Merry Christmas Nairalanders

How do car owners in Nigeria cope with their cars that required premium fuel? Are these Mercedes benz and lexus owners aware of the fuel required for their cars? Let's discuss......

As long as the PMS is not adulterated you are good to go.

Reduced performance and poor fuel economy are the major issues.

Mercs and Lexuses aren't that bad. It's Acura's and Infiniti's that have it really bad. Plus those with turbo engines.

I think this can be accepted for cars that says "Premium fuel recommended" and not ones with "premium fuel required"....... Besides, there's hardly any good fuel in Nigeria.

For these particular reasons is why I wouldn't have anything to do with those brands. Why would I be comfortable with any form of underperformance in my car?

Can't really blame the cars or the companies, though. Blame your country for only importing low octane PMS.

Tbh, there's no performance car that runs at peak output with regular gas. Higher compression ratios require premium.

Oga delete Mercedes Benz from your list and probably Lexus... The companies have built in tolerance levels that allow us enjoy our cars in peace. Rather focus on Nissan, Infinity and the rest.

when you buy a Foreign used car, if you inspect the intake area and injectors from combustion side, they are usually very clean. The catalytic converters usually very white.

Give car 3-6months go back and Inspect. The catalytic converter would have turned brown and intake and injectors would have turned black with tarlike substance on the exposed surfaces.

This is irrespective of the use of recommended oil or presence of a DTC.

We have very shitty fuel.

The ford's, Acura and honda's are very susceptible to our bad fuel and the catalytic converters get blocked really quick, it's worse when theres an emission DTC and engine is not running efficiently. for most toyota's, they burn out their catalytic converters, but cannot be said of other brands.

hopefully Dangote will get it right.

This info is loud and clear but on the interim, what can you do? Would you rather stay off those cars or go with octane boosters and hope for the best?

Acuras and infinitis have it really bad. I couldn't rev more than 3k rpm yesterday cause my acura pinged so badly. I used to add octane booster to every tank of fuel to stop the pings. However when I found out that the MMT in those boosters will harm my engine and cat, I stopped using them. It was awful. I drove like a granny throughout my journey yesterday. Mpg and performance really suffered. Imagine getting 16mpg on a highway and not being able to go past 3k rpm.

What can we do? The very obvious disadvantage is shitty MPG as mentioned by several others.

However, the joy of driving for weeks and sometimes months without coming across my vehicle make & model overshadows the pain of constantly visiting the gas station. grin

A very, very sad reality. This is another reason Toyotas are highly valued in this part of the world.

Anytime one intends to swap a failing fuel pump assembly with a toks(used ) one, that is when you will weep for this country.
Dangote? Well, till then.

That one na small thing, you no talk about the beastly performance and glorious handling.

For the performance I get, I would buy the wahala over and over again. I set my mind on quarterly Carbon Cleaning

My 2nd gen MDX rides like a f*cking dream. For an SUV of that size the ride is unbelieveably fun and nimble. I cannot wipe the smug look on my face when I'm tearing past showoff drivers , and have them glancing sideways in embarrassment trying to compete in thier shiny new 201x Highlanders and RXs .
Had a recent experience last week on the Lagos Ibadan express way. this fx35 comes barreling out of no where and cuts in front of me , styling and speeding like the road King he assumed he was. I just smile....in less than 60 secs the guy was made a believer.

Does your second gen MDX not ping (rattling sound coming from engine) when you try to rev above 3k rpm or stump on the accelerator?
Do you use octane booster? I'm asking cos mine pings like mad unless I add octane booster.
I enjoyed the mad acceleration when I drove it with the obodo oyibo fuel it came with.

I haven't had any pinging experience. No rattling at all evn at speeds of up to 100 mph (160km/h)
Car is fairly new tho, less than two months.
However i notice some type of high pitched screeching sound on high speeds. definitely not from the engine, I'm still unsure what the culprit is.

Does your car recommend or require premium?

Any Range Rover users in the house with input?

Wind noise from slightly open door seals.
Is the car an MDX 2nd gen?/

Does it make a difference if the fuel is bought anywhere else other than nnpc cos the last two fills have been nnpc and the pinging was very evident.

The noise is not an aerodynamic one. It sounds like scraping metal ... the type of noise brake pads could make in contact the rotors

Yes, 2nd Gen.

The quality of product definitely matters, many of these shylock gas stations sell heavily adulterated fuel. I just try to be very careful where i buy products from (NNPC or otherwise) . Not all NNPC stations are run by NNPC or have a honest management for that matter. So NNPC sign post no be guarantee.

Thanks!

And you don't get any pinging. Interesting. Your J37A1 engine has a compression ratio of 11.2, which is one of the highest I've seen for a mainstream car. How's your throttle response? And gas mileage? Have you ever filled up at a particular station and felt that your car was a bit abnormal when driving?

Another interesting case is the 2GR-FSE on the IS350. Compression ratio of 11.8, and people still drive it here.

I'm just curious, btw. I'm looking into Nigerian fuel and possible effects on performance engines.

These things pings, a lot of folks drive them without knowing. If you try that with a range rover sports, you'd soon see "reduced engine performance" on dash. Its best to keep using the octane boosters.

Any negative effect of octane boosters? I hear they can mess up your fuel assembly (clog injectors, etc).

Anything possible solution? I've seen people suggest using fuel injector cleaner every 5k miles or so.
