After dropping Maggie, Tony drove back to Ilupeju. He was happy to have Maggie back. He had begged her and had even gone on his knees, just to have her back. He intended to keep to his words of stopping extra relationship with any other lady. Indeed, he wanted to keep to his promise, but how to do that was the problem.
He got back to his residence at few minutes to ten and was surprised that Cynthia was already
waiting for him.

'What? What're you doing here?' he asked.

'Is that your new form of greeting?'

He shook his head. 'I even wanted to see you before. I'm sorry, Cynthia, but we have to suspend this relationship for now.'

She pursed her lips. 'And why is that?'

'It's not the best of relationship and I need to sort myself out.'

She briefly appeared in thoughts. 'I see. So, you just want to dump me like that?'

'No, it's not about dumping. Try to understand. I need to sort myself out.'

'What're you sorting out about yourself? And why must I be the one at the receiving end?'
They were still standing outside his flat. 'Let's go inside and talk it over,' he said, bringing out his
key and opening the door.

Silently, almost gravely, Cynthia entered with him. She went on to sit on a sofa, looking sober.
'You're dumping me for her, right? You're dumping me for the lady lawyer?'

'Stop using the word, "dump". Let's just say I'm trying to find my rhythm, and I need to severe this relationship so that I can think straight.'

She chuckled. 'Do you expect me to believe that?'

'Believe it or not, that's the fact.'

She was pensive. So, that was it, she thought bitterly. He was giving her the red card. They had met some months ago when she came to market the services of the commercial bank where she worked as a marketer to him. Tony was a young, successful pharmacist with two retail outlets.

Cynthia had succeeded in winning his opening an account with them, and in taking possession of part of his heart. Since then, they had been lovers, although discretely. Now, he was giving her the marching order.

'Have I done any wrong?' she asked. In his mind, Tony had been thinking of how best to be firm without hurting her, but would that be possible? Could a man tell a lady that it was all over without causing some aches?

'You did no wrong, Cynthia. It's just that, as I said, I need a break to clear my thinking. As soon as I sort myself out, we can still come together.'

She sighed and checked her watch. It was ten o 'clock already.

'I was thinking of sleeping over here and have brought the clothes I will wear tomorrow along. It's late now. Going back to Egbeda at this time is unsafe. Can I just sleep overnight here?'

'I was thinking of sleeping over here and have brought the clothes I will wear tomorrow along. It's late now. Going back to Egbeda at this time is unsafe. Can I just sleep overnight here?'

He did not want and did not like the idea, but she was quite right. Sending her away at that time of the night would make him look wicked. At the same time, he must be very careful. He did not want to go back on his words.

'Okay, but that means you will have to sleep in the sitting-room.'

She smiled wryly. 'It's alright.'

There was a brief silence. 'Have you eaten?' he asked. 'If not, you can help yourself. Go to the kitchen and find something you can cook.'

'I've eaten,' she replied. 'Thanks.'

'Alright.' He went to lock the main door. 'Let me get you a bedspread you can use to cover yourself.' He went to the bedroom to get a bed sheet and soon returned. 'Here, have this.'

'Thanks, Tony.' She took the sheet from him, managing a smile despite the awkwardness.

'Alright. Goodnight.'

'Goodnight,' she answered.

She watched him as he left the sitting-room for his bedroom. What a terrible experience she was having. She had hoped he would make love to her till he got exhausted. She had hoped he would kiss her and treat her so lovingly, as he had done on some occasions in the past. But, look at the whole irony. Rather that treating her like a lover, she was treated like a house maid, or like an outcast. This was unfair. She had never been treated so unladylike like this before.

She got up from her seat and slowly undressed herself. After she had stripped herself completely unclad, she stared at her body. She had no doubt that she had a pretty and sexy body. People had told her how loveable she was. Even Tony had commented like that. Why then was he treating her like this? Why would a man abandon a sexy lady in the sitting-room and opt to sleep alone? Why did he even pick the other lady above her? Was she better than her?

Cynthia stared at her nudity again. Every part of her body was fresh and shapely. Her breasts were full and firm. How could a right-thinking man reject all these? No, something must be wrong somewhere. Tony must be going cranky, or something.

She sighed again, picked up the bed spread and used it to wrap her body. Then, she lay on the long sofa. Her indignation against him was back.

She was indeed angry that she would be treated like this. Her mind was busy. Was this how she would remain alone in the sitting-room till day break? Would she spend the next eight hours or so, so lonely? She closed her eyes and imagined she was in his arms. No, he did not worth it.

