"IT'S BEEN almost a week now, boss," Faruk heard Mamba's voice speaking somewhere nearby. He had been kept prisoner in a small dark room with no openings except for a reinforced metal door. He was fed once a day, just enough to keep him alive. Footsteps approached. They stopped in front of the door, the sound of keys jingling. The door was opened and Mamba stepped in with his usual arrogant stride. He was wearing a suit, business as usual.
"The boss wants to speak to you," he said to Faruk, holding out the phone. "It's on speaker."
Faruk said nothing.
"Hello friend," David's voice boomed. "Enjoying your stay in Lagos?" He chuckled.
Faruk felt too weak to talk, he simply listened.
"I see you are in a difficult situation," David continued. "I'll ensure our buddy Mamba -remember him?- keeps you company." He exhaled. "When the time is right, you will deliver my package to the minister. Mamba?"
Mamba cut the line then proceeded outside. Moments later the lights of Faruk's prison flicked on. Then Mamba was back, wearing just the suit trousers; topless. Faruk got the message but was far too weak and too slow to do anything about it as Mamba manhandled him to his feet and sent a pounding right fist to his abdomen, winding Faruk to the core.
"I should have buried you when I had the chance," Faruk managed to utter amid grasps. "You cocky bastard!"
Mamba said nothing. But the pummeling continued for the rest of the evening until Faruk lost consciousness.

JAMAL ARRIVED at the cave at dawn. The surrounding area smelt of burnt wood with some trees still burning. The cave was all but hidden now, conspicuous at first sight. He entered and made his way towards the back, where he had fought the elder and Fujikashi. The room couldn't be accessed as rocks had fallen from the roof, a cave in. He was in the process of gathering an energy blast when he heard voices, footsteps approaching. There was nowhere to hide. The only way was back or to the inner cave. Three figures appeared, each holding flashlights. They were all dressed in black military outfits with gasmasks on their faces, weapons trained in front of them. Jamal pulled on his hood and prepared himself to battle. As they came closer, their flashlights all fell on him. They paused at the same time. One of them raised a hand.
"What business do you have here?" He asked.
Jamal didn't reply.
They also didn't waste time in firing at his direction, rifle fire and report filling the pathway.
Jamal's left hand engulfed in red energy and he dashed at the one on the right. The punch sent him tumbling back down the passage, unconscious. One of the remaining two lunged carelessly at Jamal, only to receive a shock of blue energy, roasting him inside out.
The last one stood still. He dropped his rifle on the floor. Jamal dropped the roasted corpse aside. Gap between himself and the last opponent: 5 metres.
****************
CHRIS STUDIED his opponent through the night vision gasmask. Rifles were useless on him. So he pulled out his handgun, standard issue except that it was loaded with hollow bullets, increasing fatality to it's victims. This opponent was a tough one. He made quick work of Eric and permanently disposed of the new guy, Diego. So much for 'the best'.
The opponent surged forward, leaving a trail of blue flames in his wake. All Chris could see was a blurry object moving in a zigzag pattern around him. But a blur is good enough for him. He followed the blur with his gun and fired as soon as he saw the kind of red flames that hit Eric. This slowed the opponent down.
**********
JAMAL WAS taken aback by the opponent's tactics: he only fired a shot when Jamal was ready to attack or came close to him.
Knowing speed wasn't going to win this fight, Jamal stopped. He'll do this the direct way. He used the flash speed to close the gap between them.
*********
CHRIS SAW the opponent flash straight towards him. As soon as he was close enough, Chris pulled out his dagger in a horizontal slash. He missed the face by millimeters. He followed it up with a kick but was easily parried. The enemy caught him by the neck, spun him and hit him in the opposite wall. He was concrete strong, Chris thought. The bulletproof vest he wore absorbed the impact but he still felt a sharp pain on his side.
Chris sat with his back against the wall, he was getting exhausted. The opponent walked slowly towards him.
"Who are you?" Chris coughed. Again, no reply.
The opponent simply engulfed his hands in a red flame. He raised his hand and stabbed it in Chris' direction.

