She went through her wardrobe and shook her head. There were so many clothes there; many of which she had never worn or had worn only once. The numbers of the designer shoes and bags were also mind-boggling.

Yet, with all these, she was hardly living a fulfilling life. With all that she had, she found herself unfulfilled. The clothes were simply too many. She would have to drastically cut down on the number of wears she bought.

It was evening and time to prepare dinner. Madam Rose was in the kitchen to supervise what the house would eat. She was in a happy mood. Business was very good that day and she felt like having her best food that evening.

Fried rice with fried chicken and fried plantain was her best meal. She was supposed to cut down on the consumption of fried food, but that was a big problem for her. As much as she tried to do that, she realized how helpless she was.

All the ingredients were ready and Rhoda was standing by to take instructions.

'Are the pots washed?' Rose inspected the pots.

'Yes, madam.'

'Light the gas cooker and put the big pot on the fire.'

Rose watched as Rhoda did as she was directed. Now, Rhoda was giving Madam some concern. Looking at the maid, Rose could see that she
was always well-dressed these days. Not only that, Rose felt she looked too good for a maid. And she was even using nice perfume - a maid
using nice perfume!

To compound the issue, her husband saw nothing wrong in the whole thing. Anytime Rose complained to him, he would dismiss the issue as
unimportant. Not only that, he always supported the maid.

Two days ago, for instance, Rhoda made the soup to get burnt. Rose was displeased and had berated her. To her surprise, when she told him
about the matter, he said nobody was above mistake. That was all that Nonso could say or do about the issue.

Could there be something going on that she did not know? Was there anything between the maid and her husband? Rose could not totally
vouch for her husband in women matters. She suspected that he had mistresses outside.

She had even caught him with one before, although he denied having any romantic relationship with the lady. Ebube was one of the ladies he
employed as ticketing officer. There was one particular day Rose had visited her husband unannounced in his office. She had met him and the
lady in a very serious compromising position. Nonso claimed he was only playing with her. Rose still suspected that his marital fidelity was
questionable.

But would Nonso stoop so low as to have relationship with the house maid? Would he be such a pervert to engage in such a thing? Rose felt
there must be something to this. Whatever it was, she decided to find out.

Later that evening, Rose was in her daughter's room to have a chat with her.

'Sandra, I want to ask you some questions.' Rose held her daughter's hand in a show of intimacy. 'What d'you say to the fact that the house
girl is dressing so nicely.'

Sandra looked uncertain. 'I don't understand, mum. What're you talking about?'

'What I'm talking about is that the house girl dressing calls for concern.'

'Oh, come on, mum. What is bad in somebody looking good?'

'She's looking too good for my liking. Remember she's just a house girl And another thing is that your father is always supporting her.'

'Oh mummy, stop it. Don't tell me you're jealous of a common housemaid.'

'You don't understand,' Rose smiled to herself and nodded meaningfully. 'You really don't understand.'

Rose still believed there was more to it than what could be seen now.

Two nights later, Sandra was in the sitting room alone watching a romantic comedy. As usual, others had retired to bed. It was already few
minutes after midnight and the movie was becoming boring. She yawned and decided that she had had enough for the day. She switched off
the television and went upstairs to her room.

Few minutes after she lay on the bed, it was as if sleep had decided to make her an enemy. Another few minutes later, she decided to take
some fruit juice. The kitchen was downstairs and she had to go and get what she wanted there.

Silently, she went down the stairs to the kitchen. The juice was very cold. She liked it that way. As she poured the drinks inside the big glass
cup, she thought she heard a male voice coming from the adjoining room. That room was the one given to Rhoda. What would a man be doing
there?

Sandra tiptoed to the door and brought her right ear close to the knob. She heard the voice say something and Rhoda giggled. The voice did
not sound like Tony's, the new security man's, own. As a matter of fact, it sounded like her father's voice..

What was her father doing in Rhoda's room at that ungodly hour? What could they be saying that would make her giggle so excitedly? Sandra
was curious. She remembered her mother alleging that Rhoda was looking too good for her liking. Could mum be correct in her suspicion?

What was her father doing in Rhoda's room at that ungodly hour? What could they be saying that would make her giggle so excitedly? Sandra was curious. She remembered her mother alleging that Rhoda was looking too good for her liking. Could mum be correct in her suspicion? There was only one way to find out. Without further ado, Sandra turned the knob and opened the door.

'What!?' The shocking word came from her mouth. The voice Sandra had heard belonged to her father, alright. He was lying naked beside Rhoda. She was naked too and had her hand on his big, hairy chest.

