CHAPTER 19

With Ogugua strapped on her back, and Ifeoluwa balancing a torn ‘Ghana must go’ bag on her head, they made their way towards the Potatoes Market Street. They have walked quite a distance and her legs were getting sore.

She looked at Ifeoluwa who was expressionless, it was difficult to ascertain whether the girl was tired as well, she Knew Ife must be tired and hungry, but nothing on the girl’s face showed what she was feeling at the moment.

Ogugua was already sleeping soundly with a periodic rumbling of his stomach, and little cries which were subdued by the troubled sleep.

“The street is empty” she said to Ifeoluwa

“Hmm…” the girl agreed

It was past six in the evening and the sun was already going home for the day, so were individuals who have been forced to go home with the sun and sleep like roosters by the government;

“There is curfew from six pm, will you people make it pass the major streets before then?” Mariam had asked her

The first time she heard about Curfew was in 1998 When ‘Bakassi boys’ of Aba carried out Jungle Justice on Armed robbers in the state,

Uncle Theo, her father’s younger brother had came back from Aba and was hurrying to go back the next morning before the Curfew would start. The word had sounded like ‘Coffee’ to her, even to her Grandmother;

Kedu nke bu Coffe? Ana emere unu Coffee na Aba? (Which one is coffee? Do people share free coffee in Aba?” Nne, as she called her

Grandmother, had asked in confusion, drawing the questions from her own mouth. Thank goodness she wasn’t the one that asked the question, she wouldn’t have fared well with the laughter which Uncle Theo rolled out before explaining; Like the day she was laughed at in secondary school for not knowing what Oral s*x is,

Ogbonne, the wild girl in her class, known for her many tales of sexual escapades with senior boys in school, was talking about Oral s*x to her friends,

Jiri nwayo Ogbonne, ndi senior ga anu ihe ina ekwu (Bring your voice down Ogbonne, senior students may hear you)” Ola had admonished, getting Ogbonne to roll her eyes like ‘who cares’

“Why will she keep quiet, MouthAction is not a sin, when we talk about sex education as girls, that is Oral s*x” Ukwuoma had said with confidence,

The girls were silence and had looked at her as if she wasn’t from this planet, before they all busted out laughing at her ignorance,

“Pastor daughter, how she go know oral s*x? Na only preaching she dey watch” the big girl ‘Otusi’ had said.

That show of shame had earned her the name ‘Oral s*x’ from that day till she graduated from that school. She later learnt what Oral s*x was though, it wasn’t sweet the day Brother Emma from Teenage church took her to the church toilet and pulled her pant down.

They met some military men seated by their hilux truck drinking ‘Burantashi’ and spanking the buttocks of the young girl who was selling the mixture. The Men took little notice of her and Ifeoluwa, they were taking turns in squeezing the rounded buttocks which was hiding inside a long Hijab, while the girl laughed sheepishly.

Darkness has closed up on them by the time she located what used to be her house, she stood by and gazed at it, not knowing if coming back was a good Idea.

A little boy ran towards them, his pant which was big enough for three more children of his size, was held up with a twine, he stopped in front of the strangers, looked hard at them, and widened his eyes before he ran off towards the same way he came screaming;

Uwa…Uwa…!! Matar Doctor ta dawo!(Mother!, Doctor’s Wife is back!)” the boy screamed and ran

Waayoo Allah!!” two women came running towards them,

She hadn’t prepared herself for this, as she set her eyes on ‘Uwa Musa’ Again, tears clouded her eyes and by the time the women held her in an embrace, her guards took flee and she was as vulnerable as the day she left, she stood like a dejected tree, crying freely while Ifeoluwa watched the scene.