JAMAL WAS about to land a fatal blow on his opponent when a loud bang came from the entrance of the cave, behind him. He raised a protection shield just in time to deflect a huge proton blast, but the force was enough to thrust him into the opposing wall, breaking it, and falling outside. He had no doubt about who his attacker was: Katrina. She had taken possession of her father's staff. He could now hear her shouting instructions from somewhere nearby. They appeared at the entrance of the cave, one carrying his injured teammate while Katrina led the way, staff in hand. She even donned the white overflowing garbs her father had worn during his reign.
Jamal quickly rose to his feet as they approached. He could feel the stinging pain in his upper back area. But he ignored that. He wrapped his right hand in red-hot energy. He saw the top of the staff also engulf in flames.
A low buzzing sound, not more than that of a fly, behind Jamal.
Apparently, Katrina could hear it too. With a smirk on her face, she turned on her heels, grabbed the two guys in black in one hand and with the other, raised the staff to the sky. As she did so, one of the guys dropped something on the ground. They disappeared in a burst of pale blue speed.
The buzzing became a whistle. Jamal saw the source but his reactions were far too slow for a missile moving at supersonic speed. He quickly realized the object dropped was in fact a target for he heat-seeking missile. Jamal could only watch as the missile travelled over his head and made contact with the object.
An earthshaking explosion followed, destroying anything within a 500 metre radius.
"That's for my father," Katrina whispered as the helicopter lifted them out of the forest. All she could see was a blazing fire. Another explosion as the explosives they planted in the cave also got off. She couldn't help a raucous laughter. A mixed feeling of victory and pride blanketed her.
In all her elation, she missed a small red glow that stood in the middle of the huge fire. It grew as the fire died down. And by the time the helicopter was across Japan, the glow had enclosed the fire in a sphere.
Jamal watched the sphere compress the fire until it was a small ball in his palm, the size of a lemon. Then it burst into a splash of proton energy.
***
IF ANY security agency had -not listened to the Japanese government and- adjusted their satellites in the direction of an explosion that occurred in the Japanese forest that day, they could have easily seen that after the huge explosion was compressed, a black flame raced across the surrounding area.
Jamal had accepted his destiny as a ghost and unlocked his true potential, his true powers.

"I WILL not kill him yet," General David said as he puffed his cigar, "until it's time."
"Time for what?" Kelvin, seated opposite his father for the first time in years, said.
David looked at his son. "Until it's time I say he dies."
Kelvin shrugged, "then what? He has useful information."
"What kind of information?"
"Ghosts. Faruk knows them."
David took a drag from his cigar before stuffing it in the ash tray. He faced Kelvin squarely. "That's not my fight, son."
"Well, DAD," Kelvin replied, "the ghosts are going after something called Torpedo. I can be used to power people up. Beyond imagination."
"Yeah," David said sarcastically. "And that's exactly why it should stay buried."
"Think about it," Kelvin pressed. "You are inches away from possessing the most wanted and dangerous weapon in human history and you're just walking away from it? You'll become a… billionaire overnight."
David stared at the table between them for a while. When he raised his head to talk, there was conviction in his face. "What should we do?"

CHRIS LED Eric and the new girl into the underground building. Eric was busy nursing a concussion while the lady moved like she owned the whole damned world. Chris cursed silently. This was supposed to be a ten-fifteen minute walk. He checked his watch: 0036 hrs. Twenty minutes.
Five more minutes later they were in the noisy clearing and heading directly to the back. The same man that sent them on a mission was standing exactly where they left him days ago. He was staring at the huge monitor on the wall which displayed maps of sorts.
"Where's Diego?" He asked grimly with his back to them.
Chris shook his head. "Dead from the start."
The man turned around and immediately went down on one knee, bowing his head. "I'm sorry for your loss, Katrina," he said.
Chris looked around and saw everybody going on one knee. He joined. The lady called Katrina, head held high, stepped forward.
"It's been a sad couple of days for our society," she said. "But today I announce the beginning of a new era for us." She raised a hand in the air. "My father preferred we stay hidden from the world like our names imply. But I order that we come out and show our dominance to the universe. We have nothing to fear anymore!"
"What about the Peacemakers?" Someone asked from the back.
Katrina laughed. "They have been terminated."
"The elders will be here shortly, my queen," the mission leader said.
"I love the sound of that."