Nonso instinctively grabbed his trousers banging on the back of the bed side chair and used it to cover his private part. Rhoda did not react
that fast but she too pulled a nearby wrapper to cover her body.

'Daddy, what are you doing with her?' Sandra's question came like a whiplash. But was it more like a rhetorical question: the one which needed no answer. Even a teenager knew what they were doing.

'Sh-sh-sh, bring your voice down!' Nonso could only manage to find his voice. 'I can explain everything.'

'And what d'you want to explain? Is it not obvious?'

'It's not what you think.' He made to stand from the mattress, but changed his mind.

Sandra was sick of the scene. She shook her head and left the place.

'Oh. God,' He found himself short of breath. 'I should have locked the door.'

Rhoda was unmoved by the whole scene. Sandra caught them in the act, so what? They would know about it, sooner or later, she thought; so
the earlier, the better.

Sandra went to her room, still finding it difficult to believe that her father was doing what she caught him doing. So, mummy was very right
after all. And to think that she, Sandra, was the one defending the house girl! That meant her father was the one making the girl look good. But
it was not entirely the fault of the girl. It was the fault of her father for not being able to control his libido.

Some moments later, her father came to her room. It was the work of the devil, he pleaded. The devil usually received the blame for such
misconduct. Nonso also said it was his first time with her, and hopefully the last. Sandra did not say a word although she did not believe his
defense.

'But daddy, how could you do it with ordinary house girl?' There was no doubt that she was disappointed in him.

'It's the work of the devil.' He became monotonous. 'Please, don't let your mum know. I promise it won't happen again.'

Janet finally joined the work force in her church. She had carefully considered the issue and had decided to join the choir. She had a flair for singing and the choir was the natural choice. Yes, she felt happy. Instead of singing those worldly lyrics, she would sing only to the glory of God, henceforth.

The issue of not having a stable, lasting relationship remained primordial to her. She revisited the issue and prayed about it. She must not forget her siblings. Their relationships were a matter of concern too. None of them had settled down in marriage. Her brother, living in youthful exuberance, did not see the need to be married, while her sister, Helen, had met with unfortunate circumstances. Janet believed now that she had solid relationship with God, there was vital need to seek divine intervention and solution to those challenges she and her siblings were facing.

She also decided to be part of the weekly programmes and other programmes of the church. The first challenge she had on this was on fasting. Now, she had not been fasting before and did not find it easy anytime she fasted. For now, any time she embarked on fasting, she would break it by three o'clock in the afternoon. That was not a bad way to start.

She also wanted moderation or modesty in all that she did. All those fanciful finger nails and attached hair would stop. She would still look good, but not in that extreme and loud way.

Janet also stopped clubbing. She was not a club freak before, so it was not a problem to stop going there altogether. She spent her weekends
mostly indoors. On Saturdays, she would remain in the house until towards evening when she would be going to the church for choir practice. This Saturday morning was not an exception. Her intention was to remain in the house until later when she would be going to the church.

She was taking a nap when her phone rang. It was an unknown number. She wanted to ignore it but it kept ringing. She finally decided to pick it.

'Hello?'

'Hello.' The caller appeared to measure his words. 'First and foremost, I want to apologize for not calling you before now.'

The voice sounded like Emma's own, but she wasn't sure. 'I'm sorry but who's on the line?'

'It's Emma, your guy. I'm sorry I've not called before now. And I'm awfully sorry for the ugly incident that happened that day. I promise to make it up to you.'

It was wonderful that Emma would call. Janet was greatly surprised. So Emma could still call her! She had thought he had forgotten totally about her. Now, he was calling to apologize for his misdeed, after several weeks! Wonderful!

'It's alright.' She did not betray any emotion. 'I'm not holding any grudge against you.'

'Really? You mean you've completely forgiven me? That's great.' He was overly excited. 'When are we meeting? Can you come over to my place, now? As I said I promise to make it up to you.'

'No. I'm sorry I can't come.' Janet smiled to herself. 'As a matter of fact, I'll soon be going to church for choir practice.'

'I'm sorry I didn't get you there.'

Her smile broadened. She wished he could see it. 'I said I'll soon be going to the church for choir practice.'

There was a pause. 'Hello, am I on to Janet? I mean Janet LaVos?'

Janet laughed. She could imagine the confusion on his face. 'Of course this is Janet on the line. Don't be surprised. I'm a church worker now. I'm now totally for Christ.'

He whistled. 'Really?'