She breathed through her mouth, desperate to avoid the dank smell of dust, decay and dry blood, the subtle dead whisper and the hostile air that welcomed her made her shiver as if there where ghouls in the house,

She looked around the sitting room, it looked like there was a feast for beasts where skulls were used as drinking cups. Dry dead maggots with their eggs designed the floor like colored ceramics,

“What happened here…Jesus Christ!” Ifeoluwa exclaimed

She pulled her eyes away from the scene and looked at Ukwuoma, without asking, she knew the story. Uwa Musa took Ukwuoma out of the house into her own house, the boy Ogugua was fed and lay down to sleep while the two women and Ife cleaned the house.

That night, she sat on the well cleaned floor, with the skulls and bones spread before her, she gave them names and ran her fingers on the smooth milk colored exhibits.

She had asked Uwa Musa to leave them for her;

“I want to bury them when I can” she had said

And so they were gathered in a sack and brought to her; like a witch doctor performing incantations, she sat with her legs spread wide, she called them by their names, though she couldn’t tell which one belong to whom, she bathed them with her tears.

Ifeoluwa watched her in silence.

*

Ina suke? Where are they, Ina ki kpoye su? Where are you hiding them?”

Yusuf had chosen that day to carry out the plan, he was going to get the boy and then take him to a secret place where he would train him until the appointed time.

He had a feeling that his uncle had set some persons to monitor him, he has known his uncle to be a very tricky man, and who he was always steps ahead of those he has suspicion of.

Yusuf had left his house in the night, and had looked at his rare mirror to make sure he wasn’t followed.

It was easy for him to enter through the back gate and locating the Woman’s house wasn’t difficult. He didn’t know it would take so long as it was taking him at the moment, still the woman insisted she didn’t know where the boy and his mother were,

Wallahi! I swear to Allah, they are gone, they left here today” the woman responded

On her knees and with a dagger pointed at her, Mariam trembled with fear, she held her palms together as if she was praying and was muttering some Islamic prayers.

Yusuf was already running against time, he had to leave the place as soon as possible before anyone noticed his absence. He looked at the woman again;

“I will surely come for you, and that time you must be ready to give me the information I want” with that he hid the dagger and walked out of the house, into the darkness.

*

Issah watched him scrutinize the area before he hurried out of the place and disappeared into the darkness. He had followed the Commander to this place, had parked very far away from Yusuf’s car and watched him slide through the small gate,

Not only because Imam had ordered him to monitor the commander, but he felt the commander would lead him to what he has been looking for.

“Commander Yusuf has been to the Barracks three times this week” Ishmila had said casually as both shared few sticks of cigarette.

“I made it possible for him to enter…he is always monitoring this woman and her sister, and there is a small boy too…” Ishmila had continue

“Why?” Issah had asked

“I don’t know…A waste of time I must say…”

Issah had gave the information to the Imam for two reasons, he wanted to be in the good book of the religious Leader and he had never liked Yusuf, the rich Bastard who always flaunt his privileged self and his relationship with the Imam at them.

Issah pushed the door opened and startled the woman;

“So he kept you Alive eh”

Mariam couldn’t recognize him at first, but when she did, fresh terror enveloped her, the young officer used to be under her husband’s command, he had never liked her husband and even went ahead to threaten the senior officer, though he was punished for it.

“What did he want? Oh don’t bother…I know what he wants, so where are they?”

“I am not a patient Man and you know…I have always loathed you and your husband for how you carry yourselves, and here you are, without him, at my mercy, its Allah not wise?” Issah laughed

By the time he left the house, the dying scream of the woman trailed him, the location of his prey stuck in his brain, and a satisfying smirk on his lips

Episode 20

“We have to work out how to get the people to fall out with this government and win their trust”

They were in one of the executive rooms in the popular Sheraton Hotel, Abuja. The place has been their regular meeting point and they have always chosen to hold their meetings when other citizens were retiring for the day;

Seated round a table like traditional ancestral spirits, the five men hatched their plans

“the people has already falling out with this government, thanks to this Jos Crisis…what our Party needs to do now is to call a press conference and give fancy speeches concerning the insecurity, Mr chairman or vice can do that, you know… tell the people what they want to hear and make few promises here and there, we can warm ourselves into the heart of the masses with little benevolence” Alaji Danjuma rested his back on the chair and chewed his Bitter Kola noisily.

