Enugu Rangers will feature in the money-spinning group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup after they eliminated Bantu FC of Lesotho 4-2 on aggregate today.

Rangers first featured at this stage of the competition in 2004.


The Nigerian club won the first leg of the playoffs 2-1 in Maseru a week ago, but they were stunned after just 13 minutes, when Lehlohonolo Fothoane put the visitors from Lesotho in front.

Ajani Ibrahim drew the home team level in the 19th minute with an assist by Tope Olusesi, before Godwin Aguda made it 2-1 a minute later with Ifeanyi George providing the assist.

The Lesotho champions improved in the second half to stop ‘The Flying Antelopes’ from recording a bigger win.

The draw for the group stage will be staged tomorrow in Cairo, Egypt.

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side Enugu Rangers have qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup group stage after a 2-1 second leg win over Bantu FC of Lesotho in an encounter played on Sunday, January 20.



Enugu Rangers recorded a narrow 2-1 win in the first leg encounter played in Lesotho.


The game was played at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Cathedral Stadium.

Bantu took the lead in the encounter through Fathoane as early as the 13th minute.

Enugu Rangers equalised in the 19th minute through Ajani Ibrahim when he converted a ball through to him by Emmanuel Olusesi.

Godwin Aguda scored the second goal for Enugu Rangers in the 20th minute as they took a narrow lead to the halftime break.

Rangers had multiple opportunities to make the win more comfortable with Kevin Itoya and Pascal Seka guilty of failing to put the ball behind the net.

The result meant that Enugu Rangers replicate the achievement of Enyimba International by progressing to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup 4-2 on aggregate and will find out their opponents on Monday, January 21.

History


The tournament was founded as the CAF Cup in 1992, modeled after the European UEFA Cup. Trophy named after Moshood Abiola, a Nigerian businessman, publisher and politician as well as being the first Director of Sports in independent Nigeria[citation needed].

The CAF Cup was the idea of the CAF president, Issa Hayatou who successfully made 1992 the year of African football. The competition was initiated soon after the successful 1992 African Cup of Nations in which twelve finalists participated in the competition for the first time in the history of the African competition. 31 teams participated in the first edition of the CAF Cup, and Nigerian club Shooting Stars F.C. were the first to hold the cup after defeating Ugandan club Villa SC in the final.

The original trophy is in the possession of the Algerian club JS Kabylie who have won it outright following their third successive win in 2002, becoming the only team in Africa allowed to have the trophy on display in their trophy room.

The Moroccan club Raja Casablanca was the last to hold the former trophy in 2003 defeating the Cameroonian Cotonsport de Garoua in the final.

In 2004, the CAF Cup was merged with the African Cup Winners' Cup, and was renamed the CAF Confederation Cup, UEFA taked after an example by creating similar UEFA Europa League in 2009.

In 2013, CS Sfaxien became the first club to win four trophies after defeating TP Mazembe in the final.

QualificationEdit

The domestic cup winners from all 55 CAF member associations are eligible to participate. The third-placed club in the domestic league of the top twelve placed CAF member associations also qualify.