'Yes. And it's a wonderful experience. Try it, Emma. Try to live for Christ. You'll see that it's worth it.'

There was a long pause. He must have been totally confused by the turn of events.

'Hello? Hello, Emma?'

Janet realized she was talking on a dead line. She had given him the shocker of his life. But why would some people react to her new way of life in shock and unbelief? Why was it difficult for them to accept this new life? Did she not have the right to change belief and perspectives?

Janet realized she was talking on a dead line. She had given him the shocker of his life. But why would some people react to her new way of life in shock and unbelief? Why was it difficult for them to accept this new life? Did she not have the right to change belief and perspectives?

Whether they accepted that fact or not, her new life had come to stay. There was no going back. Come to think of it, she loved this new life.

The new life had undoubtedly created her as a new creature - a better one. Truly, she had forgiven Emma, but the only thing that would take her back to him was if he too would join her in this new life. Anything short of that was no, no, no. Her phone rang again. It was an unknown number. Janet felt Emma must be calling back again.

'Hello. I suppose it's the network.' Without waiting for the caller's response, she went on. 'I was talking about my new experience. I think it will be good for you to have that kind of experience.'

'Hello, sister Janet. This is Raphael on the line.'

She caught her breath. 'Oh, Raphael. Sorry I presumed it was the number that called me a moment ago.'

'I can see that. How're you, sister? How's the weekend?'

'Very fine, thank you. How's your own weekend?' She tried to smile.

'We thank God. I just called to say hello.' He laughed briefly.

'Oh, that's very thoughtful of you. Thank you. I appreciate that.'

'You're welcome. Bye.'

'Good bye.' She was pleased by his call.

That very Saturday, later towards evening, there was a knock on Raphael's door. He had been at home all day. He had done some washing. Some of the clothes had dried and he was presently ironing them on the ironing board in the sitting room.

He paused in doing what he was doing to see who was at the door.

'Hello. Good afternoon.' It was Becky, one of the teachers in his school.

'Good afternoon. What a surprise. I wasn't expecting you.' He smiled as he watched her come inside his apartment.

'Yes. I decided to make it a surprise visit.' She too was full of smiles.

She had visited him before. As a matter of fact, this was the third time she would be visiting.

'Please come in. You're welcome.'

He suspended his ironing to attend to her. 'What drinks should I get you?'

'Anything.' She sat on a seat.

'That means even if it's water, you'll be o.k.'

She laughed. 'If it's water that you can offer me, bring it. That's no problem.'

He laughed too and went to get a bottle of malt and digestive biscuits.

'So, how's the weekend?' He opened the bottle for her and poured the drinks in a glass cup.

'So so. I'm a little bored. That's why I came.'

Becky was certainly encouraging him. She had been a good friend and could easily metamorphose into a life companion, but she was not the one he had seen as his wife.

He brought a saucer and put the biscuits there.

'Thanks.' Again, she gave him a smile.

'You're welcome.'

He went back to his ironing.

'Maybe I should help you with that.'

He didn't expect the offer, and even if he expected it, he would still decline.

'No, please. Thank you.'

She watched the television as she intermittently took her snacks.

When he finished his chore, he came to sit opposite her. She yawned.

'I'm kind of tired. Can I just lie on your bed for a while?'

'Uhm, that shouldn't be a problem.' It was an unusual request but he saw no reason to decline.

He took her to the bedroom.

'There you are.' He pointed at the bed. He was glad the bedroom was neat and well-arranged.

He left her and returned to the sitting room. Few minutes after he sat down, she called him.

When he got back to her, he could see that she was now only in camisole and bum short.

'D'you have mentholated oil or Robb ointment?' She made a grimace.

'I have both. Hope no problem.'

'Can you do me a favor?' She touched her back in a dramatic way. 'I have this recurring back ache since morning; can you help to massage it?'

He hesitated and stared at her. 'I don't think I'm good in massaging, but I'll try.'

Her smile was almost coquettish. 'Yes. Please, try.'

He went to get the ointment. He thought she would just lift her top at the back but was surprised when she completely removed it. The upper part of her body was now only clad in a black bra.

She smiled at him again and lie on her belly.

Raphael opened the ointment and rubbed it on his palms.

'Which part of your back?' He stared undecidedly.

'The whole part.'

He breathed in deep and gingerly rubbed her back. He made a slow but thorough movement. The skin was soft and he could feel its warmth.

His mind went to Janet. What if Janet suddenly emerged and met him in this position? Would she ever believe all he was doing was to massage?