“We still have to keep the country on her toes, let us keep shaking the federal government, we have to come up with another strategy to keep the country in fear, and make the masses believe that this government is not doing enough to keep them safe” Honorable Wali said

“That won’t be a problem, these boys are always ready to dance to our tune as long as we are ready to lavish them with enough cash” commented Alaji

“You mean Imam’s boys?” asked Senator Usman

“Yes, as far as I am concerned they are on our side” Honorable said

“He is beginning to place demands” Usman said, removing his agbada, he picked the remote and increased the air conditioner

“Whatever his demands are, the truth is that we need him, if we must get people to vote for our party come 2003, we must show them the incompetence of this present Government, and we have to start with insecurity which nobody can hold this country hostage except Imam Husayn…” Mr Chairman cut in

“Personally, I am beginning to dislike him, he strikes me as someone who is playing all of us…” Usman insisted

He has been the one in contact with Imam Husayn, the cleric always made him uncomfortable; sometimes he feared he may be on surveillance by the Cleric’s foot solders

“We can always handle him when the time comes, let us use him now, at least he cannot be suspected by anyone…Senator…you will go and meet him again, tell him the outcome of this meeting…you will grease his palm with some cash” Mr chairman smiled and continue

“Barrister Walter… you will have some bags containing the money needed for this delivered to you this night, then you can drive to Usman’s house tomorrow morning with it, I don’t want any of my boys seen with the Senator, it may raise suspicion”

“My Chair…Ba wahala” Walter, the minister of Agriculture laughed and nodded in agreement

Mr Chairman picked the telecom in the room, and dialed a number

“Where are the souvenirs? Tell them to start coming up”

The men rose in excitement, adjusted their trousers and walked back into their separate hotel rooms waiting in anticipation.

Senator Usman lay naked on the massive bed in his Hotel room, he has always liked this place, away from his plain wife who cared about nothing else than prophesies and visiting of different Sheikhs.

Here he had the freedom to have as much fun as he had always desired curtsey of the Party chairman. He threw the Duvet off his body, climbed out of the bed and walked towards the fridge with his Kitchen sized belly dancing like an inflected hot balloon and his flat sagged buttocks swinging side to side.

He pulled out a bottle of red wine poured some of its content in a glass cup and gulped it down at once, he refilled his glass and sank on the cushion.

Meeting the Imam wasn’t an assignment he liked carrying out, the Man had a way of making his uneasy, it always seemed as if the cleric looked through him into his dirty soul, but then, the Party was releasing enough fund for it and he had also found a way of stashing some of those monies for himself before handing the remaining to the cleric.

Jos has been calm for sometime after the Bomb explosion, except for killings of people in their homes once in a while and Usman Knew the
Cleric had a connection to the periodic butchering and maiming of people. The news of the death of a Late Army officer’s wife two days ago still made the news that morning,

“We are on top of the situation, my men has swing to action to fish out those responsible for this senseless killing” the Army Major General had said on the TV

Usman knew that would be the end of that story, nobody was ready to investigate anything, and the citizens would be distracted from the case like it never happened as soon as the media would give them some entertainment stories to talk about.

Aside few overzealous Journalists, who would want to pry deeper on this matter, Usman knew that his party would have little or nothing to answer for, even Amnesty International would be on the neck of the presidency.