She would rather imagine she was in another man's hand. Unconsciously, her left fingers rubbed on her genitals.
Then, she became conscious of it and stopped the act. She loathed the self-induced pleasure and had promised herself that she would stop the act. Time ticked on and she soon slept off. Two hours later, she woke up with a start. She had a nasty dream in which a woman was raving at her that she had made her lose what belonged to her. And what was it that belonged to her? Cynthia could not even remember. She dismissed the dream.

Then, her mind wandered to Tony. He must be sound asleep now. Did he not miss her? Did he not miss the gyrations she gave him anytime they were having intimacy? Oh, how she longed for him, despite the way he had treated her. She sat up on the sofa. An idea came to her mind and she stood up. She still had the bed spread wrapped around her. Gently, she tiptoed from the sitting-room to the door of his bedroom. Then softly, she turned the knob and tried to push in the door.

It did not bulge. Damn it, he must have locked it from inside.

So, Tony could be mean like this! Just the way she had come, she went back to the sitting-room, lay on the sofa and closed her eyes. But what would she have done if she had succeeded in gaining entry into his bedroom? Would she have grabbed him and thrown her laps wide open for him, or what? Or would she have pleaded with him to have her for sexual pleasure? Whichever one she had taken would have taken whatever dignity she still had away.

She sighed and closed her eyes again, and thankfully, she soon slept off. By five in the morning, she woke up. She had brought her tooth brush around, so she went to the bathroom to take her bath. Then she went to the spare room, which was used as laundry room, to iron her clothes.
She wore them and returned to the sitting-room. At that moment, Tony too came out of his bedroom.

'Morning, Cynthia,' he greeted.

'Morning, Tony,' she replied.

He went to the bathroom too. An idea suddenly came to her. She was not going to be the only loser. Someone else must also lose. Stealthily, she went to his bedroom. His phones were on the stool by the bedside. She picked the smart phone he often used. She scrolled through the stored numbers and stopped at 'Darling Margaret'. Yes, that was the number she targeted. She dialed the number. Margaret picked it after the third ring.

'Yes, hello, Veronica,' Cynthia said cheekily.

Quickly, she went on: 'Yes, just like I said, I slept in Tony's place. My phone has credit, that's why I'm using his. Don't worry, he has given me the money he promised and I'll see you later. Bye for now.' Before, Margaret could make any response, Cynthia cut the line. Then, she went on to switch off the phone. Her mission was accomplished. Smiling to herself, she left the bedroom the way she had come. About a couple of minutes later, Tony emerged from the bathroom with towel wrapped from his waist down.

'I'm set to go,' Cynthia informed him.

Somewhere from his heart, Tony felt sorry for her. He knew he had 'used and dumped' her and it was not fair.

'Let me find something for you,' he said. He went to his bedroom and soon emerged with a bundle of two hundred naira notes.

'Take this for your trouble,' he offered.

She smiled briefly, mumbled her thanks, collected the money, tucked it inside her handbag, and left his flat. Again, pity arose in him, but he shook it off. Sometimes, a man must take some hard decisions, even if they hurt some people.

Margaret was about to take her bath when Cythia's call came through. Certainly, she could not believe her ears. She stared at the number and was astonished. It was Tony's number alright. A lady that called herself Cynthia had used his number to call her. But it was obviously a wrong number. Wrong or not, the lady who called slept in Tony's house. Ehn, ehn. So, Tony would still go ahead and bring a lady to his flat! Margaret had no doubt it was the very lady she saw in his apartment about two days ago. So, despite the seeming penitence and sobriety, Tony would go back to his vomit. And so soon, too!

When he was pleading with her in her office, she could have sworn that he was indeed sorry and would not commit the misdemeanor again.

One would have thought he had turned a new leaf and would not transgress again. But see what had happened. It was God that exposed them, Maggie decided.

Yes, it was God that made the lady to mistakenly call Maggie's line when she intended to call Veronica, or whatever she called the name. So

Tony could do this! Tony, with all his airs of showing affection for her would still go ahead and throw decency and fidelity to the dogs!

Alright, that was the final straw that would break the camel's back. She would put an end to the relationship. A final end! She went to take her bath. Though the water was warm, it felt cold on her body.

The incident had dampened her spirit. And from now on, she decided, she would never trust a man again. If a supposed gentle man like Tony could turn out to be so treacherous like this, then who could one trust?