But that was what he was doing, wasn't it?

'Am I getting it right?' His question was naive. He knew it himself.

'Yeah.' Becky closed her eyes. From her lips came soft moans.

There you are, a voice spoke in his mind. Take her.

What?

You heard, man. Take her.

But she only asked me to massage her back.

Don't be silly and naive. She wants you to take her.

His right hand strayed to her chest.

Don't even try that, another voice - gentle but firm - said.

By the way, what d'you think you're doing?

I'm only helping to massage her back.

You really think you can handle this in this way?

Well.. I...

Stop it.

What?

Right now. Stop it.

He stopped.

'Why are you stopping?' She opened her eyes.

'I'm sorry I can't continue this.'

Her smile teased him. 'You've helped already. Thanks.'

He was relieved. He had thought she would urge him on. He sighed, nodded and turned to leave.

'If you need a massage too, I can help.' The smile was still etched on her face..

Raphael tried to smile back. 'No, thanks.'

He hurried back to the sitting room. Don't get yourself into trouble, his mind warned. Be careful.

He sat alone in the sitting room. Becky must have slept off. After about forty minutes, she came to rejoin him in the sitting room, rubbing her
eyes.

'I guess I'll be going.' She smiled again. 'Thanks for the massaging. I feel refreshed.'

He turned to her and stood up. She was wearing her full clothes again. 'I hope you were able to rest a bit.'

'Yes. I feel quite better.'

She picked her handbag and wore her shoes.

'Thanks for coming.'

He accompanied her out of the house and waved bye to her. He was grateful to God that he didn't fall for any temptation; that his relationship
with Becky remained platonic.

Sandra kept to her words by not divulging what her father did with Rhoda to her mum for the remaining days she spent in the house for her holiday. On the day she was to resume school, her mother decided to accompany her there. Rose decided she would drive herself.

Nonso waved to his daughter as his wife drove out of the compound. Now that Sandra had gone back to school, Nonso could breathe sigh of relief.

He called the maid to the large bedroom he shared with his wife.

'Oya, o ya. Come and join me on the bed.' He did not even have the patience of allowing his wife and daughter to be gone for many minutes.

'Oga, no o. Until you buy what I say you buy.' Rhoda was defiant; teasingly defiant.

'I'll buy it now. I'll even buy more than what you asked for. Don't you trust me again?'

'I trust you. But I want make you give me the money today.' She definitely knew how to hold him to a tight corner.

He stood up and opened the large wardrobe. He then brought out a wallet and a wad of naira notes from it. Without even counting the
money, he handed it over to her.

'This should be enough for now.'

She was happy. 'Yes, you be correct man.' Smiles followed her gushing.

'Thank you. Now, let's go into action.'

In the car, Sandra remained in a serious dilemma. She had promised her father not to divulge his secret, yet she felt bad that she was keeping the matter away from her mother. As if her mum was reading her mind, the older woman broached on the topic.

'That Rhoda, I'm seriously suspecting her.' Rose handed the steering wheel carefully. 'I'm waiting for just a little proof. As soon as I get one, I will send her packing.'

Sandra did not say anything.
'But tell me.' Rose stared briefly at her daughter. 'Can you honestly say you didn't see anything unusual between them? Didn't you see or hear something at all that is suspicion going on between your father and the house maid?'

Sandra did not say anything for some time. She was bogged down by indecision. Her mother looked at her expectantly. Sandra felt bad that she was part of a conspiracy.

'Alright, mum. But please don't tell him I told you. I promised him I will not tell.'

Rose nodded her head. 'Don't worry. I'll handle the issue tactfully.'

Sandra took another pause. 'Mum, you're actually right in your suspicion. I didn't know it was true until I caught dad in Rhoda's room some
nights ago. But he pleaded it was his first time and that he would not do it again.'

'Yes. I know it.' Unconsciously, Rose banged the steering wheel. Her tone was a mixture of anger and bitterness.

'I know that something was wrong the moment that girl became nice-looking, and he was always supporting her.'

She looked at her daughter sharply. 'Sandra, you saw all these and you kept them away from me? Are you supporting your dad in this?'

'No, no, mum.' Sandra was quick to defend herself. 'How could I ever support him? Secondly, the time you first asked me about the matter, I hadn't seen them together. Until some nights ago. I didn't tell you because he pleaded that I should not do so and that he would never do it again.'

'Alright. No problem. I know how to handle it.' Rose gave a sad smile.

Hours later, after she had dropped her daughter in the university and had returned to the house, Rose carefully planned what she would do.

