First 3 years are very hard for a new immigrant, the money you bring with you is gone fast because you still even don't know where and how to get cheap deals. To make money for living is very hard because nobody gives you a decent job without Canadian experience, many new immigrants struggle trying to stretch their money, many realize it's better to rent together with other people after they spent on renting alone, many eat just plain rice because money is not enough. Those who have a family to support them or at least to give them the place to stay, are very lucky. I think OP now very busy running around and trying to get a decent living.

Yes, food banks but not all can use them, there is no times to make lines for hours for to get the lunch, new immigrants are running against the clock to work or find work and to make ends meet, specially for rent and transportation, that's why it's very common to see immigrants living in groups and cooking one pot of rice. No time to go to wait for food, you need this time to work and you don't have a car, public transportation is taking your time and money too. But yes, Sundays go to church and get food, everyday is working for a jobless people who don't care to keep a job but have time to go and wait and spend time on welfare.

most who have left Nigeria are upper middle class / rich folks (I mean, you can't make it to Canada without being on this bracket) and have lived such "comfortable life" that you are saying


But for so so many of us to leave at the same time, it means something is fundamentally wrong with that failed state called Nigeria

What makes Nigeria seem "comfortable" to some is the same thing that makes Nigeria a failed state

1)the fact you can cut corners

2)the fact that the justice system is flawed

3) the fact that you can pay domestic staff a pittance and have people at your beck and call at an abysmal rate

How can you base your full argument on money, did you see where he said consider other factors. Because like he said it's not all about the money. Have you considered that someone with 500k in Nigeria may have an accident or get robbed and die on the roads because they're bad or because people passing by are too busy taking pictures instead of helping, or are too scared to do anything because the police will harass them, or no emergency services to call that can offer first aid help. Before you even start to consider the kind other factors, let me say this; Imagine you fall ill in a country where all the brilliant doctors are migrating daily to find better jobs, and you go to the hospital where those left behind will treat you for malaria, then few months down the road it is discovered they could have actually spotted and caught a terminal disease at an early stage and done something about it, I wonder how you'll feel when your house of representatives member is treating his headache abroad.

remember you pay rent, feed the family, pay school fees, send money to family members, pay hospital bills etc from that monthly stipend.

I immigrated twice and to 2 different countries. I lived in a country very similar to Nigeria and in my personal opinion, you stay in Nigeria if you make a very good money, very high profit business, could be risky but making not 500K naira a month, making much more and saving for your future and your kids future at least a couple of millions of dollars before you get old, during this active time sending your kids studying abroad or immigrating, helping them to establish over there and becoming old or when the business is not working well, coming to another country where your kids are, moving to USA or Canada.

If you are poor or a middle class with 500K naira salary, it's really more secure and stable life abroad in places like Canada and USA, try to move and earn not only the salary but also a decent pension. How much is the Nigerian pension for an old person after working on 500K? What kind of opportunities are there for your kids to get a job paying the same 500K? Are the water, power and wifi always working and good quality? Do you feel safe walking or driving in your country? If you believe the life in Nigeria is good for you, for your future and your kids future, then stay. In your own country you know all the moves and how it works and if you feel it is your place to live your life, stay and work hard. But don't run abroad just because all do, there is no paradise in this world.
