United Nations Children Education Fund, UNICEF, has said 69 percent of children without access to basic education in Nigeria were from the northern partof the country. UNICEF Education Specialist, Azuka Menkiti, who stated this while speaking at a two-day media dialogue in Kano yesterday, attributed the development to some obsolete cultural practices and religious misinterpretations in the region. According to him, the obsolete cultural practices and religious misinterpretations are also responsible for increased poverty in northern Nigeria.

Menkiti also noted that 69 percent of children without access to education in Nigeria were found in streets of northern Nigeria, with North East states leading and North West states trailing behind. To this end,UNICEF charged political, traditional and community leaders in the region to put more effort to change the statistics as regards number of children without education She said: “Few weeks ago, we held an education conference in Kaduna and it impressed traditional, community and religious leaders. “Stakeholders that participated in the meeting signed a commitment to join forces with government and global partners to pull children out of the streets and return them to school so as to secure a peaceful and productive posterity. “We don’t insist on formal education. It could be Koranic education. But it will be more profitable if they combined both Koranic and formal education. Records indicated that about 9.5 million school age children in Nigeria are currently enrolled Koranic schools across Nigeria but only 24 percent of them combine both formal and Koranic education.” Recall that the Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education Commission ,UBEC, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, recently disclosed that the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria had increased from the 10.5 million it stood before to 13.2 million.

The increase in the figure ,he said, could be attributable to increased attacks and destruction of educational facilities in communities in some North East states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. Speaking also at the event, Head of Child Right Information Bureau,CRIB, in the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Olumide Osayinpeju, said the essence of the media dialogue was to draw attention to implications of uneducated posterity. “Evidence exists that increased investment in education and protection of the vulnerable citizens, in this case children, and addressing inequality would ensure sustained growth and stability in Nigeria. “We heed to integrate children, especially those in difficult terrain and other excluded children and ensure equitable distribution of education resources,”she said.

Nigeria and indeed the North is sitting on a time bomb because of (hundred of thousands) uneducated children roaming the street in rags and begging for food instead of being in the school learning.

These children are being deceived by religious and the elites who manipulate them for their selfish gain.

This same religion that is used to empoverished these children is same one practiced in Morocco, Saudi, Iran,Kuwait, yet you won't find children roaming the streets during school hours.

Western education librates the mind, gives you sense of direction and a partway in life.....a situation the Northern religious and political leaders will never allow.

The sooner the North realizes it's its own problem the better. And the solution is not in the Niger Delta oils. Maybe perhaps if the groundout pyramids can return in conjunction with heavy investment in ICT.

Northerners are usually good in subjects that requires craming ( the result of early Islamic classes enrollment) like medicine and mathematics, hence computer science. Build on those strengths.

Also implement the provision already existing that you can't marry extra wives with no proven source of income to cater for them and multiply kids who only end up in the almajiri system.

Inculcate western education to the already existing Islamic education schools. You shouldn't have most of the country's Presidents from your region and some of the richest people in the world only to be returning the lowest levels of education in the world.

The rate of illiteracy in the north is alarming. People there go into marriage without proper planning for the children apart from shipping them into various states to do shoe shining and packing of refuse.

Their youths don't contribute any meaningful thing to their immediate environments. They don't take part in weekly or monthly sanitations, they don't develop any place of their abode, they don't rent house or build one etc. everything about them is archaic.

Before you quote me, check Northern youths in your immediate environments.

Ur assertions would be perfect for the region. But it'll never happen in the North unless all their elites are eliminated from the region.

Though not obvious to them is that their elites are the biggest stumbling blocks to d development of their region. Their population n lack of education is besically to the advantage of them political elites.

Them leaders are so eager for power but has not really used it to educate, develope n help the region.

U can imagine that Katsina has produced president/HOS 3times yet it's still has 75% of her people under poverty.

Or how do u explain Tambuwal abandoning 2nd term as governor to pursue presidency in a state with over 80% poverty rate. If he's educated n successful, why can't he settle n concentrate on elevating her people out of poverty. What order task is better than that

Isn't it appalling that some of their leaders including PMB were accommodating n sympathetic to Boko Haram during the last administration. A group that discouraged Western education, an only means for them people to escape Poverty. Meanwhile their religious mentors in Saudi n middle East are sending their wards to the best of schools in the west. Then have them come back to develop their countries.

How do u explain Zamfara( with population of 5m) just having about 200 students in total for neco in a yr with a passing rate of just 24/100. Meanwhile other states are having over 200,000 for same exam. Only for their former Gov to marry a minor young enough to be his granddaughter, divorced her shortly n is ready to die in d Senate in defence of child marriage. Whitout regards to her education n progration in life.

When I look at them political leaders I just wonder what sacrifice have any of them gone tru inorder to educate their people really.
How can any true n selfless leader be more interested in his people having PVC than having good education

Yeah illiteracy n poverty is in all parts of nigeria but it's worse off in d North. Their political leaders have no reason whatsoever to be flamboyant but to humbly calm down n work assiduously in eliminating illiteracy n poverty.

These Conditions, people and Children in Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Katsina, especially Greater Daura and the NE generally are HUMAN IMPORTS from Niger, Chad and The Cameroon Republics.
All these uneducated and poor humans you see in the North, all have NIN and their IDs are very well coded in the Card Register which INEC promised to use 1/1/19.
This Report is therefore a plot to plan for the Education, Economy and Social Wellfare of these criminal IMPORTS from Nigeria's wasting resources and looted Funds recovered.

Of course we know.......

But they never see it as a big problem.

Even those supposedly with education can't read or write, yet, the like of Ganduje line them up along a street with stomach-turning placards.

The North needs a Paradigm Shift when it comes to education.

The elites know once a man has food he will seek knowledge in this information age. They prefer to have more poor mouths and keep using them as a bargaining tool in Abuja for better allocation.

They will soon come out with doctrines to brainwash their masses ( via Imams ) that there is money at the center but once they get that money they shut the mouths of the Imams with pilgrimage trips and others. They occasionally shut the mouths of followers with salah perks.

Well she couldn't have said it better...

Unfortunately during election they mobilise themselves destroying erected buildings, burning places of worship, looting non indigen properties, causing mehem all over the places. After election, new buildings would be erected there by budgeting like 100% spending less than 30%...You all wonder why they remain stagnant without moving any inch forward...

You all remember sanusi lamido echoed the same thing before the elite decided to shut him up.

The poor literacy level in Nigeria is the reason why the illiterate voting population has more say to who wins elections. Until we have a higher literate Class than the illiterates, voting capable leaders would be difficult. Meanwhile, the wealthy Northern leaders have chosen to keep their people in bondage and use it as their weapon to parade themselves as Saviour and Lord. They are the ones to blame for the educational backwardness of their people.

We can only hope that targeted efforts by well meaning Nigerians, Non-governmental bodies and technology can help give a life line to communities that are educationally disadvantaged.