Nonso did not come back home that night until after nine. His wife was patient. After he had taken his dinner and rested a bit - still in the sitting room - she decided to discuss the burning issue with him.

'My dear.' Rose was cool. 'I know how good you have been to me since we married. Although things were not perfect, we've managed to get along and today, we have grown up children.'

Nonso was all ears but did not interrupt his wife. He wondered what she was driving at.

'This thing I'm telling you is utmost in my mind.' Rose touched her chest in a show of passion. 'Please I want to take God beg you not to allow the devil to destroy all that we have labored to build over the years.'

'What're you saying, woman?' He knew she had not really hit the nail on the head. The suspense was becoming unnerving.

'There's a devil lurking around this house who wants to destroy this family and everything we have. We must not allow that to happen.' Beads of sweat were forming on her brow.

'You're speaking in riddles.' Nonso glared at her. 'What devil are you talking about? Who is the devil?' He looked around as if to confirm if indeed the devil was lurking somewhere.

'Rhoda is the devil.' She audibly breathed in, in satisfaction.

'Rhoda?' His mouth opened.

'Yes. She's the devil I'm talking about. Tomorrow morning, we must send her away from this house.'

Nonso looked confounded. 'How could Rhoda be the devil? What're you talking about?'

'I dreamt about her tying you to a tree. It was a bad dream.' She scowled. 'That girl is possessed. She can't continue in this house. I'll not allow one girl from no-where to destroy all we've labored to build. Over my dead body.'

Nonso gazed at his wife in surprise. 'Wait a minute. So because of an ordinary dream, you want to send the poor girl away? Because of a dream, you are convinced she was a devil?'

'Eh, papa Chucks, this is not an ordinary dream. It is not ordinary at all. She must leave this house.'

Now, she no longer addressed him as dear. It was now papa Chucks. Nonso could read the signs.

He decided to hedge her. 'See how inconsistent you are. The other time, you said the girl was looking too good to be a house help; that she was dressing fine, and all that. Now, you're calling her a witch.'

'Papa Chucks, you've started again, abi? You've started to defend that girl! Why're you always defending her? Why?'

Her voice had gone up. She hardly got angry but he knew that any time she was, the effect was always terrible.

'Now, lower your voice. This does not call for shouting.' He reproached her with his eyes.

But Rose would not be cowed. 'I've not shouted yet o. I've not. Because by the time I shout, the whole neighbors will know. Why are you always defending that girl? Why? Has she bewitched you?'

'Forget your witch theory.' He smiled sardonically. 'Nobody's bewitching me.'

'Fine, so stop defending her. Stop defending that girl. Has she come to this house to work, or has she come to make fashion? She will be changing clothes all the time. Where is she getting the money? She can't come here and scatter this family. If she's looking for a husband, let her go back to her village. It's not in this house she will find a husband. Witch!'

Rose could hardly bottle her feelings again.

'Rhoda!' The call was urgent. The girl had been in the kitchen and had heard most of what they were saying. She stepped inside the sitting room calmly.

'Yes, madam.'

Madam Rose stood up. 'Don't madam me. Your work in this house is over. Start packing your load this evening. Tomorrow morning, you're carrying your load and you are leaving this house. Go back to where you came from. No husband for you here. Go to your place to look for a man. You can't bewitch anyone here.'

Now, Nonso knew his wife was very angry. It was obvious that this was one of the rare moments. At a moment like this, he very much knew it was better he kept quiet.

Rose continued to talk about how she would not allow anyone to destroy her family; that what she had labored to build over the decades would not be allowed to be destroyed just like that. She continued to say all these even as she left for upstairs. The agitation was emotive.

Nonso knew at this point that there was nothing he could do to stop her. He knew that his wife would have her way in sending the girl out of the house. What would happen thereafter? His mind was busy. He thought for some time. Then, he decided on a plan. Silently and quickly, he went to Rhoda's room.

'When you leave this house tomorrow morning, come and meet me at my office at Isolo.' His whisper conveyed utmost exigency. The girl said nothing but nodded.

'Don't worry about anything, okay?' He smiled as he reassured her. He then kissed and hugged her briefly. Stealthily, he left the way he had come.

Three students had been selected to represent the school in an inter-school debate. It had the topic: The Use of Nuclear Energy Has More Usefulness than Its Dangers. Their school would be opposing the motion. Apart from the three speakers, about ten other students had been chosen to accompany them.