After her bath, she creamed her body and dressed up for work. Needless to say that she felt disappointed and depressed. Well, you would soon get over it, she told her. If he proved to be so unreliable, some other men would prove worthwhile. Two hours after she got to the office, Tony called her number. Her natural reaction would have been to ignore his call. However, she decided to pick. She would do so, in order to lambast him and to tell him never to call her line again.

'Yes?' she said angrily into phone.

'My baby, how're you? How was your night?' he asked.

'I supposed your night was marvelous with Cynthia, right? How was she? How many rounds did you go with her?'

'What!?' Tony was too shocked to say anything further.

'Listen, Tony. I don't want you in my life again. Don't you ever call my line again. You're free with your Cynthia, but don't you ever call me again.' With that, she cut the line. She meant it when she said she did not want him to ever call her again. She was simply through with him.

Tony was shocked by what he heard. Wait a minute, how did Margaret know that Cynthia was in his flat? How did she know she slept overnight?

Could it be that Cynthia informed her? If that was the case, how did Cynthia get her number? His mind was filled with many questions. He knew it would not be easy to convince Margaret, or anyone, that He allowed Cynthia to sleep for the night because it was late, and that nothing amorous happened between them. Damn!

He shouldn't have allowed Cynthia to sleep overnight. He should have insisted that she went back to her place. But, that would look wicked, wouldn't it? He tried to call Margaret's number again, to let her know that he had a big explanation to make. But he was unable to as she had switched off her phone. He would have to keep on trying. Or he would have to pay her a visit again.

It was the evening time he finally decided to see her. He drove to her residence at Ikeja and got there by seven p.m. He met her in the sitting-room, discussing with her flat mate. The fact was the ladies were discussing his matter. Before he came in, Margaret had told Lara that it was all over between her and Tony. Lara was trying to soften her stance, but she said she would not play the fool again.

'Good evening, ladies,' Tony greeted.

'Good evening, Tony. You're welcome.' It was Lara that answered him. Margaret stood up and moved towards her room.

'Maggie, I've come to see you,' he said. She didn't answer him. Rather, she went on to her room and locked herself inside.

'Maggie, I've come to see you,' he said. She didn't answer him. Rather, she went on to her room and locked herself inside.

Tony watched her receding back and sighed. He turned to her friend. 'Please, you will have to help me talk to him. But first, let me explain what really happened.'

'I'm listening,' Lara said.

He sighed again. 'Yesterday evening, I drove down to this place to drop Margaret. By the time I got back home, I met Cynthia, the other lady. I was surprised to see her as she didn't inform me that she would be coming. Right there and then, I told her that our relationship was over. She would have left immediately, but she pleaded that Egbeda where she stays is very far away.

‘I had to allow her to stay since it was already after ten in the night. Believe me, we didn't sleep together. She slept alone in the sitting-room until this morning when she left. I was very surprised when Maggie called me this morning and asked if I had a fun-filling time with Cynthia, and that I was unrepentant. Believe me, what I said now was the way it really happened. That's why I'm here to let Maggie know what actually happened.'

Lara grinned. 'She won't believe your story. Nobody will believe you. The mistake you made was to allow her to sleep over in your place.'

Tony nodded. 'Yes, I agree. I was only trying to be considerate, but see the way she had paid me back. How could she call Maggie and tell her that she slept in my house? She must have done that when I went to take my bath. See, Lara, I can swear that what I said was the truth. God is my witness. Cynthia was only mischievous for making that call.'
Lara nodded at him. 'It won't be easy to explain that to Margaret,' she said.

'I know, but please explain to her. Tell her I'm ready to swear by anything about what I said.'

Lara smiled wanly. 'I'll do my best, Tony.'

He smiled at her. 'Can I have your number? I may need to call you later about how far you've gone.'

Lara nodded and gave him her number. Tony stood up. 'Thank you very much for your time. I'll be going now.' He nodded and left the flat. As he drove home, he thought about Cynthia and the damage she had done. How could that lady pay him back like this? Instinctively, he decided to call her. He was not surprised that her line rang on and on and she did not pick it. He was thinking she would never pick it when she did.

'Cynthia, what you did is bad. How could you tell Maggie that you were in my house?'

'Who is Maggie?' she parried.

'The lady you called early this morning. The lady you called with my phone.'

'I don't know what you're saying,' she protested. 'I didn't use your phone to call any lady.'

'Really? Can you swear that you did no such thing?'

'Why would I do that? I didn't do what you said I did,' she insisted.

Tony did not really think she would own up, so he had to let the matter go. He sighed and cut the line.