Re: The Torpedo by Nobody: 6:20pm On Nov 07, 2018
JAMAL ADJUSTED his backpack and knocked at the wooden door. He hoped the address was correct. The area was located in the Den, the dirtiest part of Sanka. The building was one of many dilapidated buildings in the street.
After arriving in Nigeria the previous day, Jamal wasted no time in tracking down the location where his ghost journey started. He could vividly remember the surrounding but the details seemed sketchy now.
Movement inside the house, feet shuffling. A man opened the door by a crack. "Yes?" he said harshly.
Jamal immediately recognized the man as the same man who led him into a tunnel and linked him with Samad. "Do you remember me?"
The man shook his head no. "Please, I want to be left alone."
"I'm Jamal," Jamal said, extending a hand.
The man, still suspicious, opened the door wider and extended a hand. His mistake.
As soon as their hands made contact, Jamal sent a small electron charge into the man. He fell on the floor, unconscious. Jamal looked around, made sure nobody saw them, then stepped in -pulling the body along- and closed the door.
The small room smelt of dirty laundry and something burning in the kitchen. Someone was in the backyard area, Jamal saw a figure move. He moved quietly towards the kitchen then the backyard door. He saw an Asian man dressed in a vest and shorts, smoking. As soon as he saw Jamal, he moved. He was fast. Jamal grabbed the punch and threw the man into the kitchen. "There's no need for a fight, Aido," Jamal said.
The man looked perplexed at hearing his name. "Who are you?"
"It doesn't matter," Jamal said with a straight face. Evening was fast approaching and the sky rumbled. "We're the last Peacemakers left." Jamal walked past the man and into the sitting room, where the unconscious man lay. He touched the man's neck. "I know you don't want your identity exposed, that's why I had to knock him unconscious."
Aido appeared beside Jamal. He pressed a katana blade to the stranger's neck. The man looked unfazed. He stood up and faced Aido. 6 feet, short crop hair, olive skin, sharp eyes, beard covering the bottom half of his face. He wore a simple T-shirt and jogging trousers with running shoes.
"There's only one person that called me by my name: my master," Aido said carefully. "You'll do well to tell me who you are."
Jamal had no time for this. Black energy bubbles started to fill the room. "If I was an enemy, I'll have acted like one."
Aido saw the stranger's eyes disappear behind black violent energy waves. He lowered his sword. "You have my master's powers? How can that be?"
"Shin was like a teacher to me," Jamal said. He noticed the man on the floor was starting to come back to consciousness. "Let's leave it at that."
"Stand down, Benjamin," Aido said. "He's one of us."
Benjamin stood up, grunting. "I know. I can smell it."
"What do you mean 'smell it'?" Jamal faced Benjamin.
Aido chuckled from behind. "This is Benjamin, our tracker. He can spot enemies from a mile. Like a wolf."
Benjamin waved, "spare me the sarcasm, Michael. I can only smell certain kind of signatures in the air."
Jamal nodded. "Good. Because we need all the help we can get." He walked to the window. It was just past 7 but the lack of electricity supply in the Den made it seem like it was 10 p.m. "The Monarchs have mobilized. I don't know exactly what their plans are but they are proceeding to the next step."
"Then we throw a wrench on their plans," Aido said. "Make them know we're still in the fight."
"For now, we get prepared," Jamal announced. "They think the Peacemakers have been cleared out."
"We're planning to leave it at that, right?" Benjamin said. "Element of surprise?"
Jamal moved away from the window.
The next few days would spent planning and gathering information and weapons.

