Europe is not for people like you honestly, to live comfortably in Europe you have to be financially responsible, buying a car is not a necessity when you have good transport network system, renting 3 bedroom flat as a single person is just waste of money.

Car and bigger accommodation are necessary when you are married with kids

You are right. It is financially irresponsible as a single person.

The best way to enjoy living overseas is to work in a professional field
. All these low-skilled occupations are not meant for the average educated African, they are meant for people who lack the brains to go to school. The immediate focus for any immigrant who chooses to go overseas should be to get into a professional occupation regardless of how long it takes, you will be rewarded in the end. Sadly, I have seen quite a lot of highly educated Africans engaging in low skilled jobs to make ends meet, some of them end up being stuck in the low skilled jobs all through their life. It's not uncommon in the UK, Canada, Germany etc to see African/Asian immigrants with a PhD driving taxis for a living.

This is so simplistic but not actually realistic, people who failed to get a job is not because of lack of professional qualification, you don't get a job here purely because you have the qualification, EU citizens will be considered first before you, your immigration status will be considered first before your qualification. Not everybody will go into medical or IT field just to get a job even as they don't have passion for such job.

While you are busy waiting for a professional job, your rent, bills and family needs are not waiting, so low skilled job becomes plan B.

I have a Nigerian friend here who bought a car while still a student even when that car brings in no money rather it takes.

When he graduated and could not get a job to keep him here he tried to sale the car before moving back to Nigeria but no good offer comes in, he was forced to sale it for a peanut and i keep wondering what is the point?

That's perfectly fine in the short-term. The danger is that when people get involved in low skilled occupations, they inevitably get sucked into the rat race of surviving just to pay bills. What then happens is that the person will end up spending over 20 years (or a whole career) in the low skilled field. There are immense opportunities overseas to upskill qualifications into high paying careers. If a person isn't academically inclined, they can choose to learn a high paying trade e.g plumbing, electrician, Gas engineer etc, these trades all earn circa £50,000/year. Sadly, you are more likely to see immigrants working in care homes and security for minimum wage than in these trades.

Easy to say " save as much as you can, and then go back to school and study a course that gets you into a professional occupation e.g medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, engineering" but in reality is not that easy
Given a lot of variables, a career accountant aged 41 years with wife and kids, can't easily save up thousands of £€$ to get back to school and study to become a doctor. Which unskilled legal job will he do to save up loads of cash to support himself through college ?

And don't forget most times, immigrants spend years trying to sort out their immigration status in the country, and the can't necessarily take up some jobs or certain full-time position

I am in no way making excuses for any immigrant to have less aspirations, I am just saying that the have additional factors working against them, some jobs strictly hire citizens not even resident permit holders, and you took my statement about hiring "unskilled white person" out of context, firstly I never used the word "unskilled" I said "less qualified", I am not trying to be a smartas#, but those 2 words have totally different meanings, especially in the context of this topic

Now let me explain what I meant, most companies will hire a white citizen who had a second class lower degree and 3 years experience, than an African immigrant with a second class upper degree with 7 years experience, that's what I meant by hiring a less qualified white person. Never meant that the will hire a white crackhead to be doctor, instead of a qualified African doctor. There are hundreds of studies to support this, I am not just talking out of my a#s.

Well said at the bolded.

I lived in Ireland for 4 years.

Have been to other developed countries.

Opportunities may be available in some of these countries, but generically educated African immigrants are at the back of the queue. Fact.

Retraining costs a shitload of money. If you are a fresh immigrant the cost of keeping your house heated alone your first winter has eaten deep into your precious naira-converted-into foreign currency.

Back in the post-military early-Obasanjo days before Nigeria descended to shithole/hellhole level, a lot of boys in Europe we would meet were strongly considering porting back to Nigeria. I know many who said it was only the nightmare of carrying petrol in their car boots and firing gens at night that kept them back in obodo oyibo (i.e. the amenities and better quality of life). Nobody one meets these days even hints at that anymore.

Summary: if you want to emigrate and you're single and unencumbered and young, you can come in, take up anything you can get, and with careful belt-tightening and all that, you can retrain or eventually get a foot on the ladder. The older and/or encumbered ones have more belt-tightening to do and much higher chances of ending up without that much-dreamed-about white collar job. Ultimately, it's their children they're giving a leg up, not themselves.