He sipped from the glass this time, wiped his face and his gaze fell on the naked dark lady sleeping on the bed, her breasts rose and fell as she gave out soft breath, he traced her curved with his eyes and stopped on her large hips; the memory of last night’s crazy f**ck came rushing,
He handled the girl like the slot she was, as old as he was, he still got the strength of a stallion and almost all the girls he had slept with could attest to that, this one was equal to his strength though, she had rode on top of him like a rodeo queen, slapping his face and his head while calling him baby,

When he couldn’t take it anymore, he had turned her over, with her arch facing him, and both holes screaming pleasure, he plugged his hard c**ck inside her, he had feel his shaft touching her womb when he thrust, his balls slapping her Clitoris and her Ass jiggling as it bouncing on his stomach, she had called him Daddy at that point;

“Yes Daddy, give it to me daddy…choke me with it daddy…” she has sang like a canary

The thought of it now made him hard; he gulped down his drink, walked back to the bed with his C**ck as heavy as a burden between his thighs,

“Imam Husayn can wait for now, this is life…” he thought

*
“There is no negotiation Mr Senator, its either you push this bill for us or you are on your own on this”

Usman has been with the Imam closed to forty-five minutes, yet the Imam would not agree to any negotiation, it was either the Sharia Law was pushed to the house as the supreme law for the nineteen northern states or nothing,

“Kai! This is going to be difficult, the constitution declared Nigeria as a secular state, it will not be easy to convince other House members to agree to this…” Usman tried to convince the cleric again

“Senator… no Law should supersede the holy law of Allah and you know that, you and your party are here to ask something of me, and I am asking you to help me do Allah’s command…”

“What happens if we can’t get two third of the members to sign the bill?”

“You have always known how to get what you want, get your dirty money to work for you…”

Usman heaves a sigh, it was going to be a difficult task, but if they could dull out enough cash to get key members by their side, it could be done…

“Tor…I will see what I can do…”

“One more thing…” Husayn picked the day’s paper and placed it before the Senator. The front page had a picture of ladies on Bikinis, crossing their legs and giving out plastic smiles,

“They are planning to bring that abomination to this country…” the Imam showed his distaste and glade his teeth like a dog

“When have we started hosting beauty pageants? It is bad enough that our girls, who are supposed to be married off, are being paraded like fresh meats publicly, now they are bringing the show down here? And they chose the month of Ramadan to carry out this abomination?...tell your house members that we will rather die than allow this to happen”

Usman was taken aback with his threat, he needed to get out of there as fast as possible, he picked the papers haphazardly, and shoved it inside his bag…

“Ehm…the money sir…should I leave it with you?”

“Yes…but bear it in mind that I will not give orders to my boys until I am sure my demands are being deliberated in the house of Assembly”

As the bulky man hurried off, dragging his flowing Agbada with him, the Imam picked his phone and dialed the Major;

“We may be sending a message to Mr President in Abuja, Get your men off the street for us…”

*

Mallam Kabiru was half way to his house when he saw the smokes going up the sky. As he got closer he saw the people in groups folded arms and shrouded shoulders, with faces looking at him with pity; his house has been burnt down

“We heard the explosion, by the time we were able to get the security, the whole place was already on fire” one of his students said

“Where are the other students?” he asked soberly

“Haruna and Ibrahim has been taking to the hospital…Muhamadu…Muhamadu…” the student broke down in tears

“Allah! Allah!!” Mallam Kabiru sobbed.

His eyes quickly went towards his library, he ran toward it, the smoke was thick and the walls were hot, but he felt nothing while he pushed himself through the rubbles, his student ran after him while the sympathizers screamed

He tried packing his books but most of them had lost their firmness and has been squeezed by the heat and smoke, his skin was being bruised and getting burnt but he surged ahead, shoving his servant’s hands off him.

By the time he was rescued, only one tiny book was salvaged and he clutched it tight on his chest “The Essential Rumi”

EPISODE 20

She stood in front of the headmistress’ office tapping her right palm with the folded dusty credentials which has changed from its original color to dirty brown and smelt of rat pee.

She was lucky to found some of them holding up though poorly, others has giving way and had become food for rats and soldier Ants that made her house their abode when she came back two weeks ago.

