This is actually more than emotional voting. By voting for the dead Republican, the seat will safely remain in that party because the Republican governor will appoint another party faithful to represent the state until a special election can be organized.

This will give the Republicans a big advantage in the said special election.

The poeple did not vote the dead; they voted for the Republican party knowing fully well that the party will nominate someone else as it's flag bearer after the election.
