Medium( My supervisor promised to publish it as a local journal but I doubt if he did cos it's like 2yrs now)
My research interest is Financial Mathematics..
Pls I need help on schools to look out for, when would be advisable to take GRE and all

You have a good GPA. I really admire those who studied Mathematics. Do you have any research experience aside your UG thesis ?

Aside that, why financial Mathematics? From your thesis , you have gained understanding of Applied Mathematics- Fluid Mechanics. That alone is a unique selling point.

I may be wrong but Applied Mathematics research is more likely to be funded than Finanical Mathematics. I have seen more funding in that area than even some core engineering disciplines. Also, you can partake in interdisciplinary research which is highly rewarding.

It is your choice to make nevertheless. Mathematics is well funded so you just need to search more.

What's your GRE score ? Your Quant score should show that Maths is your forte. With that, I don't see anything stopping you from getting your heart desire.

I believe those tips would yield a good response

ciao.
i have been thinking about this lately myself .
what would one do if his lecturers don't have an official email address ?

Canadian MSc acceptance is as difficult if not more than US'. However it is easier to acquire a US visa and it is less time-consuming.

Ease of work is basically the same but Canada might be more accommodating in that regard. But without a doubt US has far more funding opportunities than Canada especially if one considers the direct PhD route.
I'm confused ,you saying us visa is easier to than Canadian study permit ? do you have any data to substantiate this ?
for some reason I thought Canadian study permit was easier and us visa is hard ( relatively ) .
to the contrary ,admission to us schools is easier and Canadian schools are more strict and hard to get into .
just a thought though

No I don't have.. Not taken GRE yet but planning to take it the moment I'm able to get sufficient information cos I wouldn't wanna leap before looking.. I really don't have much interest in fluid dynamic, but more interest in applying different mathematical models to businesses, to health and d likes...
Thanks for your quick response sire...

Like other have said, you are in the right place and should endeavor to read previous pages. Reading from page 1 is not too much of a ask.

You should look to write GRE BY Nov to meet the deadline of December 15th for some schools. 3 months is enough for adequate preparation if you are not too busy with work and other things. You should aim for minimum of 160 in your Quant. You should also be prepared to write TOEFL.

Finding the right schools for you is one of the most crucial aspects of the application process and it is a task best undertaken by you. So, start researching. The good thing is that Mathematics is well funded at PhD level and to a lesser extent for Masters.

Here is a link to graduate mathematics ranking.

Visit the website of individual schools to find ones with program/research in your area of interest and in which your application will be competitive.