Chapter Three

The following morning, Lara was having a short meeting with her Director when Tony called her line. She cut the call, put the phone on vibration and put it in her handbag. Some twenty minutes later, after the meeting, she was amazed that he had called her seven times. She knew he would be eager to know the reaction of Maggie to the plea he had asked her to make on his behalf, but he just had to be patient. Not long after she brought the phone out, he called again.

'I'm sorry I could not answer it all the while. I was having a meeting with my Director.'

'Sorry to be bothering you. I'm anxious to know the outcome of your discussion with her.'

'You have to exercise patience a bit. I've discussed with her, but so far, she's not impressed.'

'Oh, keep trying, okay? Thanks for your efforts.'

'Yes, I will try more, but be patient.'

'Thank you very much, Lara, for your concern. I will surely compensate you for this.'

'You're welcome.'

He thanked her more before he finally disconnected the line. Lara smiled to herself. Tony did not really realize that he had got himself in a big
mess. The truth was what she told him were all understatements. Maggie had declared unequivocally that she would not take him back. She said she would not be able to emotionally cope with a serial flirt like him. She further spurned all Tony said was why Cynthia was in his house.

But Lara had not heard the last of Tony. Early that evening, about six o'clock, he called her again.

'I want to ask you something,' he began.

'What's that?'

'You, do you really believe me?'

She burst into laughter. 'Come on, Tony. Does it really matter if I believe it or not?'

He laughed shortly too. 'All the same, I want to know if you believe my story.'

'Well, let's say to some extent, I believe you.'

'Oh, thank you very much. Thank you, my sister, for believing. God bless you.'

'But, it's not about whether I believe or not,' she quickly put in. ‘It's about Margaret. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to believe you.'

'That's why I'm imploring you to do your best. Help me to make her believe.'

'I'm doing my best.'

'Yes I know. Keep trying. In the next few minutes, I'll send some credit to this your line.'

'Oh, you don't need to bother,' she quickly put in.

'It's just a token,' he said. 'Thanks for your time.'

'You're welcome.'

True to his words, he sent five thousand naira credit to her line a couple of minutes later.

Three days later, the situation remained the same. Tony was still pleading, but Maggie remained adamant. He refused to pick his calls. When he visited her office, she snubbed him. Even the lengthy WhatsApp message he sent to her was not replied. Lara was the one he kept calling and pestering. The night of the third day, he came to visit the ladies' residence. He was surprised to meet only Lara at home.

'She hasn't come back,' Lara explained. 'She said something like coming a bit late.'

'Well, it's alright. At least, I met you in the house.' He dropped the shopping bag he was holding on the center table.

'Can you please give her this when she comes? Tell her it's just a token of my love for her.'

'No problem, I'll do just that.'

'Okay, I'll be on my way.'

'I'll deliver your message. Bye.'

As soon as Tony left, curiosity took over Lara. She went to the shopping bag and opened it. Three Indian wigs, two bottles of Oil of Olive, a
bottle of Elizabeth Arden perfume and six yards of Ghana-waxed ankara cloth were inside. Wow, she thought as she examined the item one by one. This Tony certainly knew how to take care of a woman! Lara wished she could have a man like that. Why couldn't Maggie just forgive this guy? Why couldn't she let bygone be bygone? Well, maybe with these materials he had brought, Maggie would soften her stance. Fifteen minutes later, Maggie came into the house. Hardly had she settled down when Lara thrust the shopping bag into her hand.

'You went for shopping?' Margaret asked.

'No. It was Tony that brought them for you. He was here not long ago.'

Maggie's countenance changed immediately.

'I don't want them!' she blurted out.

Lara shook her head. 'Don't you think you've punished him enough? Don't you think you should have a change of heart?'

It was Maggie's turn to shake her head, and she did it vehemently.

'I'm not changing my mind about him. I don't ever want him again.'
'Eh, this is serious,' Lara put in. 'Even despite all he has done? Despite all these gestures?'

Maggie chuckled. 'He can't bribe me with this. He can't regain my love with materials.'

Lara was silent for some seconds. So, what happens to these, now?' She pointed at the shopping bag.

Maggie took one scornful look at the bag. 'Return it to him.'

Lara giggled. 'But, you've not even looked at the items inside.'

Maggie shook her head. 'I don't have to.' With that, she stood up and went to her bedroom.

About ten o'clock that night, Tony called Lara again.

'Sorry to be disturbing you,' he began. 'How far?'

'It's still the same thing,' she replied. 'She didn't accept the gifts from me.'

'This is becoming very serious,' he muttered. 'Oh, why is Maggie behaving like this, now?'

