What You Can Do If You Feel Undervalued At Work by Danurugwo: 7:07am On Jan 08, 2019
In the months leading up to leaving my last job, I felt overloaded, burdened and resentful. I was producing what I thought was quality work even while my plate was so full it had started to crack.

I thought I deserved a parade in my honor for my efforts, but instead it felt like my boss would be better off without me. We know how this story ends, but I now know that instead of wallowing in my feelings of being unrecognized, I should have taken action to get the recognition I needed.

Before getting to the solution, let’s examine the problem. It turns out I’m not the only one whose confidence and joy have been hijacked by a lack of appreciation.

The Workforce Institute at Kronos recently conducted a survey entitled "Do You Feel Appreciated at Work?" The online survey polled 2,030 adults in the U.S. Nearly half (47 percent) of the participants said they either don’t feel appreciated or feel only somewhat appreciated at work.

In fact, when asked what makes them unhappy at work, participants listed a lack of appreciation much more than criticism (26 percent), heavy workload (25 percent), poor work-life balance (23 percent), and someone taking credit for the work they did (22 percent).

Now we know that nearly half of the American workforce feels unappreciated, but what can we do about it?

Changing the work culture of an entire country is impossible, but here are a few ways you can take action to improve your daily work environment.

Nail down your definition of appreciation
Take some time to figure out what you need to feel appreciated. We all have unique needs, and what makes one employee feel satisfied might be completely different from another. Do you need more direction from your boss? Do you need a better work-life balance? Do you simply need a “thank you” from time to time?

Schedule a meeting with your boss
Give your boss regular updates about what you're working on and demonstrate that you are a crucial part of the team. After all, you are the only one who really knows what you do all day. If you feel overwhelmed, ask for advice about managing your workload or ask if you can shed a few tasks. This is also a good opportunity to share what you need to feel appreciated.

Take care of yourself
Try taking walks at lunch to clear your mind and relax. Talk to someone about how you are feeling and ask for advice. Eat healthy foods, drink plenty of water, and be sure to get enough sleep at night to recharge your energy levels. Feeling unhealthy will seriously impact your attitude at work.

Show appreciation
When someone does something kind for you, say thanks. If a coworker, or boss—they need encouragement too—does a great job at completing a task, tell them. If you show appreciation for others, they'll be more likely to return the favor. Gratitude is a two-way street.

If we grasp that feeling valued is a deep human need, we can better understand the part we play in how we're recognized at work. If you aren't feeling recognized, don't walk storm around, grumpy and irritable. Take action and receive what you deserve.

Be realistic
Before you take any action, ask yourself whether you’re being realistic about the amount of appreciation “you expect from your boss, colleagues, peers. People are very busy. The feedback might not be as much as you want, but it might be reasonable within the context of your organization.

Talk to your boss
If your above-par efforts are going unsung, engage your boss in a conversation. Granted, this will be easier with some managers than others. .

Increase your team’s visibility
If you manage a team, you also need to look for ways to explain to others what the group does and why it’s valuable.

Recognize others’ contributions
One surefire to get your own work noticed is, “paradoxically,” to “praise and appreciate others. By being the person who notices a job well done, you can be the agent of change” in your organization’s culture’

Validate yourself
While being appreciated and valued for your work is a wonderful thing, you can’t expect all your motivation to come from honors, accolades, and public gratitude.

Consider moving on
If you continue to feel undervalued and unappreciated by your company, it might be a sign that it’s not the right place for you.

Op, you've actually succeeded in saying NOTHING!

Know your job. Do your job. Take your salary and make the best use of it. Have your eyes and ears outside. List different kinda lies if interviews fall on your shift days. Attend interviews as they come. And when THE better job comes and you're sure it's actually BETTER, then leave them without giving them a clue you're leaving.

And if HR calls for an interview to know why you're leaving, gen gen!!!! Finish him!!! (in mortal combat's voice) cheesy cheesy cheesy

If you feel undervalued at work, then it is means that you are either putting in a lot of effort and getting little or no reward OR you are feeling jealous of the progress and recognition accorded to others.

My take is that you should either talk to your HR and explain your feelings in this regard (if the organizations allows for this) OR you should seek for another job.

This is because feeling 'undervalued' shows that you will not be motivated to do your tasks and if you are not doing your tasks, then the company will not see you as someone to be valued.............and the vicious cycle continues.

Op, I wanted to comment on your writeup when I saw this your post.

Please in your prayer add those who have refused to see that the murder of that same treasury is going on right now.

How I wish the brethren who have been killed in order for cows to live can see this your post.

OP is very right. let me add mine. I get appreciated worldly and financially by doing these.
I work in a place where division of labour is valued so much. I'm so used to finish g my task on time bt with little or no appreciation. I sometimes work extra time bt with no appreciation. My Boss started appreciating me when I deliberately spend more time on a certain task than before. I deliberately started taking my time on my tasks. I do go to office in the weekend to prepare assignments for Monday (that stopped) I will wait for everybody to come on Monday before I start anything. when I'm been asked by my boss to come during weekends I always promised to come like 2 hours behind schedule since it's weekend.
right now my speciality in my tasks makes them makes them to beg me for timely delivery of assignments. ( not really that indispensable bt they knw it will take new employees time to adapt) so I av no fear of being sacked..