CHRIS STARED at Katrina, who sat opposite him. Her hair shone -along with her white dinner dress- under the illumination of the 5-star restaurant they shared a table in.
"Heart out for your loss," he said.
She ignored the sympathy.
"My fathers death was a necessary occurrence."
A train passed somewhere nearby, filling the night with it's thundering boom.
"But still…" Chris trailed. He had just seen something: a red light. Laser. "Get down!" He yelled, pulling Katrina to the tiled floor just in time. The shot shattered the wine bottle on the table.
All of a sudden, the restaurant was filled with commotion, people running for the door. Chris realized the shooter used the train to hide the sound of his shot. Cursing under his breath, he looked around. Straight ahead, a huge window overlooked the street but no bullet holes on it.
"We have to go," he said, half-dragging Katrina by the hand.
**
Kelvin listened, phone pressed to his left ear. He paced impatiently around the office.
"I can't believe you missed," he said coldly. He looked towards his fathers direction, who looked like he's seen a ghost. "Take them, alive." He hung up.
"They failed?" David asked.
Kelvin shook his head, banging a fist on the table. "Your f*cking staff can't get a job done."
David was silent. He was more worried about the implications of the miss than the incompetence of his guards. He decided to voice his concern. "If the bullet gets tracked?"
"It won't," Kelvin said, still doting over his phone.
"Where did you say you got your info from?" David was now looking apprehensive and sweating profusely under the air-conditioning.
Kelvin gave him a look for a moment. "I sniffed it off the link we got from Faruk."
"If this all comes crashing down," David threatened, "it's on you, son."
"And if it doesn't?" Kelvin was getting agitated with his father's rubbish talking. "What happens, dad? You take all the credit?"
David lit his cigar.

FROM HIS position at the top of a skyscraper near Alpha Restaurant, Jamal could see Katrina rushing outside. She was being dragged by someone. Jamal couldn't see the face but could identify the physique as the same man he met with at the cave in Japan. Ever since he activated his new powers, Jamal could see just as well in the dark as he might in light. And his brain power was immense. He surveyed his surroundings, looking for the oddity.
Surely enough, just behind the restaurant, a man dressed as a waiter exited the building. He rushed to a parked car with tinted windows. Choice to make: should he track the shooter, seeing that he might be able to gather more information or maybe even make an ally? Or should he follow Katrina? Making up his mind, Jamal jumped off the building, diving head first. Then burst into pieces of dark energy.
Jamal found out that he could save enough dark energy to make his body synchronize with the violent atoms of the black energy, therefore temporarily granting his body the same properties.
In no time at all, he was hovering above the car. Integrating his body back to normal, he landed near the rear-right passenger door -where the man entered- and punched the window. He grabbed the man by the scruff of the neck and dragged him out. Before the rest could react, Jamal had gathered dark energy again and flew off.

"PLEASE," FARUK said weakly. "I've told you guys everything." His body was shutting down after the three-day starvation. He rested his back on the wall of his dark cell. Mosquitoes buzzed in a dark corner nearby. He had heard Mamba tell someone on the phone how he had to spend a lot of time catching and storing mosquitoes for 'recreational purposes'. Mamba had probably unleashed the tiny killers into the window. Faruk had nothing to cover himself with and his shirt was torn from the daily visits paid to him by Mamba. The pummeling had worn him down. There's nothing Faruk wouldn't give -or say- to earn his freedom back. Or at least, a swift death.
Banging on the door. A teenage girl opened the small rectangular opening on the door near the floor and dropped a plate of food. Like a starving refugee, Faruk jumped at it, swallowing down the watery eba like his life depended on it. Well, it did.
"Thank you," Faruk breathed. The girl pushed a bottle of water which he collected.
"Off you go now," Mamba commanded. He reached the door and pushed it open. "You've eaten to your fill, yes?"
Faruk shook his head weakly. "Name your price. Anything. Just please…please, help me."
Mamba's thunderous laughter was enough of an answer. "What, Faruk? Tired of my company?" He paused for a while. "Perhaps I should introduce you to the dogs. You know what they say, 'a dog's a man's best friend'."
Faruk felt his stomach tumble. The German Shepherd Mamba owned was rumoured to be a man-eater. "Y-y-you can't kill me. David-"
"David wants you alive," Mamba interjection. "Not healthy."
The teenage girl listened as thuds after thuds came from the room holding the tattered man. He could shout all he wanted, but the building was designed for those kind of things; it was soundproof.
Soon after, the sounds died down and Mamba stepped out. He looked at her softly. "Go get me some water, would you?"
She nodded sharply, but couldn't help taking a second glance at this man. She had hoped one day he would teach her his job so they might be doing it together, and she'll spend more time with him.

