Yes it is ....there are courses related to quality control ,not all safety course is related to construction,take your time and go through the options you have ,you ll find the ones that most suits your field .in most organizations it is HSEQ (HSE and Q and in thesame department )

Pls I'm about to do a career change. I want to veer towards(1) lecturing(2)safety/environmental scientist.
Which of these M.sc options will you advise I take:

Environmental pollution and control, (2)environmental quality and mgt, (3) environmental toxicology (4) health, environment safety and security (5) petroleum and environmental microbiology.

Will an msc in the above mentioned courses suffice or I will still need to go for nebosh?
Pls someone with experience should kindly advice.

You don't even need that basic....if you can pass Nebosh,go right ahead with it. ...ispon is better,novelle too is but if you do anywhere ,you still have to go pay and register with ispon..

Just follow your heart,but I ll choose ispon ,so you can save yourself from plenty questions when u go for induction

Support the development of OHS policies and programs

Please permit the long post we will make on this matter. Currently, it is a reoccurring matter in many organizations where Engineers are being ignorantly haughty about being the people destined to be HSE professionals, claiming they know better.

No, you don't necessarily need to be an Engineer. Listen, don't let engineers fool you with all that crap. I am an Engineer at an MSc Level. Please what is the definition of Engineering? It is application of physical and other science principles to manipulate materials and forces of nature to the benefit of man. That a few people decided to call their discipline engineering is just human edification of certain disciplines.

There are other disciplines that in their own right should be called engineering. And as academia develops, new engineering disciplines are borne. Systems Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Waste Water Engineering, Safety/HSE Engineering etc.

What you really need in HSE is a knowledge in physical sciences, mental sciences and social sciences. Yes, the HSE Discipline is that broad. Very broad. And Engineers cannot lay claim to having all this knowledge. Your Mathematics, Physics , Chemistry and Biology and then some knowledge in Physiology and Human Psychology. Based on our experiences, being vast in these areas gives you added advantage in HSE Sciences. It is only added advantage. If you are interested you can also train yourself online to be as good as any engineer. Gone are the days when we learn through the old means.

It is this advantage of being grounded in Physical Sciences especially Physics,Chemistry and Maths/Statistics, that Engineers have, which gives them the edge. It is like being tall and being a basketballer. It doesn't mean short people aren't good at basketball. But being tall is an advantage. This advantage means engineers can go very deep into the profession and specialize in very deep areas.

The problem we have found with non physical science background HSE professionals is that they can't go deep into the Profession. The moment it goes beyond slips, trips and falls they get confused with all the calculations and etc. However, It doesn't mean someone who studied management sciences can't be a HSE Professional. The person only needs to be serious and learn the principles again. It will take some hard work. It will might be difficult, but if the person is determined, the person will go far.

So, what we should be interested in is someone with a good Physical Science, Mental Science and Social Science Background and not simply saying "Engineers". In Nigeria, engineering it is one of the few disciplines that still rely on expatriate input to get things done. Accountants, teachers , lawyers, etc are all being run and supervised by Nigerians. Till date Engineers most often than not, have a white man monitoring them.

Remember finally that it is HSE. Health, Safety and Environment. In other areas it is CASHESQ. Community Affairs, Safety, Health, Environment and Quality. No Engineer can lay claim to knowing all these so well because he or she was taught all these in school. None! I challenge any engineer to bring his/her curriculum.

So go ahead and chase your area of interest. Good luck.

Because I am thinking of doing my hse1-3 with novelle and later register to be a member of ispon cos the price of novelle is quite cheap and affordable.....

I called a number I got from www.Ispon.org and I was told that Ghse is 45,000 and HSE level 3 is 25,000. Only for me to get to the Lagos address on that same website I was told that the people I called are fake. I was given another website www.Ispon.gov.ng, i was told that Ghse is 55,000 and Hse level is another 55,000 that is a total of N110,000.
Please why all these differences which one is real and which is fake.

For people who equally want to run the HSE program please make proper enquiries o. One cannot afford to loose money any how in this our country.