For that past two weeks, she had leaved out of Uwa Musa’s charity, until the day Ifeoluwa came in with an empty plate and a gloomy face

In na ci gaba dab a su yaran da iyali abunci, su iyali na ma za su ji yunwa (if I keep feeding her and those fatherless children she picked from the street, my family will starve too)” Baba Musa had said in Hausa but Ifeoluwa understood him

“Please my daughter, we just finished eating, there is nothing remaining to give her…tell her I will come and see her tomorrow morning” Uwa Musa had told Ife, sending the child back with an empty plate

“They were still eating when I got there, Musa’s mouth was oily when he came out” Ife had grumbled

In that sad situation, she managed a smile as she remembered Father Charles from Immaculate Heart Parish, Umudim Nnewi, who was said to have hidden his plate of Akpu and Onugbu soup when Nwamgbeke came to beg for food from him as usual, the story went that the poor Reverend Father had hidden the food inside the house and rushed out to meet the old woman and have forgotten to wash his smeared palm;

Biko mama, enwenyi ihe din a ulo fada kita m ga enye gi maka umuaka, erechala Jin a Okuko ejiri bia onyinye ubochi uka (I am so sorry Ma, but I have nothing in my house now to help your children with, the church council has sold all the Cocks and yams brought for thanks given last Sunday, they want to use the money to further the work going on in the parish…)” the priest had said

You won’t blame Reverend Father, Nwamgbeke was always a pain in the neck of anyone she chose to disturb with her family problems and lack, coupled with the poor Father barely had enough to feed himself after two third of the collections must have gone to the Diocese

Fada, Otito diri Jeso…(Father Glory be to Jesus)” Nwamgbeke had chanted

Na ndu ebebe amem (Now and forever amen)” Father had responded

Fada doo, Oburu ni Utara I na eluo, bunye nu mu na umu, ka ime be zia nu Opipia maka mgbahara njo ndi uwa (Please father, even if it is this Fufu and soup you are eating, give me and my children, at least you can do fasting for the sins of the world)” Nwamgbeke had pleaded to the Priest.

The story went round the Village, even the children nicknamed the Reverend Father; ‘Father Ori-Akpu na Ofe Onugbu (Father fufu and bitterleaf soup eater)’ she didn’t know how true that story was, Nwamgbeke had told the story herself, and it always made her laugh when ever she set her eyes on the Reverend Father

She didn’t blame Baba Musa and his family, things were hard, and three square meal was so difficult to come by not to talk of giving out to extra three mouths,

That night, she folded her arms across her breast as Ogugua and Ife gulped multiple spoons of watery soaked Garri with salt, while she swallowed her spittle.

Ehe…Za ki iya a Shiga yanzu (you fit go in now)” the messenger said to her, looking at her with disgust from hair to toe.
She knew why the lanky messenger, whose cap looked like a bicycle seat would look at her with disgust, if she was the Headmistress, she would not also allow herself as she was to enter inside the office;
Her once fitted gray suit was now like an empty bag of beans and she looked like a corn crow wearing it. With her cheeks sunk in and her bones visible, the once elegant cloth hung loose on her and moved on its own.

Na gode, Thank you” she said and walked in

Barka da asuba (Good morning)” Ukwuoma greeted the funny looking woman seated behind the wooden desk

She didn’t respond to her greeting neither did she look at her, she was busy flipping through the pages of a fashion magazine

Sannu da aiki (How is work)” Ukwuoma added, desperately wishing that the woman would talk to her.

Without responding, the headmistress stretched her hand towards her, Ukwuoma guessed the woman wanted her Certificates and handed them over to her. The woman wiggled her nose as the stench from the papers slapped her nose, she put the documents aside;

“I am so sorry ma, but that is what was left of them after I came back from the IDP camp”

“watin you say you want sef?” the woman asked

It was not a surprise to Ukwuoma to hear the headmistress address her in Pigin, in fact, it was seen as normal for teachers around there to teach with Hausa language or Pigin.