It is now well known that trades are very good and rewarding, but they are not easy to break into due to competition for apprenticeship schemes. Using Canada as an example, employers want ready made. Journeypersons/companies and are not so willing to train newcomers or apprentices for 3 to 4 years. Most of those they break in are usually relations of journeypersons (Old boys club). That is a major reason why you hardly find immigrants or newcomers in the trades. Immigrants don't have the connections or networks. Hence they end up with survival jobs.
Well paying vacancies are very competitive too. The last vacancy that was posted at my work place for one electrician position had over 180 applications fromjourneypersons.
The only apprenticeship scheme we have for our apprenctices takes 15 people every year out of over about a thousand application. Out of that 15, 10 would atleast have relations already in the system. One would be lucky to be one of the remaining 5 via equal opportunity. If it was easy to break into trade, i trust African bros to yapa in it.

. Claremont, I doubt you understand the kind of racism that goes on in the professional sphere in Europe. We had this argument with a colleague also. I applied for internship positions with my CV (same format, just different names, emails and phone numbers). I received 29 rejections in a space of 4 days while all 30 scheduled an interview with the one with the German name.

I am in Germany and it is pretty much the same. Thousands of Africans here even with German Masters & PhDs working low level cleaning and physical logistics jobs. I mean, seeing those who have been settled here for more than 20-30 years looking so haggardly is enough to discourage my continued residence in Europe.

I'm just waiting for the 2019 elections to be over and to receive my degree. Heaven knows I won't be here come June 2019.

I also live in Germany. Many of you guys came here with false informations. There are Nigerians doing good in Germany and not all of them are doing Unskilled Labour. However a white man doesn't give a damn about what you do for a living ,But your financial capabilities.(Paying your bills comes first). What do you expect in a country that you cannot speak and write their Language nor have some of their culture.Everybody knows that Germany is still a little bit conservative like Scandinavia countries and that Nigerian degrees aren't valuable.Hence many of the guys doing masters here would always have problem. The few ones that got lucky after doing Masters here were good at software developing or programming. There some courses that aren't marketable in Germany. There are still Opportunities for those ones that are prepared and ready to grab them.

For the ones that migrated out of Nigeria with wrong impression about Abroad,You will always see them lamenting.Migration and integrating yourself into another Man society is not a day job.You should be ready to work your ass off.According to Eu labour law,Third world Nationals should always be employers last option. If you as a Third world citizen knows this fact,Then you should be ready to work harder so that you can find into competition

There are other opportunities in the EU, just that your residence permit status determine how you gonna grab those opportunities. Each country have law and you shouldn't expect the law to favour you more than their own citizen!!

What does not work for Mr A might work for Mr B,You guys should stop spreading false news !! If anyone of you want to live large, Go back home, break a bank and live large..Oyinbo designed their country for comfort and not for show off.

In addition, immigrants stand a better chance of landing an apprenticeship position if they can move to where oyinbos do not like to go. Like up North which could be very cold with zero social life or smaller cities. Once they get the journeyperson ticket, they can now move to a bigger city, but rarely would one find a nigerian that is willing to do that. They would rather be working in survival jobs than move out of a big city.

As you know, the racism tends to multiply exponentially with each kilometre that you move outside a big city. Another reason to stay close to where people of your skin colour are generally found.

Some people are just woefully ignorant, or have selective naiveness to these issues.
Racism is bigger than what people think it is, majority of the companies in this western countries are racist scumbags, just very few are fair. lol

I had an experience with a canadian and American organisation, they were impressed with my CV and practically pleading with me to come work with them n wanted a chat with me and when I told them I was in Nigeria, you need to see the regret mail they american sent, the canadian was a little humane advising I find my way to canada.

Exactly. Back when I was still a PR in Canada with only naija passport, I once lost out on a job that required frequent seamless travel to the states. It was a small business about 100km from the US border, and they wanted someone that could hit the ground running. Someone they could call in the middle of the night that could pick up his passport and just drive straight to the US ASAP without issues. My Nigerian passport+PR did not give me such luxury. I didn't shout racism when I was turned down. I just moved on to a job I was a proper fit for.

While this is true, it's not always the case. I have worked in very small towns and never heard an encounter of racism. I sometimes do get the occasional curious stare because the residents almost know every black person in town.