'May be you'll just have to exercise more patience.'

He seemed to sigh across the line. 'Alright, keep them on her behalf,' he said.

'Okay.'

'Sorry for bothering you once again. Goodnight.'

'Good night.'

Lara worked hard to complete the task of writing the legal reports she was writing. She was about to complete when the Director of the department came to her office.

'Pele, Lara. How far have you gone?' the madam asked.

'Almost through, madam.'

'Good. The secretary could not come today. She called that she was down with malaria. That means, you'll have to be the one to type it on the computer.'

Lara was not excited about that. She was slow in typing and always wanted to avoid typing copious documents as much as possible.

Yinka got a positive response from Margaret. She told him she was now well-disposed to his proposition

‘But it’s like giving you a chance. It's only a trial, sort of,' she said.

He looked delighted. 'That's very good of you. Hey, this is the day I've been waiting for.' At thirty-nine, he was very much ripe for a life-long relationship.

'Listen,' he went on. 'I can assure you that you won't regret this. Now that you've said yes, you'll see the loving side of me.'

Five day later, from all intents and acts, Yinka kept to his words. But it was too early for Maggie to fully release her heart to him. After two weeks, he offered to take her to the cinema on Victoria Island to watch a movie premiere. It was Saturday and there was no excuse about work schedule. They had a fun-filling time at the cinema, huddling close to each other like true lovers.

After the movie, he took her to an eatery not far away from the galleria. While they took their meal, they chatted about different things - from law briefings to clients, and to personal issues. On their way back, before his car got to link that would take them to Adekunle, Yaba, he slowed down the car.

'Is the car having problem?' she asked.

'No.' He smiled. 'It's something else that is having problem.' He parked the car by the side of the road and turned to look at her. 'It's my heart that's having problem, and until I say this, I think the problem will remain.' He looked deep into her eyes. 'Margaret, will you marry me?'

She had suspected this when he mentioned his heart. Besides, she had asked herself before now if she would consent to marry him. The answer was in the affirmative.

She smiled as she looked at his anxious face.

'Yes,' she said. 'Yes, I'll marry you.'

He hugged her very loving and kissed her briefly. 'Oh, that's my baby. Our love has just begun.' He kicked the engine to life again and drove off. His house at Anthony village was there destination. There, he tried to define love in his own lofty way.

Tony could see clearly now that Maggie had left him for good. But would she still have a rethink and come back? That was very unlikely. In fact, from the feelers he got from Lara, she had started dating another guy. All so soon, she had clung unto another man! He was miffed that she did not believe him. He was also at cross with her that she didn't give him audience, even for once. He shrugged. It was okay. Since she had decided to go, let her go. He too must move on.

Life is like that. He sighed. His main challenge was not about Maggie or her leaving him. His mind challenge was the strange feelings he was having. Yes, strange because it was the kind of feelings many people would not approve of. But was there really any crime in it? Would he breaking any law concerning it? Indeed, would he be breaking any custom if he should go ahead and follow his heart? He sighed. A bigger part of his said he should go ahead.

That Saturday, Lara was home alone. She was happy that her friend had found a new love. And, all so soon after the exit of Tony. Get yourself a man too, her mind told her. But what man? Why don't you give that man in your Ministry a chance? She briefly thought over this and shook her head. No way. She would rather not! She sighed and did some laundry. She normally did this on Saturday. On Sunday, after the church service, she preferred to relax with the television or any other thing. When she was through with the laundry, she went back to the sitting-room to watch the movie channel. Few minutes into that, her phone rang.

She picked it to check the caller. Strangely, she wished it was Alex, calling her to inform that he had divorced his wife and he was back in her life. But sorry, the caller wasn't Alex.

'Hello, Lara. How's your weekend?' The caller asked. It was Tony.

Lara sighed. 'Well, we thank God,' she replied.

'Maggie hasn't accepted those items, right?' he asked. He knew she did not accept them, but that was his best way of starting the conversation.

'No. Unfortunately she did not.' There was a tinge of sadness in her voice, as if she felt sorry for him. 'When are you coming to pick them?'

'That's why I'm calling, now,' he replied. There was a slight pause. 'I'm not coming to pick them. Lara, I want you to have them.'

She held her breath. 'What!'

'Yes, Lara, take them. They're yours now.'

'No, you can't do that. They were meant for Maggie!'

'Yes, but she rejected them.'

She was silent for a while.

'I have no personal use for wigs or other ladies' items,' he went on. 'So, have them.'