“I want to teach Madam…”

The woman looked at her with mockery;

“For this place, everybody wan become teacher, if hungry catch them small, them go run enter teaching mtchewww…” Mrs Headmistress muttered

“Oya watin you fit teach for here?”

“I can teach English and mathematics very well, though I major in Mathematics”

“Ehen…” the headmistress said, looking at Ukwuoma again

Ukwuoma prayed she got the job, this would be the forth school she had been to since that day, the first school had disqualified her on the basis of religion, while the second schools needed a French teacher and all she knew in French was ‘Jomapel’ and ‘coman tapel tu’

“You don teach before?” The headmistress asked her

“Yes! Yes… In fact I have been teaching for the past six years”

“Ehen…Okay…but we no dey pay plenty money o…na three thousand I fit pay you o, you know say money no dey we even get luck sef come get small children way gree come school, for this side eh, na beg we they beg them make them come school”

“Ma… I have a son…I also want him to be registered here…”

waayoo! You dey fine job abi you dey fine school for your pikin?”

“Work ma…school for my Pikin…ehee…both ma”

The woman looked at her again;

“I go comot him school fees from your money o…”

She had no better option; three thousand naira can help them put food in their bellies no matter how little. It wasn’t the kind of work she would want to take on a normal circumstance but then, this is not a normal circumstance

Na gode” Ukwuoma said left the office.

*

A kiyaye abun Kyama! (No to Abomination)”

Kar a kazantar da Ramadan! (Don’t defile Ramadan)”

tsirara na Shaitan ne (unclothedness is of the devil)”

The women were covered in blacks from head to toe, except from the nets that provided a space for sight, every other part of them were covered, while the men among them were on black caftans and caps.

There were many of them blocking the entrance of the federal house of assembly, with the national media organizations panning their cameras to get better shots and pictures of the protesters

“we say no to bringing any Beauty pageant in Nigeria!”

“Yes!!!”

“It is disrespect to Allah and the Islam!”

“Yes!!!”

“We the Shiite Muslims Stand against it!”

“They want to defile the holy month of Ramadan and insult Allah and his Prophet, we say no to this blasphemy!!!”

The young Shiite spoke with vigor, perspirations dropping from his face and arms pit, damping his cloth, the sun was high and scourged without mercy,

While the men on Agbada and suits in the House fought with words and chairs;

“This is a circular state Honorable, your religion shouldn’t affect what the next person chose to do with his or her live”

“Religion has always played an important role in this Nation whether we like it or not, and Islam cannot keep quiet while some group of prostitute marketers defile the holy month!”

“People have the right to do whatever they want to do with their lives irrespective of your religion, if you don’t like it, switch off your TV period!”

“Senator Ibe! You are a cow for making that statement! Will you allow this rubbish during your religion Lent period?”

“You are the cow senator Ali, you are the cow! Lekwa nu Aturu Awusa a o, you want to rub your stupid religion on all of us…?

Fiam!!!’ Senator Ibe didn’t see that coming, but he staggered like a blind ma as the big bottle of Eva water hit the back of his head, forcing his jaw to kiss his chest

Chineke me! ndi a egbu o nu mo, onye luru m Ihe kena (My God, this people have killed me, who threw that thing on me)” Ibe screamed
Senator Walter pulled his shoe and threw it at Senator Ali

Anumpama! Nkita rachakwa gi anya dia (Idiot, may local dogs lick out your eye balls)

In less than minutes, objects and humans were flying and diving each other while the senate president squeezed himself out of the scene from the back door.

*

Imam Husayn stood up after he had watched the drama for a while, he needed that conflict in the House of Assembly in other to perfect his other plan.

The young man that spoke during the Protest fascinates him, the kind of strength, zeal and vigor he would want to recruit in his sect, now that he wanted to gradually dispose Yusuf but there was still time.