It was also expected that the English teacher for the senior class would go with them. They would leave for the event venue by eight thirty in the morning, since the event would be starting at Kuto, Abeokuta by ten that morning.

Raphael had prepared the students well for the event and they were ready to argue out their points. It was after Raphael had settled himself in the front seat close to the driver that he realized Janet too would be following them in the eighteen-seater air-conditioned school bus.

Janet sat in the next row with some of the students. The trip to the place began in earnest. Apart from the customary exchange of greetings, Raphael wasn't able to chat with her, though he would have loved to. However, he had noticed some changes in her. He noticed that she rarely used makeup again. The attachment of hair had also stopped. Even her dressing was cool and modest these days.

They got to the venue on time. In the event hall, she sat next to him on the right. The fact that they were now seating next to each other availed the opportunity to chat briefly before the programme commenced. She was even the other that started the conversation.

'I hope your students are well prepared for this challenge.' She turned to face him. 'I hope they'll floor all the other contestants.'

Raphael smiled and nodded. 'I'm sure they'll excel. They have gone through their lines several times and they're ready.'

'Sorry, what's the topic about, again?' There was something apologetic in her smile.

'It's about nuclear energy and its proliferation.' He smiled too. 'The bone of contention is if it has more usefulness than the dangers it portends.
We're arguing that it has more dangers.'

Janet nodded knowingly. 'Yes, I'm sure they have a great lot to say on the inherent dangers.'

'They indeed have a lot to say.' He was very certain about that.

They chatted a bit more but Raphael could not mention the one in his innermost mind. The other guests and invitees arrived and the debate
started. The guest of honor was the Ogun state commissioner of Education who was unavoidably absent but had sent a representative.

Apez College scaled through the hurdles to get to the last round. The speakers were eloquent and were able to draw a lot of applause from the
audience. At the end of the exercise, the school came first. To Raphael's surprise, Janet hugged him.

The presentation of prizes was done. Raphael too received a token prize for training the winning team. His students were happy at their
performance and Janet shook hands with each of them. During the drive back to school, Janet did another surprising thing by coming to sit by his
side in the bus.

They were able to chat more, but even at that, there was a limit to what he could say. It was two days later that Raphael finally decided to
bare his mind. He called her some minutes to the long break period that he would like to come and see her during break in her office. She said no
problem.

As soon as it was break time, he let the staff room for her office which was not far away. Along the way, he asked himself if he was doing the right thing. The major impediment had always been the gap in social status. While Raphael came from a struggling background, Janet was obviously from an affluent home.

It was not an easy thing his decision to walk up to her, and even now, he had some reservations. What if she laughed at him? What if she was so miffed with him that she reported the matter as sexual harassment?

Oh, come on, Raphael, expressing love to someone (an adult for that matter) did not constitute sexual harassment, he chided himself.

Her office door was wide open.

'Good morning, sister.' He remained on his feet.

'Good morning, Mr. Raphael Johnson. Hope all is well.'

Raphael felt his task was even going to be more difficult. Janet had always been addressing him by his first name. Why was it that the very
day he wanted to discuss something very personal with her was when she chose to call him Mister?

'Please sit down,' she offered.

'Thank you.' He sat opposite her.

They were sitting face to face but Raphael avoided eye contact.

'I'm sorry.' He tried to be modest. 'I promise I won't take much of your time.'

'It's alright.'

'Ehm.' He cleared his throat. 'This thing I want to tell you is actually a revelation I got some weeks back. I should have told you before now,
but... Well, it's not too late.'

Janet raised her eye brows. 'What revelation is that?'

Before he could answer, Mrs Kweku came into the office. 'I'm on my way to the bank for that matter I told you. I'll soon be back.'

'Yes, ma'am.' Janet smiled and nodded at the woman.

Kweku left them alone.

Raphael resumed his narrative. 'As I was saying. I got the revelation after a week of fasting and prayers. I've been praying to God for a future
partner. I could have easily taken any lady, but I wanted God to be my guide.'

He only looked at her intermittently. 'I committed that very important matter into his hands. On the seventh day, I got this revelation that
you're the one.' For the first time, he looked straight into her eyes for more than three seconds.

'That I'm what?' She too stared briefly, followed by rapid blinks.

'That you are the wife I've been praying for.' There was something like eureka in the way he looked.

Janet smiled briefly and looked away. There was a long pause. Raphael was very uncomfortable during that long pause. What was she thinking about? If only he could read her mind. A security lady was passing through the corridor. As Janet called her attention, his heart leapt. But,
surely Janet would not ask the security lady to march him out of her office, would she?
