Alaba: 10,000 Igbo Traders Make $4 Billion Per Year – American Expert by Nobody: 4:57pm On Jan 22, 2019
An American economics expert, Robert Neuwirth has called for the global scaling and worldwide adoption of the Igbo Apprenticeship System and other African sharing economic systems in other to maximize economic development all over the world.

Neuwirth was speaking at the globally important TEDGlobal 2017. Igbodefender.com obtained transcripts of the talk which has been viewed over 1 million times!

Neuwirth said;

“So, this is Alaba International Market. It’s the largest electronics market in West Africa.

“It’s 10,000 merchants, they do about four billion dollars of turnover every year.

“And they say they are ardent apostles of Adam Smith:competition is great, we’re all in it individually, government doesn’t help us.

“But the interesting reality is that when I asked further, that’s not what grew the market at all.

“There’s a behind-the-scenes principle that enables this market to grow.

“And they do claim — you know, this is an interesting juxtaposition of the King James Bible and “How To Sell Yourself.””

“That’s what they say is their message. But in reality, this market is governed by a sharing principle.

“Every merchant, when you ask them, “How did you get started in global trade?” they say, “Well, when my master settled me.”

“And when I finally got it into my head to ask, “What is this ‘settling?'” it turns out that when you’ve done your apprenticeship with someone you work for, they are required — required — to set you up in business.

“That means paying your rent for two or three years and giving you a cash infusion so you can go out in the world and start trading.

“That’s locally generated venture capital. Right? And I can say with almost certainty that the Igbo apprenticeship system that governs Alaba International Marketis the largest business incubator platform in the world.

Advocating the scaling of the Igbo business incubation system and similar systems, Mr Neuwirth said,

“These are these sharing models that exist out there that need to be propagated and used and scaled. OK?”

He advocated the adoption of the systems as a way of ending economic unfairness in the world.

“And if we propagate these things, we can begin to bring infrastructure to everyone, and that will ensure that communities are leading their own development, which is, I believe, what we need in the world, and, I would suggest, what we need in Africa.”

IGBODEFENDER COMMENT:
Thank you, Mr Robert Neuwirth for this expose. Mr Neuwirth, we Igbodefenders ask you to extend your studies past mighty Alaba International Market; but also to Onitsha Main Market (the market capital of Africa), Ariaria Market, ASPANDA, Ladipo Spare Parts Market, Computer Village, the Billion Dollar Nollywood markets at Pound Road, Idumota, Iweka Road etc, etc, etc., and other businesses running with the Igbo Apprenticeship System – IAS. There is much more to be learnt about the super Igbo Apprenticeship System.

Can people just not turn this beautiful thread to "tribal" fights. And just imagine what are powerful incubation system the Economist was talking about.

An example of the resilience of the Nigerian spirit. A fact that is so ironic compared to the terrible shenanigans of successive Govts.

See, this is the thing with Igbos. You are likely the only ethnic group who must quantify everything in terms of claiming superiority over others. This is why no one likes or trust you guys.

You dont even trust yourselves because it is all about empty bragging rights over others instead of trying to be genuinely happy as most Yorubas and Northerners are even when they dont have much.

Very good. But this doesn't change the fact that we're only enriching Chinese companies who manufacture these electronics. It'll have been better if those electronics are being manufactured in Aba, Abeokuta, Kano and Port Harcourt.

This apprenticeship system and business model is why the Igbo people have the broadest middle class and the lowest rates of household poverty in Nigeria.

But an American expert from the world's most industrialized just said the apprenticeship system as practiced.by Igbos should be scaled up globally to ensure fairer economic development.

According to him, " This is what the world needs".

First of, where did he get his statistical source?. If his source is untenable, his computations are therefore dismissible.

IF truly, the turnover is any thing close to this much annually, then I urge Lagos state government to increase the tax sales per shop to align with the provision of infrastructure that they do enjoy.

Any one who is economically inclined to commercial activities would know that Turnover does not equate Profit. The number of sales you make does not translate to net profits.

Do they keep books?, do they have balance sheets even as semi literates as they are?

How does the profit or loss which is the most determining factor affects their standard of living as many can't still afford 3 square meals and often squat with friends, more pathetically, some live all their lives in shops.

Lastly, the Igbo apprenticeship system could be likened to a master/servant OR a boss/housemaid contractual system whereby the servant or maid devotes a large number of years serving his master or boss who in turn rewards him with peanuts after being used. No educated Igbo man serves but only the illiterates and semi literates which are found in disturbing high numbers. This system is exploitative, it should rather be discarded than being encouraged.

Everyone is Yoruba Moslem to you lot because the natural bigotry amd insecurity you are born with means you must always put others in a box or category you can them use to discriminate against them. Fact is that classy men are gracious with their success (Yorubas) while brash and insecure men (Igbo) are loud over every little achievement.

For example, how many entertainers are bigger in Africa than Davido and Wizkid who are both Yorubas? Those two are practically the biggest stars from the African continent today!!! If they were Igbos we will not hear the end of it with how you lot will come here every minute claiming you developed Nigerian music and your artists are superior to others.