He needed Yusuf still, he had been the commander to the sect for a very long time, changing him without any concrete reason may affect the movement. He thought of Issah and shook his head, he liked Issah, but he was still being careful not to entrust so much on him, he saw the zeal and brutality on Issah and it fascinates him as well as scared him.

He dialed a number and waited impatiently

“Yes…it is time…on a highly populated market…Yes…Allah will reward you and your men greatly…Allahu akbar

He had to drive the message deeper to the Presidency, this was no longer a dance, it was a war which he most win.

Two days later, two bombs rocked the city of Abuja, one was in Garki International Market, and the other was left in the boot of a rickety car in a commercial motor park.

CHAPTER 21

“…These are trying times for our beloved country, but I am confident that we will come out of this stronger. We have survived civil war, economic depression and some other negative situations and we will survive this. Today we lost well meaning citizens to bomb explosions and this should tell us one thing, Some elements want to divide us, they want to put fear on us, they want to Jeopardize this Government…”

“Son of a bitch” The Opposition party chairman cursed under his breath as he watched Mr President render his speech few hours after the twin bomb blast. He gulped his fresh Orange juice and refilled his glass.

A well read classy sixty five years old man, he had always converted the presidential seat from the day he came back to Nigeria after twenty two years he spent in London. His father, the then Senate President had wanted him to Join Politics

“It is our family business son, that is how we secure our generational wealth”

And so he came back with no knowledge of how Nigerian Politics was. He was a practicing Doctor which affected his way of life still, a vegetarian and a sports man. His father guided him into politics; he had gone from being a local government chairman to being a state House representative for his constituency. But when he saw Danladi Umar, his onetime classmate who dropped out of secondary school because he wasn’t bright enough to understand the different between a verb and a noun, Danladi was already in the federal House of Assembly by the time he came back. He had vowed to do all he could to get on top of the political game.

“…they have bridged our security system, they want to make you believe that you are not safe and that our security agencies are not working, I call those people ‘Enemies of the country’. And it is time to unite as one in other to fight terror and insecurity, you my citizens must help to fight our enemies; do not allow yourself to be used to perpetuate terror, report any suspicious activities…”

He had joined PPB, the ruling party, as advised by his former classmate and against his father’s wish, he gave them his all, but when it was time to bring out a Presidential candidate, Danladi was chosen over him, it was a blow but he stomached it well, and had threw his weight into making sure that Danladi won the 1999 presidential Election.

He had sat with Danladi on the day when INEC called out the results, he knew he did his job well, he had rolled out party money to those that needed to be bought. They had hugged like brothers when Danladi was declared winner. When Danladi moved into ‘Aso Rock’ he went with him and both had walked round the magnificent building with pride and uneasiness;

“You should be the one moving in here as president not me…you have all the brains and I…I have not even a school certificate” Danladi had said

“I must admit I was jealous when you were chosen over me…I still am jealous…a little” both had laughed

He had expected something huge from Danladi as compensation, but when it was time to appoint ministers, he was appointed Nigerian Ambassador to Chad, while Peter Thompson was made the federal Minister for Health.

“…our heart goes for the families that lost their loved ones in this wicked attacks, we mourn with you and we will do anything possible to bring the perpetrators to book, we will not spare them…”

He tapped the two girls sleeping on the bed, they wimped and rubbed their eyes;

“Get up, it’s time to go” he said roughly

“Why so fast, don’t you want to go another round with us again?” the red haired girl said while moving her naked butt, her breasts dangled like two medium sized water melons on a twine. He threw four wraps of Five hundred naira at them and the girls screamed with joy,

“Go f*ck yourselves” He dismissed them with a wave of hand

It started like an adventure, now it was an addiction. One was no longer enough for him, he love party and sometimes four girls on him, the best part for him would be watching these girls F*ck themselves. He still love his wife, but she was far away in London, doing what she loved most, Lecturing and visiting the children whenever she has the time. Only two of his closed allies knew this side of him, others thought him a saint.