"COULD IT have been that demon you met in the cave?" The stubby man, Tukur, asked Chris. He quickly added, "I know what he looks like."
"It's unlike him. He doesn't use weapons and he is a close-range fighter," Chris replied.
"It could be that maybe he's decided to go long?" Tukur insinuated. Chris gave him a poisonous look.
"Are you trying to say I don't know what I'm saying? He's a bloody wrench in plans."
"No offense, kid," Tukur continued, "but I still can't believe YOU faced him while Diego was killed instantly by him."
Chris reached into his suit jacket, for his gun.
"Enough," Katrina said. "Chris, a minute?"
Chris followed her to her luxurious quarters located deeper into the hideout.
"I have you to thank for saving my life," she said. "Again."
"No pros, my queen," Chris bowed. "A damsel is in distress, I'm at her service."
"Oh," she said, then turned her back to him. "This dress is being difficult, could you help? Or you don't know how?"
Chris moved closer, "of course I do." He landed feather kisses around her shoulder and neck.
"What are you doing?" she whispered.
"Saving your life," he said. "Again."
**************
"MY EMPLOYER?" the man, still dressed in a waiter's clothing, asked. He looked confusedly at the three people hovering around him in the dimly lit room. He was tied to a wooden chair. "I don't know what you are talking about."
The Asian looking man scoffed, "bullsh*t!" He spat. "Give us something concrete before we start pulling off some teeth."
"I-I swear," the waiter stammered.
"We all know you are lying," the one with olive skin, dressed in a black cloak, said. His voice was low but had an edge of coldness to it. "It's no coincidence that you happened to be in the right place at the right time. And you are more than what you claim to be. How did you know to cover your shot with the train?"
The waiter was about to argue his case when a gruelling punch landed on his face. He certainly felt a few teeth shake, tasting blood in his mouth. The third guy was in his face now, his dark features hidden in the dark room. "We don't have time for games," he yelled. "You are stalling!"
Just a few more seconds, the waiter thought. If he can twist his hand a bit more the rope would give out and he'll make a bolt for the door.
"Please," he said. "Please." The rope was almost off now.
It gave way. He jumped, charged into the Asian man, and made for the door. He was inches away from turning the knob when he felt something hot around his neck. He stiffened and had to look down to see it was a hand. The olive skinned guy.
"Who gave you permission to do that?" His voice was so icy and low you could mistake it for the hissing of a snake. Black substance vaporized around his body, giving off the smell of tar.
The waiter suddenly saw the hand around his neck envelope in blue fumes. An electric jolt ran through his body, head to toe. Then his insides started heating up, like boiling. He felt an unbelievable rush of pain going up to his head. He wanted to scream out loud but could only manage a squill. In panic, he grabbed the monster's hand but saw his own hands looked burnt, fried and useless. The last thing he saw was black waves of substance glowing from the guy's eyes. Then the heat rushed to his brain.
**
"That was pure brutal," Aido said.
"Definitely," Benjamin agreed.
Jamal dropped the roasted corpse. "At least I choke them to prevent the screams, don't I?"
"Doesn't matter how many times I see you pull that move off," Benjamin shivered, "but it still freaks me."
"That's four people now," Aido noted. "How many more before we start leaving a trail?"
Jamal pulled out a phone. "Not more. He had an encrypted phone." He handed it to Benjamin, who rushed to the newly set up computer in the room. He typed in a few commands and then raised a thumbs up.
"Anybody calls, we'll locate them."
"Good," Jamal said, pulling off his cloak. "Keep me posted."
"Where are you going?" Aido asked.
"To see my uncle," Jamal smiled. "At least I have to act humane when not in the cloak, right?"
