Don't forget to add conjugations! grin . How accents can change the meaning of a word e.g. ou=or but où= where.
The more you read and come across words the more you learn which ones re feminin ou masculin. So folks shouldn't get discouraged wondering how to know the gender of every word smiley

Also it helps to become friends with the verbes être and avoir ...they have a way of "running tinz" in French land grin

I had secondary school French prior to the 6 months prep. For your prep, I suggest you start with building your vocabulary and working on grammar, while listening to French audio at the same time (I think the listening part is the most important). It's very possible to develop a solid A1 within your timeline...you only need to put in a lot of work.

Let me also add this: don't be afraid of reading in French, I've found that a few people I've chatted with get discouraged when they study books written solely in french. To overcome this, all you need is a French dictionary (paper or online) - I prefer paper dictionaries (not pocket dictionaries o - they are too limited)and the online Collins dictionary because they give other possible translations of a word or phrase with examples. Google translate is ok but it gets unreliable when you want to translate longer phrases - I will only recommend it to more advanced learners who can identify the incorrect translations.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask for more clarification if anything is still unclear.

Thanks a bunch for taking the time to respond. Grammar & Vocabulary is what i'm working on now though a bit tricky with all the rules especially differentiating the masculine & feminine gender article but I guess I will get the hang of it soon enough. RFI has been downloaded to help with the audio aspect.

Will definitely keep intouch in case i get stuck. God bless you!

Thank you, just wondering how to differentiate the masculine from feminine. It's quite confusing.

Hello dear, your first sentence says "je suis dan l'Avion on vourye au paris mentenant. Purquor?" . Thats my off head understanding of your first sentence. Try and correct me pls. Thats my own way of learning french one step at a time. Merci

You learn as you go along...there is no hard and fast rule. You can also look at conjugation. How to convert the verb TO EAT to I eat...you eat...he eats etc

I believe prepmyfuture has also been recommended...I believe it has lessons from beginners level...I may be wrong

Schaum's Outline of French Grammar to the rescue (see attached pic)

But like the examples Mamaroon gave, some words you'll just have to learn their gender. Na small small...very soon you'll surprise yourself

Greetings Francophiles,

Great job you're all doing!

The best way to learn French gender is to learn it together with the word. E.g. la table. Don't let this slow you down however. Starting with grammar isn't the best way to begin your French journey. Even native speakers get these wrong!

Beginning by learning grammar rules and conjugation tables may end up frustrating you. If you're interested in self study, start with Michel Thomas French and be amazed how much French you learn in days/weeks. IMHO, the Michel Thomas method is the best way to introduce yourself to a language. Try it and see.

Hello njzjdjsjsosidjdndb grin grin. Can we have a WhatsApp group for this please? I think it will help a lot.
njbybrthnly:
You're right...I for one would be willing to help but I wouldn't know where (or even how) to start. First off, I'm not very confident of my French outside the scope of the exam. Again, I also feel many of us are still learning French from scratch, to get a general understanding of the language, hence, don't yet know the specific areas to focus more attention on.

I agree though that the task of passing this exam is not as daunting as it appears so I'm game if you are as you senior me for this French waka

If you don't mind, you can go to Cotonou to learn it, it will be better that way, i also went there although i finished at the A2 level, because i have to do my mandatory 1yr Nysc which I'm doing now, the name of the school is CEBELAE .

I hope it helps?

Hi, I sent you a mail. I'd like to get some details about CEBELAE as I am interested in going there. Thank you in anticipation of a swift response.