His phone rang, he took it and saw the name on the screen, he waited for the girls to leave the hotel room before he spoke;

“Are you watching Mr President make his condolence speech?” the voice from the other side asked

“That Bastard, typical of him to throw dirt on our faces” He said

“We threw at him first remember? Hahahahaa” the caller made a joke out of it

Mr chairman sighed and spoke again;

“So what will be the next action?”

“I don’t know, I delivered my message to Imam Husayn, he is the one navigating this boat now, but his demands…”

“I know what his demands are…we will give him some, and play him on the others”

“I hope this turns out fine, he is a dangerous man, and if he smells any trick from us, he can crush all of us”

He may not be as old as most of these men in Nigerian politics, but he was wiser and a game planner, they knew it. That was why he was readily accepted and was made the party chairman when he defected to the opposition party. Danladi was threatened by his defection, but didn’t voice it out.

*

“Nice speech Mr President”

“I told them what they want to hear at this time, it is left for the media and our security Agencies to do their parts” Danladi stumped the corridor to his office, followed by his minister for media and publicity, who also wrote the speech that was read by the President.

“Put Ukachukwu through the phone, I need to speak to him at once!”

“Right away your Excellency”

*

“If I have to do your Job then why will I be signing out huge amount of money for security in this country?”

“Mr President sir…I don’t Understand?” Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ukachukwu said

“That I am paying you and your boys to do nothing while some undesirable elements set off explosives and killing people!”

“We are on it sir…”

“Look, I don’t care what happens in these small states and communities, but allowing this to get to the capital is the height of it? It will draw the eyes of international communities and that would be bad for us”

“We will fish out these elements sir, it will not happen again”

“Do whatever you have to do, get some people and make them responsible, parade some people and make the media carry the news, we must look good before the citizens and international communities”

“Copy sir!”

The Vice President walked in as the chief of staff was going out, the vice President gave him an acknowledging nod and walked into the office of the president, and closed the door behind him;

“I heard they want the 2002 beauty pageant that is to be hosted here cancelled” Danladi said without looking up, he had his hand on his temple, unconsciously massaging it.

“It is going to be a tough one, seeing the economic opportunities this is going to bring to us” Mr Vice president took the seat that faced the president

“Do you think it has anything to do with this bombing?”

“Probably…or what do you think?”

“I didn’t make you my vice for me to think what you should be thinking” Danladi growled

Danladi was tensed and confused and his vice knew it, so he forgave him for acting up, though it wasn’t the first time, but he knew his place, he was placed there by the party to pacify his political Region.

“The protesters said the pageant falls on the month for Ramadan fast…” The vice president added

“Then get in contact with the minister for Arts and tourism, let him see how he can work with the organizers to shift the date from November to December.

*

The young Officer sat on his new car watching the girl, he had earned the car as a Job well done from the Imam, if things would continues getting better between him and the Imam, he would one day convince the old man to do away with Yusuf while he would take over the role of a commander.

He has been watching and marking his time for three weeks, by now, he already knew that the street is always lonely on Fridays, most of the women goes out in the mornings and the girl was always alone, he could tell for she was always coming out of the house and going in alone.

He watched her lift a basket from the ground, the shape of her little breast was almost visible, her Nipples stood like tiny grapes, she had no luxury of getting an under cloth yet. He licked his lips again and gave his balls a little squeeze.

He had wanted to watched her rapped till she bleed to death, or to put his dagger in her vagina and slice it to pieces, but each time he hid and watch her, it heightened his desires and gave him a memory to hold on to while he jacked of when he was alone.

It was getting dark and he knew he had to leave, he ran his sweating palm on his crotch that had bulged out and was threatening to jump out of his trouser.

He decided to give it some time and enjoy this pleasure, maybe he could even kidnap her and keep her to himself, The Imam would not object to that if he found out.

With one more glace, he turned the ignition and drove off.
